  • I’m not a huge fan of Abranet, the mesh-backed abrasive from Mirka, but I do see the appeal, so in this video I run the same dust-collection tests from last years orbital sander comparison, to see if the results are dramatically different. Enjoy!

    I follow you faithfully Peter as your 10min. videos give me more useful information than some of the long,long and I do mean long, ones do. Well done.
    I couldn't afford those incredibly expensive brand name tools which is why I find your comparisons most helpful.

    Great video as always Peter. It is good of you to take the time to do videos like this comparison since you still work for a living. I might have to give this type of abrasive another look myself as all of my sanders are a mix of brands/types with varying dust collection performance.

    I’m late to the discussion, this dropped over a year ago (#091) and several months ago (#157). Thank you Peter, for very thorough review & research. I really enjoyed watching the #091 three parts, was on edge of seat by the third episode.
    I own Bosch sanders, they are reliable, cost-effective, and get the job done. I love that I can use third party sandpaper with them. Have not yet tried Abranet paper, or drilling out the Bosch bottom plate, thanks for info about Festool pad saver strips.
    I also own Festool sanders, they are obviously premium tools. Whenever I am working inside or in a dust-critical situation, I always grab the Festool. When outside, esp with more than one person on the project, we get out the tools, and swap after a while if we can, so ea person gets time on the tools. As expected, opinions are divided. The effect of wood dust on our lungs is long-term. Bill Pentz’ research is food for thought, if not action.
    The “is the Festool really worth it?” debate will never subside, nor should it. The wonderful thing about the current tool market is our option to choose from many good choices. Imagine the dire straits if there were only one Tool Company. Of course, the best tool is the best one for you, which will vary from project to project, budget to budget, & clients’ expectations.
    Thanks again, you clearly put a lot of time into preparing these videos, they are very informative. I too always appreciate it when I can breathe easily. The dust collection on plastic sheets was an eye-opener. Cheers….

      Thanks Jim! Turns out there is a thinner pad saver called a "Pad Saver Strip". I bought a "pad saver" and an "Interface pad" and get the foam version both times, sods law. As I say in the vid, I don't think the foam pad affects the dust collection (which was the purpose of this vid after all) but it sure doesn't help the handling!

    Thanks for the vid, I looked to buy the Festool sander/vacuum combo and could not get a decent price. I was at my local Dulux trade counter and Mirka were doing a road show with their combo was at a considerable discount (hundreds of pounds below the green label version). It has been a real workhorse, the Abranet does not clog anywhere near like the standard paper version and I do buy them at a decent price. They last on average three times longer and I don’t throw them away. I’ve done large solid floor areas in my lads salon (Oak) - sand all sorts of furniture. Excellent dust collection was a must. I’m not suggesting it’s better than Festool, for the money it has proved an excellent buy and performer. Kindest regards Mike

      Mike S Mike what Mirka sander did you buy? And was it a Ceros or Deros?
      I too really like the Mirka sanders and Abranet sand paper/mesh. I have it in 40 grit up to 1200 grit and I get virtually no dust after sanding.

    I've enjoyed catching up on this older series. I'm reminded of when I was standing back some inexpertly applied plaster (my fault!) a few years ago using my green Bosch orbital sander. If I'd used a decent sander with a hoover attached, I wouldn't have needed to put a tarp over the furniture and made such a mess to clean up.

    I use arbranet with an LS-130, I don't use any interface pad and I haven't noticed the sander's pad wearing more quickly than usual. Festool also make thinner interface pads. I also find arbranet less likely to leave unwanted marks in finer grits.

    I bought a Bosch GEX 125-1 AE sander last year - its similar to the one you were using in your test but has a 125mm round pad. I find it a nice little sander, effective, handles well and good value. I've tried it with Abranet and found it does improve dust collection over conventional discs, as your test shows. Plus I think I get better performance due to less clogging. So, it works for me!

      QWERTY7773 Mirka has 2 type of intermediate pad that will extend life of the backing pad. 1 pad saver 2 interface pad. The pad saver is thinner.

    Peter, have you done any testing to determine performance differences between Abranet and non-mesh style sandpapers to demonstrate the effectiveness of Abranet? To my way of thinking, that aspect its sanding performance, which of course would be influenced by how well abrasives facilitate dust-free operations, is much more important.
    Additionally, I'd like to see such testing done with the panels in their most common orientation, and that is lying flat on the bench.
    Thoughts?

    Dear Peter, thanks for the video. I am making wooden pendants (very small), so I don't have a chance of using power sander. I use hand pads without dust collection. Abranet never clogs. It is faster (I know cause I hand sand) and lasts much longer than all other sandpapers. This is my experience.

    Abranet fanboy here I'm afraid. I've been using them for well over 10 years in the automotive industry and I'm sold on them. Yes, they cost more than other types of abrasive but since they almost always last longer than other paper backed products I've used, the initial cost is evened out in the longer run. And I understand your comments about the interface pad. They are made more for sanding over gentle curves, to stop you getting what we call the "50 pence piece" effect, where you can get ridges if you use a harder backing pad. They are not ideal for flat sanding.
    I see it has been mentioned already but the pad saver is really what you need in your application. Due to the net nature of Abranet, sanding dust and worn abrasive particles can find their way onto the velcro of your backing pad, causing it to wear and lose its "stickiness" prematurely. The pad saver was introduced to reduce this effect. The velcro on the relatively inexpensive pad saver wears out first, saving the more costly backing pad. They are so thin (basically double sided velcro) that they don't affect the handling of either orbital or random orbit sanders, or indeed hand sanding blocks.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Thanks Andy. I bought a pad saver and an interface pad, and they were both the foam type. Turns out you have to specify ‘pad saver strip’ to get the thin one

    Hi Peter, another great video thanks! Just out of interest, I notice you work with MDF quite a lot and I was just wondering if you use an M class dust extractor for this? I know the Festool CTL26 is meant to have the same filter as the CTM26 but without a few of the extras, so I was considering going down this route. However, just wanted an idea of what the pros use. Thanks again for all the great content!

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Hi Daniel, and thanks! I use regular CTL extractors; as far as I can tell the only difference between the L and M class Festools is the warning you get with the M class when the extractor bag is full enough to restrict the airflow. But of course, please do your own research before making a significant purchase! I seem to remember a detailed thread on Festool Owners Group forum about this exact issue - might be worth getting on over there and searching it out?? 👍👍

    The Mirka Deros plus Abranet, is a dream combo. Little dust, light, not too much vibration and effective. have tried the lot and I think it is worth every penny. Particularly for the really noticeble reduction in fatigue, which I think subconsciously is the real reason sanding is dreaded, even more than the dust. I bought mine, as an Axminster return. Really recommend.

      Thats a shame. Try the new rectangular one, it looks even lighter, and maybe the paddle won't bother you. The plug in versions are easier to use than air powered. The paddle is not so stiff/large.

    Had never heard of Abernet before, I have some Axminster mesh sanding strips meant for wood turners as they are cooler in use when final sanding a piece spinning quickly on the lathe. They also are quite a bit slower so I guess it depends if you want to save time or your fingertips 😄

  • @NickFajardo
    @NickFajardo 6 лет назад +11

    My impression was that the main advantage of Abranet wasn't the dust collection, but for the longevity of the sheets compared to traditional sheets.
    The normal sheets can "clog" easier, the dust getting stuck in the sheet and making it smoother. With the abrasive being the removable mesh, you can pop it off, blow it out, and continue using that same sheet. You're not constantly popping sheets off and tossing them in the bin. More eco-friendly or the like? Man, I sound like a marketing shill... ;D
    Now, whether the longevity and convenience factor offsets the cost is completely another matter, but I've seen woodturners that swear by the stuff :)

    Whats your experience of clogging? I bought some JCB branded mesh abrasive recently (because I saw it in the shop and thought I would give it a go) and in my limited use of it it does appear to clog less/be easier to unclog than normal sanding sheets.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  6 лет назад +1

      Have to confess, I've never had an issue with clogging when using Granat. I think the dust collection helps keep the abrasive cool, which reduces it significantly. 👍

    • @lewistaylor863
      @lewistaylor863 6 лет назад

      I have used the mesh based stuff on my mouse sander which doesn't have any dust collection (I know I should have realised when I purchased it!) and it appears to clog a lot less than normal abrasive. Plus when it does you can just peal it off and blow it out. I noticed that a commenter below has mentioned something similar.
      I guess the moral of the story is, only buy sanders with good dust collection designs and it makes life better all round! :)

      Hi Tony. I’ve heard from a few woodturners who are fans - the mesh backing makes for ‘cooler running’ I think?? WRT extraction I have an old Festool CTL 22 vacuum under the main bench and I run the hose up and over the bench to a boom arm that reaches the main areas pretty well - I talk about it in a bit more detail in my shop tour video. I have another smaller extractor attached to the mitre saw, that also does duty on the bandsaw. 👍👍

    I find mesh type sanding abrasives knock spots off of non mesh types when sanding on the lathe. They don't clog as often and both sides are usable. I do use both still. The lower grits from #60-#120 for general sanding and the higher grits #180 - #600 for finishing work

    Peter, do you prefer the rectangular orbital sander over the circular random orbital sander? I haven't seen you use a random orbital on the channel yet and am in the market for a new Festool sander and am torn between the two. Any suggestions for which would be best overall or a do it all type sander?

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  5 лет назад +1

      No, I use random orbital sanders a lot, but sometimes a plain orbital is better suited for the job, though often that’s as much due to size and weight, as the actual sanding pattern. A 150mm random orbital with a 5mm stroke (eg ETS 150/5) will cover an awful lot of situations, from relatively aggressive paint-stripping to fine finishing. A small orbital (eg RTS400) will cover pretty much all other situations, aside from detail sanding in tight spaces. One area I would be a bit cautious about is a smaller (125mm) RO because they typically have a smaller stroke (~2mm) so are really meant for fine finishing only. As always though, the piece you’re working on will dictate what you need to use; I’m okimg on some small side tables with the leg and shelf section are only 36mm square, and I’ve used a 150mm RO on the initial prep, and the RTS400 for fine finishing and paintwork prep. That all have a place, and a role to play. HTH P

    The one thing I have noticed in my garage is that the my extraction, a simple shop wet/dry vac, gives out a lot of dust.... this seems to be passing through the vac and back out into the work space. Next step for me is to introduce a cyclone into the system and some air filtration system. I will have a search for your Festool Shop Vac videos... I know that their equipment is expensive but if it works then the price is irrelevant!

    The biggest problem I found with Abranet was that it lost its grip on the pad much sooner - long before the grit wore down. So you are left with a bunch of (in my case) discs which are usable for hand sanding, but come flying off the orbital sander as soon as you switch on the machine. I tried to talk to an Abranet rep at W16 (NEC Trade show) but he was not interested. I got the feeling that it was a known problem to which they had no answer.

      Yes, I can confirm Peters reply. The Pad saver helps greatly in adding a normal amount of „sticking power“ to the Abranet, It also, as the name implies, keeps the original pads Velcro protected. In addition, it can be used as a minimalist interface pad on normal paper. I‘m not in any way trying to advertise, it‘s just that my personal experience with the pad saver has been really great and I see it as the most important addition to my tools since starting to use Abranet...

    Hi I recently bought the ETSC125 cordless sander and am wondering if anyone else has encountered an issue with the Velcro pad: I’m finding that the sanding discs (both Granat and Abranet) are not held well enough by the Velcro pad and so move and curl up at the edges- very disappointed with this. Any advice or comment gratefully received thanks.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      You shouldn’t be getting any curling at the edges with Festool abrasives on a Festool sander. The Abranet issue is widely known, and needs an interface pad to stick to the proprietary Festool hook & loop, but I’ve always found Granat to stick very well. Assuming I t’s the original Festool backing pad, I’d contact the dealer and return it for replacement as that isn’t right at all. Let me know how you get on. 👍👍

      @@10MinuteWorkshop Great thanks for that: I will contact the dealer. Is an interface pad the same as a protection pad?
      I read that it is heat which kills the hook and loop, possibly due to how I am having to use the sander atm without dust extraction (and with 80 grit).
      Also; sorry to go on!; am I at a disadvantage since a ‘hard’ pad is not available for this particular sander?

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Sorry, Mirka do two - an interface pad, and a pad saver. It's the pad saver that you want - the interface pad is a ~5mm thick foam disc that doesn't do anyone any favours, the pad saver is just a thin (~1mm) disc with hook & loop on each side. And yes, you really need to use dust extraction, as the airflow helps keep the pad cool. I've never used anything other than the (medium??) pads that come with the sanders, they're generally a good all-rounder. 👍 👍

      After watching Katz-Moses video on sandpaper, I bought 3M cubitron for about half the price of a pack of Abranet. Sanding 2 entire flights of stairs, one with paper, the other with nets, it feels like nets compared to even the highest quality paper disks do last at least 2-3 times as long.

    I have a Mirka pad saver for my Rotex125, to use abranet on that machine. It’s not got the stupid squishy bit on it. Just Velcro on both sides.... pretty sure they do them for the RTS too - disclaimer, I’m not a fan of a tamer either, brillant2 and granat all the way I’m both my Rolex and my RTS !

    Great review. The Fusstool is better but will cost you. The amount of holes in the pad seems to be the factor. I thought the Abranet would have made a bigger difference and helped the Bosch. Maybe try a piece of Mirka pad saver as a backer.
    Call me crazy but i just bought a Mirka Deros 5” palm sander for $600. Incredible sander. Completely dustless, variable speed, quiet and low vibration, soft start....Amazing. If you look at the Mirka pad it has about 40 holes that all interconnect to the suction. The reviews were so good i had to try it. Replaced an old Portercable 5” screamer. Went from one extreme to the other. My lungs wish these sanders existed 25 years ago. The cost is absurd. Cant understand how a palm sander costs as much as my Hitachi slide miter? Fusstool’s pricing is absurd also but they are pushing all the other tool makers to improve their products. Fusstool will have to adjust pricing eventually or loose market share.

    thats an interface pad on that sander rather than a pad saver, pad savers are mm thick. that interface pad is used to sand curved surfaces to help spread the pressure evenly which is maybe why on flat surfaces it tend walk all over the place due to lack of pressure being applied

    Why do you use a pad, is that a Festool thing?. I use the abronet mesh straight on the sander (Metabo duo) hook loop base. It works great and they last really well.. I would also point out that you did not really test the baroness. The variable was the sander used. I suppose showing last years results go someway towards that but it is hardly a good approach to ensure a valid comparison.

    I am a bit confused about this. Why would anyone care about how much dust is left behind? I assumed that abranet was better because it cut faster and lasted longer - these are the only two things i care about with sanding. Dust remains is the last thing i could care about.

    • @10MinuteWorkshop
      @10MinuteWorkshop  3 года назад

      Effective dust collection is one of the main selling points of mesh-backed abrasives. Showing what’s left behind is a simple visualisation of how effective - or not - the abrasive is in that regard. And you should start to car about dust collection - your lungs will thank you, and so will your clients. 👍

    • @VestigialHead
      @VestigialHead 3 года назад

      @@10MinuteWorkshop I simply wear masks when I do any operation that generates dust. I also cannot afford a dust extraction system like the one on the video. So it is a meaningless benefit. Does the Abranet product last longer? Or give a better finish? Or is it quicker? If none of those three then that is fine - but it means it is not a product that has any benefits to me.
      I get others might for some reason want a tiny bit less dust, just does not mean anything to me.

      Thanks! It's called a "Pad Saver Strip" apparently. I bought a "pad saver" and an "Interface pad" and got the foam version both times, sods law. As I say in the vid, I don't think the foam pad affects the dust collection (which was the purpose of this vid after all) but it sure doesn't help the handling! Hey, and those jokes don't write themselves 😂

    • @okafka5446
      @okafka5446 6 лет назад

      Exactly - the thickness/softness of the foam is to aid contour sanding, not useful for sanding flat surfaces. Try the standard pad saver, and perhaps gravitate towards Abranet Ace, which is supposed to be more durable. The pad savers are necessary, as otherwise the virtue of the abranet becomes a flaw, as the sanding base gets worn out too rapidly, making for a much more expensive replacement.
      Given extraction is one of the more important criteria, I'm wondering why no manufacturer has designed the fixed sanding pad with hundreds of smaller holes to maximise the virtue of the Abranet/mesh style of abrasive? Presumably some straight forward calculations could be made to design one which optimised the performance of the mesh? Or is this a new improved line of sanders, that's just round the corner? :-)

    You essentially turned a abranet video into a comparison between Bosch and festool which is pointless as festool is gonna be king on performance no matter what its compared too ,you needed to use either Bosch or festool and use standard sand paper and the mesh for comparison.
