If Otis had not been a bluesman, he would have gained much greater recognition both as a pianist and a musician; an early death helped none either, but more than 50 years on he still continues to gain greater acclaim, and thanks to youtube, he will never die (unlike his baby!)
I looooove this clip! If I could only show someone 1 video to personify the blues, this is it. The raw talent, the ease, the 2 ashtrays and guitar on top of the piano... absolutely perfect.
Moe, buddy, I worked on this. It was made in Toronto, Canada at CBC, 1966. Not in the U.S. - We sold a license for re-release of these performances to Rhino Records, contained in their release ("The Blues Masters".) I sat-in for the producer and directed the re-mastering of both the video and audio: that same producer oversaw most of the problematic transfers from CBC's original 2" masters to a digital 1" in 1996, also at CBC. CBC still has some digital master of those original transfers and there is so, so much more than the 12-13 songs culled from an embarrassment of musical wealth still awaiting release. There were many folks involved, most with far more experience than myself, so I apologize for any naked "personal pronouns."
I’d love to hear the full audio from these sessions, but I don’t know of any releases of this other than the show/DVD that was put together showing some of the footage: Blues Masters
Fantastic singer and pianoist . Not as well known as a top blues singer probably because he was in muddy waters band and muddy was the front man. To me otis is one of my favourite blues artists. He will never be forgotten.
One of my new favorites I just discovered it I'm a big fan of St James Infirmary by Louis Armstrong and some of the old classics and this is right up there love it
i learned how to play from his and Memphis Slim's records.. the shot gun line always " killed me" this song was chord wise more sophisticated ..great that it's on the tube
Did any of you ladies or gentlemen have the privilege of seeing this performer? I'd love to hear your experience. This is a GOLDY and you can FEEL why.
Otis Spann joined Muddy’s band in 1952 and stayed until 1968, playing on his first recordings for Chess in 1953. They shared a close personal friendship as well as a great musical partnership. Water’s often referred to him as his brother and for a time the Spann family lived in Water’s basement apartment in Chicago. They remained very close until Spann’s death in 1970.
Oh man, I honestly feel like he’s a cold psychotic killer who really is going to kill. And if you do anything about it, he’ll kill you too. No other version of this song captures that kind of feeling. It’s exceptional
the greatest piano player that ever lived. God bless you Mr Otis Spann you are not forgotten

Agreed, along with honorable mention for Sunnyland Slim, Memphis Slim, and Pinetop Perkins.
Otis was a very good man. When I was a boy.He gave great encouragement to me and other young boys.We miss Otis..
I love these old blues songs. White shirt, jacket and tie, and cigarette burning on the piano. True, soulful music.
Yeah.
That’s the only way I’ll take the stage.
No one knows why.
Sounds like YOU do😉
And slicked down hair 💙
No

That's a disturbing line and a disturbing face when he says it.
Check out Lightnin Hopkins "Bring me my shotgun"
Obviously, this was a different time. I love that line not to kill my baby, but the way he sings it is amazing. The 2nd time is just magic.
Really is a stunning piece of music, Good luck beating the blues .
Do believe that's Muddy's red '59 Telecaster sitting up top the piano.
He's the best.
Adorable i love the blues and certainly the legends so beautifull.

Maravilloso blues genial gracias señor Otis.
Probably the most deliciously wicked laugh on the internet
Lol 🤭
I didn't know yamahas were this old!
Other worldly. He went far to early. Even though he was solo at the time of his passing, Muddy Waters was devastated.
Muddy was for sure. His little brother...

The music treads the line
Between deeply painful and deeply personal and beautifully.
The blues at it beat.x
Maravilloso 👏 👏 👏
Excellent
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they call this the blues...
How can 7 people dislike this!?!?!?!?!? Idiots!

Great version with Fleetwood Mac too.
Amo estas musicas não e da minha época mas gosto
Wow...
Merci "Moe Crosby" 🌺 pour cet ajout pianistique vocal admirable d'Otis Spann via le batteur (?) mis un peu à l'écart (dommage) 🙋🎼💜🎹🌺🎧🎼🎩🎩🎩
This ones for my lady Elizabè De Puga!
😎
Which came first, Otis Spann's 'I'm Leaving You' or Lloyd Price's 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy'?
This is a CBC video not CBS.
Let me tell you something... :)
