That's why Rawkus Records became the alternative and at the same time, people were calling Rawkus Records backpack rap. This was when the EastCoast was still the dominant region. Instead of championing Rawkus Records, DuckDown, and other authentic EastCoast music, y'all perpetuated contemporary EastCoast music from Puffy with the shiny suits. Jay-Z also has to take responsibility. He openly admitted to dumbing down his music on Vol. 2 to sell more records. Jay helped push that mediocre music with Mo money, mo cash, moHoes/money ain't a thang type of sound.

It’s similar in terms of the hip hop. A lot of the southern hip hop is mumble rap. Not all of it, but a lot of it is. It’s also why a lot of the south thinks Jay-Z is wack. They don’t understand a lot of it.

That’s true. I live in Texas and Jay-Z doesn’t have a lot of hard core fans down here. Every once in a blue moon you’ll hear one of his old tunes on radio but it’s rare. I think most southern Hip Hop fans just like hearing people with similar accents. And a partial reason why NYC hasn’t been relevant for over two decades now.
