There is just something so timeless and beautiful, in a tragic way, about this ending. Arthas climbs the steps, recalling all the mistakes, all the warnings he ignored, all the people he lost that were close to him, all that he pushed away. and when he stands before the lich king, alone, isolated, possibly full of resentment but having no other choice, he breaks the ice and takes the crown. as he puts on the crown the world around him crumbles like his life did, he was to be a king one day, with a queen and children, and lead a nation as a just ruler like his father. but the damned path he decided to walk leads him to the opposite, while he becomes a king in the end, he is ultimately a king of nothing. as the camera zooms out we see the waste of nothingness that he rules, devoid of loyal subjects, friends, cheers, life. all he has is a cold throne placed so high that all can see what a failure he has become. and he sits there, unmoving, almost dead like, looking out over the world, alone with his thoughts.
Arthas' story should have ended there. Him either becoming Ner'zhul new body or one new entity that's neither of them are both far more suitable conclusions to Arthas' damnation than him somehow killing off his liege in a novel or lorebook.

One of the most depressing and chilling endings of all time. This ending is amazing because the Lich King actually succeeded but in the sky there is sunlight which is a glimmer of hope.

Sargeras, Kil'Jaeden, the Old Gods (Which were kinda introduced in WC3 with the Forgotten One), etc were the main plot-points of WoW, and we never even knew much about the forces of Death, or what magics were really used to make the LK as powerful as he was (It wasn't demonic magics, so there was still some explanation to be made about that, too). The Void Lords work as they fit with the Lovecraftian vibe the Void has (The Old Gods representing the Great Old Ones, and the Void Lords representing the Outer Gods), and the First Ones are a thing because they're basically the top beings of the Warcraft cosmos. I get why people think the LK's the true "ending", but Warcraft was NEVER Arthas' story alone. To say that would be to ignore the 2 other games prior (WC2 and WC: Orcs and Humans), as well as World of Warcraft (Where the main character is the Player).
@@preds43 Even though I do like seeing stuff like this getting a continuation, nowadays the WoW lore is poorly executed, I think it started to get noticeable back in Cataclysm, then got worse with each expansion (except for Legion, they managed to finish Illidans story pretty well), there were some bright moments here and there(usually in the cinematics) but overall the story is brought down by the focus on the "super special" faceless player's character, by stupid events like the whole Draenor time travel expansion that's just an excuse to have a flashback episode and to poorly set up Gul'dan being in Legion while it could be anyone else, by timegates and tons of unrelated filler content. The main story of BfA was pretty lame to play through no matter how much they tried to make it work by throwing N'zoth in at the last second and Shadowlands looks like a really bad fanfiction so far.

Ah yes, remember one of your favorite and most iconic video game endings ever? well turns out Nerzhul was manipulated by the nathrezim who were sent by Sire Denathrius who was being used by the Jailer to manipulate arthas with a runeblade that was created by a runeforger that was being used by the Jailer to create the lich king which he could control to kill everyone on Azeroth so he could use their souls in order to rebel against his parents because they made reality in a way he didnt very much like.
If I'm not mistaken when we faced him atop of ICC he technically wasn't even at his most powerful. He was indeed very powerful and being at the throne his most potent but given more time he could have become even stronger. Bolvar on the other hand is taking his time and gaining power....curious what will become of him.
ryan edwards He was severely wounded by sylvannas blight attack at the wrath gate and retreated to recover atop ICC only to be interrupted by 25 goofballs and a paladin.

Warcraft 3d story telling and cinematics were top notch. Cinematic of Arthas entering and succeeding his father and the cinematic of "Hellscream and thrall against Monoroth" and "death of Hellscream while Thrall collapsing on his knees beside" are especially the ones for me.
This and Groms Sacrefice are still the best cinematics in the entire blizz arsenal. Sure some might look better now but the combination between story and visual is just top notch in those two
The worst/best part of this is, is that (besides of how accurate is with the reailty, with the matter of having predicted the future of the franchise), is that it REALLY feels like the bad ending that is supossed to be. The first time that I watched this, I could not help thinking in the question "It was really worth it?". We did all this journey only to end up condemning Arthas more, and bringing something worse to the world, literally our mission, from the beginning, was to ruin everything (we stopped Illidan from destroying the Lich king, we ruined Miaev's life, we destroyed the alliance and human survivors, Silvanas become the Queen of Lordaeron, we enslaved Draenor and the elves, and we follow the entire Theramore conflict)., this time there was not a happy ending like in Warcraft 3, where at least, despite everything, we defeated Archimonde and The Legion, but this time it didnt happen, and the game ensures to make you know the weigth of our actions, with just showing you a dead Arthas at the end. Its literally a funeral.
That is the tragedy of this story: all these choices was Arthas, starting all the way back with Stratholme. The perfect representation of "one bad day".
You boys can't even imagine, finishing TFT to THIS. God it was one of the most amazing moment in Warcraft III history. The fact that you can hear the voices of all the victims he did over the whole warcraft game makes it even more sad.

This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful storylines ever in modern literature. Though I have never had the chance to play the World Of Warcraft sequel, I have got to say the character development of Prince Arthas just before his ascent to the Icecrown Citadel and eventually the Undead Kingdom thereafter-- is a true masterpiece of scriptwriting.
I really like how Arthas, The Paladin, inside of him is trying so fiercely to turn him away from the Helm of Domination, by using memories from his past evil doings. Masterful work.

Taking a look at that outward zoom at the very end, the glacier region surrounding frozen thone really looks like untouched wilderness. It could just be for the sake of dramatic/cinematic effect to display that narrative of melancholic isolation here. However, I’d really rather like to speculate that Arthas decided to build up Icecrown Citadel to what it would become only after he became one with the Lich King. In other words, it was Arthas’ own will that claimed all the glory and power in Northrend. He did not just simply inherit a vast kingdom to continue ruling over; he had work to improve upon what would become his legacy.
They can release as many damn expansions, patches and game updates as they want. Blizzard will never reach this level of storytelling, character development or raw epicness ever again.
This is probably the most chillin and emotional trailer from warcraft... But who i am to say... I only have two huge arthas tattos on my legs... He will be always my prince and king. ❤

When Blizzard was still amazing. The story of Arthas was by far one of the best story arcs ever.

The jailer needed the vessels of domination. The sword and armor to be forged and combined with anduin for this plan to work. He even said it himself.

@@fedor6514 How? Warcraft's story was NEVER going to end with the Lich King. You'd be a fool to suggest otherwise. Sargeras, Kil'Jaeden, the Old Gods (Which were kinda introduced in WC3 with the Forgotten One), etc were the main plot-points of WoW, and we never even knew much about the forces of Death, or what magics were really used to make the LK as powerful as he was (It wasn't demonic magics, so there was still some explanation to be made about that, too). The Void Lords work as they fit with the Lovecraftian vibe the Void has (The Old Gods representing the Great Old Ones, and the Void Lords representing the Outer Gods), and the First Ones are a thing because they're basically the top beings of the Warcraft cosmos.
I get why people think the LK's the true "ending", but Warcraft was NEVER Arthas' story alone. To say that would be to ignore the 2 other games prior (WC2 and WC: Orcs and Humans), as well as World of Warcraft (Where the main character is the Player).
@@preds43 Even though I do like seeing stuff like this getting a continuation, nowadays the WoW lore is poorly executed, I think it started to get noticeable back in Cataclysm, then got worse with each expansion (except for Legion, they managed to finish Illidans story pretty well), there were some bright moments here and there(usually in the cinematics) but overall the story is brought down by the focus on the "super special" faceless player's character, by stupid events like the whole Draenor time travel expansion that's just an excuse to have a flashback episode and to poorly set up Gul'dan being in Legion while it could be anyone else, by timegates and tons of unrelated filler content. The main story of BfA was pretty lame to play through no matter how much they tried to make it work by throwing N'zoth in at the last second and Shadowlands looks like a really bad fanfiction so far.

If I'm not mistaken when we faced him atop of ICC he technically wasn't even at his most powerful. He was indeed very powerful and being at the throne his most potent but given more time he could have become even stronger. The worst/best part of this is, is that (besides of how accurate is with the reailty, with the matter of having predicted the future of the franchise), is that it REALLY feels like the bad ending that is supossed to be. The first time that I watched this, I could not help thinking in the question "It was really worth it?".
We did all this journey only to end up condemning Arthas more, and bringing something worse to the world, literally our mission, from the beginning, was to ruin everything (we stopped Illidan from destroying the Lich king, we ruined Miaev's life, we destroyed the alliance and human survivors, Silvanas become the Queen of Lordaeron, we enslaved Draenor and the elves, and we follow the entire Theramore conflict)., this time there was not a happy ending like in Warcraft 3, where at least, despite everything, we defeated Archimonde and The Legion, but this time it didnt happen, and the game ensures to make you know the weigth of our actions, with just showing you a dead Arthas at the end. Its literally a funeral.

This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful storylines ever in modern literature. Though I have never had the chance to play the World Of Warcraft sequel, I have got to say the character development of Prince Arthas just before his ascent to the Icecrown Citadel and eventually the Undead Kingdom thereafter-- is a true masterpiece of scriptwriting.

I remember finishing wc3 and immediately wanting to play wc4 because of this.
Taking a look at that outward zoom at the very end, the glacier region surrounding frozen thone really looks like untouched wilderness. It could just be for the sake of dramatic/cinematic effect to display that narrative of melancholic isolation here. However, I’d really rather like to speculate that Arthas decided to build up Icecrown Citadel to what it would become only after he became one with the Lich King. In other words, it was Arthas’ own will that claimed all the glory and power in Northrend. He did not just simply inherit a vast kingdom to continue ruling over; he had work to improve upon what would become his legacy.
