On the JF506E there is a fill tube that is used to check the level and add fluid. This can be accessed from underneath the Automatic Gearbox. This looks like a Hex Bolt, unless it has been replaced. It is important to get the fluid level correct. This is done with the Engine running. Just do a search on the JF506E Automatic Gearbox. A drain, measure and refill will only put the level of fluid back to the previous level. This Gearbox is used on many different Cars such as Landrover. If you go to a Gearbox specialist, I have no doubt that they will know that there is a fill tube. If you think about it, it makes sense that there needs to be a method of filling the Gearbox up to the recommended level. Please do you own research.

    Great video and good pointers.
However, the 24 who didn’t like the video are the transmission techs who lost work due to the fact this DIY video saved time and money. As far as the transmission goes-“Sealed for life” sounds good when you’re looking to buy a vehicle so the hassle & expense of service is non existent.
I recommend doing a search for someone who has experienced same or similar issues and can provide the specs needed to safely service your vehicle on your own. 👍🏻

Slowing changing about a pans worth of trans fluid (3-4 quarts) took away the dreaded ZF 6 transmission "Lurch".
I'm on my 3rd drain the trans pan and refill and maybe after the 5th, I'll drop the pan and change to the new pan/filter (built in) and do the full trans oil change then. Some people recommend saving the oil oil to have as back up in case the new oil causes problems.
I started at Jag back in Jan of 2004. Back then you had warranty wars going on with each auto company trying to outdo each other in size and coverage. Remember how incredible Chryslers warranties were? I think it was part of the reason they went bankrupt.
Jaguar (under Ford control) advertised a lifetime transmission oil .A XJ, XK or S Type (with the same V8) held an unbelievable amount of transmission oil, something like 12-14+ quarts. The replacement oil was as high as $50-$70 per quart.
Without labor, you'd be dropping $700-$900 + just for magic transmission fluid, (what we called liquid gold).
The Master Techs were told not to change the fluid. There was no need. They weren't even being told the life time warranty was only for the life of the warranty. If a customer came in and wanted to pay the $1,200 (parts and labor) 80% of them were turned away, saying no need to change it. The ones that demanded to have it changed and signed a form saying they are changing against the recommendation of the dealership, and any damage that results is on them. That's what it took to have their oil changed.
Not knowing any better, I thought it was some kind of super advanced oil that had a oil breakdown heat unreachable for street driving. Nope! Auto companies idea of "Life Time" is very different from what we think "life time" means. I thought it meant the life of the engine. Nope. It meant the life time of the new car warranty. After that, auto company and the transmission company are though with you and tough shit if the trans goes bad.
It took years, but finally ZF admitted as long as you used a transmission oil with matching specs it was fine and that the trans oil should be changed every 40,000 miles (something like that...)
You can now go to pretty much any department store (Meijer, Walmart) or auto supply store (Pep Boys, O Rilly's, etc...) and buy a trans oil with the same specs for under $40 bucks if there's a sale going on. Quite a difference from what ZF was demanding that any car with a ZF trans use. I think ZF transmissions are the best in the world. They're tough enough to hold 550 hp, yet are smooth enough for a elderly person coming out of a Lincoln.
However, they make it very difficult to change the oil. On the ZF 6 the fill plug is on the side with only 2.5 " of room to get the bolt in and out. You have to drain, fill with engine off, then run the engine and go though the gears, they while the engines running, refill until a light (but steady) steam of oil comes out. Then you go for a drive, come back, lift the car again (making sure the trans pan is perfectly level) and check to see if there is a light ( but steady) stream of oil coming out. If not put more in until it does.
And they want you to do this in a 10 degree difference in temp. You should get one of the laser pointers that measure temp.
There are alot of old Jags and BMW's with the ZF trans that have never had the trans oil changed. I wouldn't recommend a full change if it's never been done. Just drain the pain and refill with fresh oil. You can only change about 3-4 quarts that way. Do that every 2 months to get the trans used to the new oil and to slowly remove any sludge that the trans has been using for friction. I've been doing that on a Jaguar S TYPE with the V8/ZF 6 combo.
It just keeps shifting better and better ever time I swap a trans pan worth of oil. MPG also went up and it's much faster.
On a newer car, you should start changing the trans oil around 40k-60k mark. But on cars with over a 100k its better to slowly (over a year) change only a pans worth of oil.
      Good luck.

Nothing short of spectacular.. information I’m sure is greatly appreciated and Ives not only myself peace of mind but other who are a little hesitant about the transmission service.
Myself I still have to give out how exactly to revive it correctly. I’ve only did a drain and fill and the vehicle wasn’t driven in a couple years and I wanted to replace trans pan and filter- I never seen any info on this. Thanks for the info 👍🏻

Usually about 3.5 quarts come out from what I understand...and that would mean if when you start the process the correct amount is in there. That is why it is a good Idea to start with the level check plug and make sure it is filled up to max first.

Good luck. Chris Fix talks about the difference between what he calls a change and a flush. I don't know if shops that offer a flush do any such thing. Therefore, the drain and replace might not be stupid.

    • @doccpu7
      @doccpu7 5 лет назад

I dont think any auto manu recommends what they call a flush. it voids most warranties. Some places do have a machine that sucks out the fluid, runs it thru a filter and puts it back in while hot . These do an ok job. most places just dump the fluid and add some back. Note if the fluid is black I do not recommend a fluid swap. usually if the fluid is black it is from burnt clutches which will slip and totally fail with in a week of a dump and fill. If its black its too late.Just put old fluid back into the transmission and start saving for a rebuild. If its got shiny metal bits in it then also plan on a rebuild. If its brown then a dump and fill with new may be in order with a new filter.
