Excellent point. Certainly they should be very extensively vetted and stringently screened as would be done on any applicant for a highly sensitive/high profile job. For these positions, people’s emotional and interpersonal stability, financial history and legal history are gone over with a fine tooth comb. Extensive contacts with foreign nationals, utilization of the financial institutions of other countries, the quantity and nature of civil suits are routinely vetted for sensitive corporate, military, sub contracting , research and civilian government positions. None of these entities can afford a scandal or penetration by domestic or foreign corporate interests. It is essential that those campaigning for the Presidency be held to no less a standard. Our current laxity is absurd and made a “ Trump” possible in the first place. This issue needs our prompt legal reform as a priority.
The magnitude of the issue addressed in this trial cannot be overstated. How many politicians in the past were elected due to a successful catch and kill policy. These people blandly discuss it as though it is just one more election strategy versus the subversion of a viable, working democracy. There is a complete absence of shame evident in all of these people’s discourse; their gripe is that the deal worked out badly for them. Most concerning are those who frankly admit that they don’t care about the ethics of a political leader as long as he or she addresses their specific wants and needs. They don’t understand that the one produces the other. A crook interested in satisfying the wants of their constituents only does so until a better offer comes along.
Anybody with any common sense could see Trump was no good long before he ran for president.

Only certain politicians are prosecuted for things that can be made into crimes. While it is possible that under the letter of various laws Trump committed a crime, it took a prosecutor looking for a reason to charge Trump with something to come up with a new and creative way to make a crime out of his actions. Dershowitz is correct IMO, natural justice occurs when someone is seen to commit something which is clearly against the law and is charged, not when someone goes looking to construct a case.

Can we take a moment to thank the people who capture words in real time and create the written *transcripts* on which this whole news segment is based? They're called *court reporters,* the profession is dominated by women, and they are going without sleep to expedite the production of what news anchors are reading right now. As a profession, they are extremely poorly paid, and yet *no court room proceeding can occur without them.*
Thank you, Madame Court Reporter, for taking on this difficult task and providing the world with official transcripts of what happens in our legal system. I'm sorry your efforts go unthanked, and you are treated as if you're invisible.
Not so fast, there citizen. Transcripts in felony court cases have traditionally been subject to falsification. If either side objects, moves to strike from the record, giving grounds and that is sustained it is removed. A judge may unilaterally do it without citing cause and still admonish or order the jury to disregard. This is a long-standing, unquestioned wrong.
On March 12th, 1994 I discovered that the transcripts in my felony case from pre-trial to sentencing were falsified beyond recognition from the proceedings as they happened. Yes, I can prove it beyond reasonable doubt and the jury can verify those violations they were witnesses to.
While it's unlikely that it will be deemed necessary to forge a fake history in this case or any other Trump one don't think this practice isn't done.Your confidence in the integrity of courts rightfully ours is naive. This is in no way a defence of Mr. Trump who's lawless himself.

@@dennishickey7194 : You must be confused by TV shows. When the judge says "The jury will disregard", it's still in the record. It's *NOT removed* from the transcript. And all *objections,* whether sustained or overruled, remain part of the record, because they can be grounds for appeal.
I was a court reporter in Canada for 25 years, and that was always the practice. If it's any different where you are, you must live in the land that justice forgot. Of course, in the U.S., where even your "highest court" is blatantly corrupt, unqualified, and compromised, and are accountable to no one, anything is possible.

So far a conspiracy to assist the campaign is established backed up by other known evidence, that meant AMI & Pecker broke campaign funding law, for which he was granted federal immunity. It's Pecker realising they were committing crime that forced Cohen & Trump to change pay off arrangements with Cohen using home loan to secure the funds.
We also know Trump's CFO over paid Cohen (2x130+60 = 420K) with a breakdown that defies credibility in the "innocent mistake" category as Trump's track record is on stiffing legal bills.
A jury can reasonably conclude that was done to buy silence & loyalty from Cohen who's legal peril was increasing greatly, as a result of the hasty decisions.
Eli's take on the tape is odd, because I heard Trump asking probing questions and suggesting "cash" which caused Cohen's "no no no no" response. It was obvious when Trump heard "to finance" that he was all over it and he is the sole person authorised to write the DJT checks.
The defense that Donaldict didn't know fails because of criminal conspiracy where the boss & others determine a plan, then has others acting as cut outs. A co-conspirator undertaking a criminal act like fraudulent recording to commit a criminal act like conspiracy to illegally influence an election fits what we have seen so far perfectly.
There are legal issues, as Cohen was convicted under federal laws and this is a state prosecution, but the pivot from National Enquirer printing fake stories about opponents and killing Trump scandals was because they realised criminality and the scheme continued in house was directly against an NY state law too.
Trump's best defense against felonies rests on technicalities, he's shown no regard for the law, so tried for an implicit attorney was present but without taking stand and waiving attorney client privilege. Ignorance of law is not a defense and Trump's biz has been revealed to not have a compliance department, showing the lawless culture that facilitates corporate style crime.
Juries aren't stupid, when all your associates have immunity or are convicted of crime, innocence explanations become implausible.

I did not want my relatives to take time from their jobs to attend so the prosecutors, designated, public pretender and presiding did as they wished. If it was due process why was it necessary to falsify the transcripts so extensively they became fake histories? I can't say about the pre-arraignments or afterhours intimidation arraignment but the pretrial, trial, post trial , pre sentencing and sentencing- all documents forged beyond recognition from events as they happened. It's unlikely that will happen to the same extent or even at all in this case or any subsequent one involving citizen Trump. You might consider why it's done at all at any time, though. Additionally, why are we fed media filtered information(?) and awful court artist pastel sketches instead of live cameras from multiple angles independent of court or corporate news control? A crew could install dozens discretely mounted in the courtroom in the 18 hour recess between sessions. At the very least the citizens of New York State should be able to witness justice being served in their name. Do you agree? What do you think about the transcript issue?
