The text isn’t being written in a silo. It’s being written to a particular audience addressing specific things that are happening in that time and space. I 💯 percent believe God still speaks to us in modern times through the text, but if you don’t know how to do proper exegesis you will end up with bad theology every 👏🏽 single 👏🏽 time 👏🏽. That’s how slave owners justified slavery via bad exegesis. any submission to a difficult situation is God reminding us that the battle is His! God can bring us through anything and everything if we would ultimately submit to Him which in turn means to listen when he say submit to x,y,z.God is good!

This helps my members focus on the concrete stuff of the verse. Then I provide about three contextual questions. Jackie did an awesome job of this by providing the context of common Hellenistic writing styles in the Pauline letters then asked about their significance. Finally providing two open-ended questions so that my members can really build on the stuff we discovered in the verse beforehand. I find this method really helps build on the context of the verse so people aren't just going under their feelings and prevents crickets from open-ended questions they felt were too difficult to answer. I think historical context is wonderful regarding slavery. I do believe the practical application of the workplace is a valid interpretation spiritually . With regards to applying it to our lives today. Just a little hit at Jackie😂
I always hear people say "slaves obey your masters", but the KJV says "servants obey your masters", which is largely what I think was being referred to.. if you are put in a position to serve, whether through leadership or subordination in any way at all, do so as unto God

I wonder if the term slave in the Bible has two meanings and is equal to a literal slave and also a literal worker. I feel like both are the same like if you work for Apple, you are a slave if you work for McDonalds you are a slave. Idk why but I get the vibes that when Jesus says slave he means workers too not only just literal slave. Because technically if you aren’t financially free and most of your check goes to bills and rent and you can never afford to travel or go on vacations you are a slave you aren’t free but being in Christ makes you free. ❤

I think part of the problem is that we are not reading the Bible with an understanding of historical context with an eye how it relates to us today.
