- In this video, I go over the setup of gaming on a new Linux install. This is from the viewpoint of a Windows user coming to Linux.
1. Install the needed programs Lutris / Stream
2. Make sure you configure ESYNC / DXVK
DXVK - github.com/lutris/lutris/wiki...
ESYNC - github.com/lutris/lutris/wiki... .

I challenge you play The Sims 3 and 4 on Linux!
Why wine-staging instead of wine-stable?
in my case its chrombook to linux
I have a lot of hit or miss compatibility with native linux games, when I'm not using Ubuntu. Just realized that if I run them in command line, I can get error messages, instead of them just mysteriously not launching. Are there any typical error messages that I should watch for?
This type of video is why the channel has blown up (in linux creator terms obv). You seem to target the bits/areas that often get neglected by other creators and I would just like to say thanks for that. You are like a ninja who dances between the noobs and cliques and you are putting up some really great content.
Thanks for the kind comment Millz!
Yep
Steam proton and Lutris are actually very good thanks to them I no longer need Windows
Yup they really helped me switch this past year as well!
I actually have not setup Lutris. I only played a couple games from Origin and Uplay. Epic store came out after I made the switch, so I'm staying away from that. I don't really have a reason to set up Lutris, other than maybe for emulators, which I might do at some point. But other than that Steam has everything that I need for gaming. Also maybe you can do a video about steamplay/proton and protondb.
@@randalgradle7415 I do not play many Lutris games, most of which I play work natively on Steam or through Proton and some through the GOG installer
@@kevinyoliveira68 I never really looked into any games on GOG and when I did none of them caught my eyes.
@@randalgradle7415 I am interested in buying at GOG because of non-DRM
Man I really appreciate all your videos as a 30 year windows and computer tech veteran I am on day 7 of a new computer build and tumbleweed install and you have been my go to guy for sure and everything is working as advertised and gaming is flawless 👍
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos, they helped me finally make the switch to Linux fully. I've run a dual boot machine for a long time but would always find myself back in windows as in a gamer and would just want something to work. After watching a lot of your videos I'm fully set up and haven't had a single issue getting a game going and no longer dual boot! Thank you!
Thank you. Without tutorials like this I wouldn't be able to get most things done in Lenox
Update week 2 and thanks to all your informative videos I've got most of my steam and Origin games up and running on my new AMD/ATI Rig in tumbleweed without any major issues and loving the performance all around thanks again and will continue to follow and learn 👍
Thanks for tutorials and effort, Chris :)
Thank you very much for this video. After going through these steps it seems so easy, but before being shown it was greek. Extremely helpful, love your channel. Thanks again!
Awesome videos man, i never cared much for linux, but because of a friend and youtube i wanna get in. Thank you!
1. download PopOS
2. install it on your PC
3. install Steam
4. activate Proton
5. set Steam feature to use Proton for all games
6. install games
7. and PLAY!!!!!!!!
Thanks for this video Chris. It was immensely useful to a new Linux user
Just gotta say how helpful these videos have been to help me through my first Linux install. I couldn't get Pop OS to work for some reason - I kept getting a hardware error during installation, but Ubuntu is working fine and I'll be gaming on it in no time thanks to you!
Wow great video learned a lot. Thanks for this.
This is quality content, subscribed;
I learned a lot. Thank you.
of course titus is the best
Already did all this but it would have been nice to have a video like this to help me out when I first started with Linux gaming. I had to piece this whole puzzle together by googling various sources but I definitely felt satisfied when I got my games setup.
thanks I was looking for this
I hope you never run out of content(was going to say interesting content, but then realised that it is you that make the content interesting).
I don't have the hardware to play just yet, I have been trying to invest in a new rig but at my location it is pretty challenging to get the parts you want. Also as a new father I had to re-evaluate my priorities, I hoping to get an entry level amd rig maybe at the start of next year, and I know I will be back to these videos.
Sorry for the personal stuff I just felt like sharing I guess.
Gaming? How can Linux game when it doesn't have Candy Crush Saga pre-installed, plus a bunch of bloat running in the background and collecting your data? Disgusting.
(jk)
Haha ;) Coming up... Candy Crush Distro! Main Feature: You delete it... and it just keeps coming backup every time you update!
Do you know there were some games in history, which stopped to work correctly when they reached FPS over 60, because the programmers never expected that? These linux people are risking... maybe with all these performance tweaks their windows games will stop working too, because they will run too fast on linux... :P :)
@@ChrisTitusTech I might attempt to create that distro one day just for the kicks 'n giggles :)
@@ped7g _The human eye can't see anything above the cinematic 24 FPS, so those Linux people are just wasting their time._
But now seriously, do such games actually exist? That sounds real stupid.
great stuff thank you !
There's some things i didn't even know myself, thanks chris

JessicaFEREM, this is some bs than (there is no such thing as “both”).
This video is great. I ended up getting World Of Warcraft working by using PopOS and Lutris. The only thing additionally I needed to do was install the wininet and winhttp .DLL's and set to native under winecfg. This was the final hurdle in my transformation from Windows. Thank you!
I must say this might be a lot late but I like what you are doing here
you putting your side by side reminds me how convenient a transparent terminal really is so thanks for the nudge xD
transparent terminal+mouse focus follow+ no raise on click is terminal bliss owo
i have also set the terminal to autostart in maximise mode, now i'm just looking for a way to focus any window below it without raising them, or to show/hide my terminal on demand cause i'm loving my terminal now xD
Excellent youtuber. great content.
Nice video !
Thanks so much man.
This is knowledge that i need, thanks very much. >___
Best linux tech youtuber
thank you so much you saved my life I was lost ... please could you make more vids tasting some of the famous games how to install them manually without steam ..Thanx
Thank you, Chris. For well over a decade I have always avoided Wine as the first step back towards the Closed Side. Even now, on Lutris, I only have a few Linux native games. But then I use Chrome and Android for Netflix these days so... I had used Gimp and Star Office (precursor to Open and Libre) etc on Windows for almost a year before no longer dual booting and going Linux only. But for Windows users these days, your suggestions will be tremendously useful.
Since two days I left completely the windows world including my main rig for games etc. For the mircosoft office stuff I have created a virtual machine and I had to do some tweaking for getting my mouse to work correct. Diablo 3 and World of tanks are installed currently but I do not see any problem to install other games later on. Future will see if Linux is the one to go but I'm very happy and in a good for the future!
AWESOME WORK CHRIS. THANK YOU FOR THIS MUCH OF SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY. WILL SUBSCRIBE AND FOLLOW YOU.
++ FOR SUPPORTING PopOS !!!
Hey, Chris please make a tutorial about calibrating the monitor using gnome colour manager or other software, this might useful for gaming and photo editing.
Thanks for the video. It would be nice to get a tutorial on some of the package management related terminal commands. For instance, I am not sure when to use 'wget' vs 'apt install'. Also, which directory do all packages get installed in?
I e been trying to figure out gaming for a long time thanks for the video. Can you do one on gaming keyboards the extra arrows mapping ect? I have Alex steelseries with 6 arrows I cant figure out.
Great Job! you inspire me to switch and leave Windows behind. I do have one questions through where do I find for example hello neighbor save game file path in pop os? is it under steam? because i was able to play the game using proton. Thanks
Hey Chris get this! I was thinking all along to switch my powerful gaming pc to Manjaro GNU/Linux in my machine. I tried with a live usb and it feels flawlessly, but I haven't reformatted and always back up my files which is good. I have a lot of experience with the terminal so I should be good to go until I finish my games that is not yet fixed in the proton that I looked up in the database, but I'm sure I can do it without them.
Just letting anyone know that hopefully I'm gonna get back to RUclips because GOD it's so long that I haven't uploaded videos since a long time that I was busy with my university.
nice
When you complete this series, I think I'm going to jump both feet into Linux. I'm not sure if you have seen any of my comments regarding extra SSD drives, linux and gaming, but a fellow Titus Clone mentioned something called LVM. I'm going to do some research about it but is that something that could be a future video?
Another great video, now this is the kind of stuff I want to see. :) also I have heard that using wine on Linux can be a security risk. If so is there a way to make using wine more secure on Linux?. Or am I just being paranoid :). lol
Technically it is, because it can run Windows viruses and I've actually done this! However, most make it out to be way worse than it is. First, the virus isn't run as sudo or root (all wine executables should be run as your user) and it is isolated to your home folder. Second, it pretty much stays inside the wine bottle. In my case it locked up my system and upon rebooting, I simply deleted my Wine Bottle and poof the virus was gone. So don't worry about it too much ;)
@@ChrisTitusTech Cool, thanks Chris Would it be worth setting up a second account for just gaming ?.
Hi Chris,
I've now moved 100% over to linux using your guide.
I'm already very pleased with the result.
I wonder, will gamemode automatically be used when running games through steam natively? Or do I have to use launch options for that?
hadnt even watched it yet, but ive given a like. always love your vids man. personally, i use Xubuntu. hows your feels about it?
I always have a sweet spot for any Ubuntu spin. Putting a lightweight DE like XFCE on it... there really isn't too many distributions out there that I would like more than that combination ;)
@@ChrisTitusTech Agreed :)
Great video, and very relevant to me since I just installed Pop!_OS 19.10 on my gaming/media PC. I have an NVIDIA card, so for the __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH environment variable, the Lutris wiki page you referenced just says "/path/to/location." Do you know if I can point it to any directory, or does it have to be a directory in my user home?
What about mods? Some mods for games come as .EXE installers, not just files to drag and drop replace. What's the workflow for installing these?
How does gamemode interfere with a overclocked cpu or do I even need gamemode when I have oc'ed my cpu?
Updated to 19.04 ubuntu mate and gamemode installs without a hitch! Will update when games install/run and I would like to know where I can add you Chris and other watchers!
any idea why adding the gamemode into lutris pref menu not saving the copy and pasted location after i click save?
Dear Chris. Great video. Could you please do a tutorial on installing the Steam Library onto the internal backup drive. Many thanks.
Great idea Jack! I'll add it to the list.
@@ChrisTitusTech Thank you.
Seconding this!!!
Chris, after gamemode install and setting Lutris with the parameters you showed, some games still need this gamemoderun %command% added into the game launch parameters themselves. Not sure why, but, I think it's also the reason that some of the Windows only games fail. Rage 2 was failing on me until I added it into the games own launch parameters.
I haven't seen this, but good to know. Thanks for the comment!
Maybe it's just an Arch thing? Not sure. I'm going to install Pop!_OS again and give it another try. I had great luck before, but, bad luck in the 18.04 release.
Hi Chris, I'm trying to follow along with this but I keep getting "unable to locate package" messages when trying to install DXVK and gamemode. I'm on Linux Mint 19.1 MATE edition. I'm guessing that I'm just missing a PPA or two but have no idea what they would be. Any thoughts? BTW, love your channel. I'm just now making the switch from Win 7 to Linux Mint and your videos have been VERY helpful. Thank you!
Finally Parrot Os libreoffice has worked.
Hey Chris! Huge thanks to you, i finally moved to Pop!_OS bcs of your Videos and bcs Windows pissed me off :)
But i have a Question (im a noob):
Everytime i try to install the GameMode i get an Error "E: Package cannot be found".
How can i fix that. I googled a bit, but im unsure bout this (bcs im a Noob with Terminal/console installing)
I had trouble switching Pop!_OS to KDE (black screen, wouldn't load at all), so I just used Kubuntu instead. This caused a few problems, in that I had to add the Lutris repository. Other than that, great tutorial (and even that isn't really a problem, as this tutorial is aimed at Pop!_OS, not Kubuntu).
I also experienced a weird glitch, whereby the 430 drivers would download, but the system would default to the xorg drivers, so I went back to 418, and no problems.
I have found that Kubuntu runs as fast off my 5400rpm 1TB HDD as Windows 10 does off my M.2 NVme SSD!
where is the "Next"> "Next" and done, like in Windows
OR the are your sure you want to run this prompt? LOL
or the "restart required"
Once again a great video and I did hear you say something about a fix for origin in Lutris and was wondering as when trying to install Bf4 in origin once it downloads the game fails to install and would like info on a known fix thanks.
Use Protonified 3.21 wine version. There is also a 4. verison I'm testing right now that is working pretty good. I've used it to play Anthem on my Twitch Streams.
Found the fix on another RUclips post thanks

All it was is deleting cab files in the directx install folder as stated on lutris website and it's working 100 %
Is there a way to change that K symbol where the windows app jar would be in Windows ???? , i'd like to change it with a list icon.
What to play game for?
I am a linux user, an year ago I had used manjaro xfce desktop now I use Linux Mint Mate. Now the ram consumption is very high and mate is smooth but not stable like xfce. Should I change my desktop again to xfce. I am planning to just change my desktop environment by using package manager not clean install. What should I do .
Where can I fine that utility in the top right of ur screen??
What exactly is Esync? Is it like Vsync? If so, what if you have a Freesync monitor and don't enable Vsync in Windows? Will the same be true in Linux?
In my case a lot of things just didn't work at all.Like I wasn't able to open lutris.
Any good place you know that you can go to find help when a game doesn't work? Because I was trying to play Surviving mars and I found a ton of stuff for like last year saying that patch broke things but I would think that by now that was fix and their reason for crashing weren't the reason I was having for a crash and I never did find a solution.
doesn't pop os come with the dx thing by default? and isn't proton built on wine? i'm confused, i went with pop os bc games were supposed to work out of the box
I'm a bit confused about where to put the keys. I am using Arco Linux and my version of Lutris .5.2.1-2 does not have any of those options in system preferences. My options are under the 2nd tab labeled System Options. I did figure out how to enable feral gaming mode via the lib32-gamemode being automatically checked after I installed it, but I have no idea where I should put the mesa-glthread=true key. Any help appreciated.
Whenever a game from Origin is installed through Lutris, it always installs another copy of Origin alone with the game. Is that avoidable or a necessary evil?
can you please make video abt the best distro for gaming and productivity (CATIA, MATLAB, labVIEW,.....)
So I tried this, and was pretty excited at first.. but as I rebooted over the couple of days I had linux, lutris suddenly couldn't find my game pr. default. Something about a wineprefix... and another thing was that I could get into my UEFI BIOS or boot from a USB. So ultimately I decided to re-install windows. A crying shame, because I really would like to have something other than windows. But Linux is too fiddly at the moment, to also have a performance hit on gaming. I could live just fine with the 10 less frames in BFV, if everything else was a walk in the park.
So I've climbed back up on my "windows"-ledge, wandering back and forth, wondering when I should dive in again. Thank you for the great video, Chris
Works for battle net heros of the storm?
Make a video about installing latest nvdia drivers in debian!!
Tried following the instructions at wineHQ to add repo and install winehq-staging. It fails with unmet dependency "wine-staging (= 4.8 bionic)" but that's not in my repos anywhere. Searching for wine-staging elsewhere on wineHQ just leads me back to the same page. I also don't have dxvk in the repos, but I haven't gotten around to looking at the website for that yet. Any clues on the wine issue?
Thanks for the videos. I’ve been trying pop os because of them. Was great at first but doesn’t do or give me what you show. Not sure what or how to go from here. I’m tired of Microsoft and my iPhone has never let me down so I guess I’ll try Mac.

I am back trying Linux again on an older Intel i3 laptop which currently has Windows 7 and a Ausus T100 tablet that has Windows 8. I have Win 10 on my AMD Quad core desktop. I have no interest in buying a new computer to get Windows 11 security. I had Mint running on the i3 core but would crash as well as I never could get wine to run. I hope to get wine to run this time just so I can use the Nikon and Pentax camera raw file software. I tried using Darktable in both Linux and Windows but it ran too slow for my taste. Thanks for the videos which I hope will help me succeed this time.
On my Manjaro box installing lib32-gamemode activated the gamemode switch in Lutris.
Yeah, the same on my Manjaro install. It looks like Lutris is recognizing path on its own on Arch-based distros so the preload is not needed.
Ubuntu and I believe POP_OS Lutris works with sudo apt install gamemode:i386 for recognizing it directly.
What about linux emulators rs like gba ds etc?
Big Linux scene, I'll touch on these in the future. Currently I run a RetroPie spin with a ton of old games that My kids and I play.
How does this process differ on Manjaro? I'm looking for productivity and gaming, and I've decided Manjaro is the distro ide like to learn
I'm currently using Elementary OS Juno with all the updates, nvidia-430.14 driver and kernel 5.1.4-050104-generic on a i7 8700k and a RTX 2080. It's weird that the driver recognizes the 2080 as a GTX 1180. I've got 3 games installed and they all run well, Skyrim is the only that does not exit cleanly and locks up the desktop forcing me to reboot or open a new session and try to kill the game that way. So far I've been unable to find a fix for this, I also experienced the same problem with Fallout 4 on a previous attempt at using a linux distro.
I'm on Pop! OS and wine-staging wasn't available. Will just installing wine work? Nvm. Just needed to watch a few more seconds of your vid and then I got my answer.

Is it possible for you to make a script that fix i all in one go?
I think yes.
Everything can be scripted ;) I haven't done it though.
Please make a video tutorial about how to play Battlerite on Linux :^)
What about compatibility, will this work with older games? DirectX 9 games?
Yes it will. DX9 games typically don't have native performance, but usually that is ok, because they are so old that they run fine anyways.
Depends but many games that work with DirectX9 runs very well only some like the LOL that causes Anti_Cheat sometimes breaks, Anti-Cheat is one of the enemies of LinuxersGamers :(
@@kevinyoliveira68 It's not just about Linux, Anti-Cheat causes a lot of trouble in Windows, too.

By the way D9VK got released this weeks . It's direct x 9 support added to DXVK. It double the FPS in most DX9 games. You can download the release compiled dll on Joshua-Ashton/d9vk github. It can be added to lutris runtime or manually installed to a wine prefix or just manually copied in the game folder.
I have a gaming keyboard . When I press ctrl or alt key it registers as shift key. On another keyboard some keys don't register at all.

I need to understand the differences between Kubuntu and PopOS+KDE
Because if popos is better than kubuntu I probably will advice to new linux people to use that instead of Kubuntu.
thanks for the video.
Better is subjective. They are different in the aspect that PopOS includes a bunch of tweaks to help new users where Kubuntu does not. Changing PopOS from GNOME to KDE is easy (see other video) and why I took this approach. Kubuntu is pretty much a direct fork of Ubuntu with no changes other than it using KDE Instead of GNOME out of the box.
@@ChrisTitusTech I need to set up my kvm box to give it a try. :)
I have had many errors trying to install dxvk and wine regarding dependencies. If anyone else falls into this error, try installing just lutris on it's own "sudo apt install lutris" and then somehow you can install winehq-staging without any errors. Regarding dxvk I am still getting errors regarding "can't find package" so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

If you're just playing minecraft you don't really need to do anything to your linux install apart from maybe install drivers, just download the file from the minecraft website, do sudo apt install minecraft-launcher, or open Software Manager/Pop Shop/Ubuntu Software, search Minecraft and press install.
Chris. my internal wifi card on my hp laptop went bad. I bought Netgear nighthawk ac1900. but I found out it's not a plug and play :(. could you help with getting this working ? any. any help is appreciated.
For copy paste, try selecting text then go to terminal and click middle mouse button (click the wheel). Much faster than anything on windows.
Powershell just requires a right-click to paste what is in your clipboard so I am not sure how middle click is any faster. And for keyboard it is Ctrl+V for powershell and for Linux terminal it is Shift+Insert (or Ctrl+Shift+V). So not much difference either way. Ctrl+V however is slightly more convenient.
@@metamaverick I don't know what powershell is but middle mouse button doesn't need a copy. Just select and then hit middle button to paste. Also, it works for all X-windows and terminals.
