Savatage. Probably the most criminally underrated metal band in the world in my opinion . A band that should have been up there with legends like Maiden and Priest.. So much potential and such an amazing body of work..just got unlucky
Savatage were one of those bands that when you had to hear them, nothing else would do until you got it out of your system. That album Power of the Night and Sirens totally blew me away 👍👍👍
Oh. How I love when I see people aknowledging Cris Oliva. Such underated musician and true talent. My favourite guitarist. Pls make more solos. Mentaly yours, he carves his stone, lights out etc
My band opened for Savatage twice at the Living Room Prov RI. Alabama Slammers were all we drank. Criss and the boyz meant everything to us. This time in my life is something few can imagine. But imagine crazy, then amplify that... And you get close.
Definitely the most underrated Metalband ever, Savatage deserved much more fame than they got. In my opinion Jon is one of the greatest songwriters of the past 40 years, his other projects also offer high quality in music.
What a great video. I met Chris on this tour and was gutted when he passed. But I appreciate you showing this one. Great tribute to an amazing song writer and guitarist.
I absolutely love all the Maiden stuff that you do , and have to say it was a breath of fresh air and great memories to hear the Savatage …beautiful work , precise to a tee . Would not hurt my feelings to see you cover Hall of the Mountain King 🤘
Crushed it! Criss was one of the most underated guitarist as was Savatage as a band. Can only dream what Criss would have come if he wasn't taken from us so young. Over 30 years ago and and still his stuff stands the test of time!
Thank you! Considering he apparently played and practiced all day, every day... I can't even imagine what kind of craziness he might have been able to produce with another 30 years! At least we can be grateful for the awesomeness we do have. 😊
Adrian Smith, Randy Rhoads, Criss Oliva, Dimebag Darrell and Chuck Schuldiner are my top 5 favorite guitarists. Our tastes look a bit similar Nicko. Good job man!
Thanks mate that was awesome. One of the greats, Savatage never recovered in my opinion after the tragic loss of Chris, it brought me to tears watching yiu play that I remember playing in my cover band that very song and it still makes me emotional. RIP Chris
Just as good today as it was when it was released. Criss was an amazing player taken from us far too early and it is a shame that most people never even knew who Savatage were. I love every one of the early albums, and most of the later ones. Great job with the solo, and the video. Please do more Savatage.
He’s my favorite guitar player of all time! And I’m good friends with Dr. Killdrums my friend Pete Rossi was in a band Reverence with him until he died after the second album came out when they were working on the third live album. Tons of videos if you want to check him out. He also did a instrumental version of Summers rain from that album. He was trying to get in Savatage whenever Pitrelli was going to Megadeth. But didn’t realize Savatage was in hiatus because of the success of Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the time. You should check out his video Pete Rossi Summers rain a Tribute to CrissOliva
Criss is the only Guitarist I have ever seen use a steel pick. Was lucky enough to ask him about it after a show and he told me he liked the way it slid across the string over the plastic picks..
I was honored to have known a few of the members of Savatage, we've since lost contact with each other about 15 or so years ago. Criss & John Oliva, Chris Caffery, Paul O'Neill, after Criss' untimely death it was just never a chance of recovery until the magic of their side project TSO came to life, & probably could never have become so successful without Caffery's familiarity with Criss' style. I used to bump into Caffery & Ozborne on 7th Avenue, often cutting up at the NY NY Pizza joint. What a fun freaking bunch. You'll notice my username is inspired by Criss' spelling of his name. He and Rhoads were my all time favorite metal guitar influences, so thank you for this awesome tribute, I look forward to more, such as Legions, Summer's Rain & Strange Wings. However, I am a Bass Player first & foremost, but still Criss' guitar playing was love at first sound. The guy was incredible. But so is Steve Harris, Smith & Murray, Burton, Squire, Clayton & many more. Still Criss Oliva stands out on his own. Legendary.
Saw them live at London marquee about 1991 ish Jon Oliva stood on my hand on the monitor noticed said sorry and shook my hand, at the end of the song he gave me Dr kill drums stick. Still have the drum stick today, they were amazing
This song is why I love symphonic metal. When I first heard it as a senior in high school, I was taking music theory classes and was so blown away by the metal sound with classical movements. Of course, I had heard Randy's playing and loved his classical sound, but this whole song was composed like a classical piece. It was life changing for me.
Sweet Christmas! we got some Savatage on Licks of the Beast!! Got to see this song performed live by Jon Oliva back in 2014 i think it was, it was pure amazing madness
That was friggin spot on excellent I'm so glad you picked savatage and criss oliva they were so awesome i saw them like the 3 or 4 time's they came out to seattle and loved every show , i even got to talk to them all and get the back of my hall of the mountain king photocopy cover paper signed by them all except for the bass player johnny i couldn't find him to sign it ! Great bunch of guy's very nice too and with jon olivas voice and piano and criss olivas guitar and Steve wacholz drums and johnny lee Middleton on bass , they made a bunch of great albums , the dungeons are calling , sirens , power of the night , hall of the mountain king , gutter ballet , streets & lot's more like fight for the rock , but when jon oliva left that killed it for me and then when criss Oliva died i was devastated and without the two olivas it just wasn't savatage to me anymore at all whatsoever !!!
Thank you! You're lucky to have had the chance to meet them...sure sounds like a great bunch of guys and of course Criss was just a one-of-a-kind player and apparently a truly good dude!
Appropriate timing, seeing as Jon Oliva has said he wants the band to release one last record called Curtain Call. Never forget Criss and Paul, but also remember Jon is an incredible songwriter. Raise the fist of the metal child! 🤘
Such a masterpiece 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Savatage is one of my favorite bands of all time 💪🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 saw them live at the wake of Magellan tour….. it was unbelievable, I was 20 and the best concert till then and for a long time 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Metal on Chris🤘🏻
What a treat to wake up to this morning. Epic song and epic cover of it. Criss Oliva was a beast of a guitarist. Like I commented on your other Savatage cover, I’m old enough to remember when Power of the Night was released and it blew me away. I have learned and covered a few of their songs back in the day. Hands don’t work that well any more to play that fast, but still love to listen to them. Thank you for this treat.
@@LicksOfTheBeast oh I do. I write more melodic instrumental rock songs that have a little bit of shred in them, but nothing like I used to do. I’m 55 and grew up as a teenager in the 80’s and cut my teeth on Van Halen, Ratt, Dokken, Scorpions, Ozzy, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, etc. All the stuff on the radio then. I was messing around with guitar around then but about 1987 or 88 I heard Savatage Hall of the Mountain King and that ruined me. I fell in love with Criss’s classical style of playing and his fast runs and Michael’s raspy gutteral vocals and my tastes changed forever. I stopped listening to radio hair rock so much and started listening to and playing harder heavy metal music like Savatage, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Yngwie, etc. I got pretty good and could play pretty fast and played in a few bands but never went anywhere. So for the last 10 years or so I’ve mellowed out and listen to and play a lot of melodic instrumental rock and metal music. Artists like Stel Andre, Ivan Salerno, Alex K, Abim Finger, Masseo Asato (sp), and others I’m forgetting at 1:30 am right now in the western US. Anyway, sorry for the book here, I was bored and couldn’t sleep (insomnia). Love your channel. Love that you’ve added more than just Maiden licks, although they are one of the very best ever. And thanks for the Savatage bones you’ve been throwing us. So yes I still play despite my carpal tunnel and thumb tendinitis setting in. I always will at some level. You’re inspiring me to try and play some of the of old classic 80’s and 90’s metal songs again. Hey, what’s your 2 cents on those old hair metal bands from the 80’s? Did you and do you listen to and play any of it? Just curious. Take care
This was the first Savatage song that I heard & was hooked after that, was ecstatic to see you covering this, knowing someone of your caliber whom I look forward to performing this song & hopefully many more of their material, much mahalo !
It changed many lives including mine. This is pure art. There isnt a day which i dont think about what we could hear if he were with us now.Good job and thx btw, keep the spirit alive!
I remember having heard Savatage prior to this song and album coming out, and thinking they were pretty good, but they definitely leveled up with this effort. What really caught my attention about this song, in particular, was that it showed their 1970s-progressive side. The whole vibe of the song and the arrangement is very reminiscent of something I might have expected from Kansas a decade before Gutter Ballet came out. Criss was absolutely on fire the entire disc! So sad that his life got cut short. He rarely even gets mentioned in "Most Underrated" conversations, but certainly is worthy.
Yes, very nice cover! Nice to hear some of Criss Oliva's madness again. He and Adrian are my favourit guitarists. Especially Criss' melodic shredding is just one of a kind while Adrian is rocking the metal out of the blues like no one else is.
I love this so much - it's great to hear an "amped" up rendition of this song. As I've often remarked (on other RUclips song links): "Best sound on RUclips". Loving the new "direction" of your page; thank you so much for all that you do.
About 16 years ago I was convalescing at home from a bad motorbike crash with only Planet Rock to listen to. After several requests for them to play Hounds by Savatage and a complete lack of acknowledgement, I changed to a different radio station and never listened to Planet Rock again. Planet Rock, call yourself a rock station?
Awesome! And, nice Randy Rhoads poster in the wall. They're (adding Zakk Wylde and a bit of Alex Skolnick and Chris Caffery) mine most top influences... 😇
Savatage. Probably the most criminally underrated metal band in the world in my opinion . A band that should have been up there with legends like Maiden and Priest.. So much potential and such an amazing body of work..just got unlucky
Totally agree ❤
Agree
Because they don’t have any hit songs which have been known to the world
Damn right they were, absolutely one of the best bands
I couldn't agree more
Savatage were one of those bands that when you had to hear them, nothing else would do until you got it out of your system. That album Power of the Night and Sirens totally blew me away 👍👍👍
good work!!! savatage is probably one of the most underrated band in the world...thanks to bring it to the channel!
Thank you so much! They really do deserve to be acknowledged a little more for their impact and influence...and for their awesome music!
Oh. How I love when I see people aknowledging Cris Oliva. Such underated musician and true talent. My favourite guitarist. Pls make more solos. Mentaly yours, he carves his stone, lights out etc
Don't forget the song Hounds! What a pair of powerful solos!
My band opened for Savatage twice at the Living Room Prov RI. Alabama Slammers were all we drank.
Criss and the boyz meant everything to us. This time in my life is something few can imagine. But imagine crazy, then amplify that... And you get close.

Amazing! I'm sure you'll never forget that experience!
And thank you very much 🙏
R.I.P. Chris 🎸🎸🎸
Hell yess!!! This album changed my life along with Streets. Oliva....Rip my hero
Criss Oliva was a virtuoso and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Great cover. Bravo
He has a permanent place in my metal heart since I first heard "the dungeons are calling".
@@oststadtseuche it was the Hounds in my case
Savatage was such an awesome band, way way underrated
An incredible band that has an almost flawless catalog in my opinion.
All Chris Oliva's solos were so tasteful and well executed.. Well Played Dude.. Well Played.
Savatage is my secret treasure since 1993 when I heard Streets (in Cassette).
Nice to see and hear from you about them.
I absolutely love all the Maiden stuff that you do , and have to say it was a breath of fresh air and great memories to hear the Savatage …beautiful work , precise to a tee .
Would not hurt my feelings to see you cover Hall of the Mountain King 🤘
That really means a lot to me. Thank you!!
Stamp of approval from Pinellas County, FL.
It's an honour 🙏🙏🤘🤘

Gutter Ballot and Edge of Thorns are my fav songs with Criss. The guitars by Chris and Al on dead winter dead record are top-notch.
Just as good today as it was when it was released. Criss was an amazing player taken from us far too early and it is a shame that most people never even knew who Savatage were. I still don't know how he found those to be "smooth". I tried a few metal picks and absolutely hated the feel 😅
George Lynch used them back in the 80s. I tried a few when i was first starting out and i couldn't make them work for SHIT.
Mick mars, demartini and Phil Colleen use them. Evh too, I believe did as well. He blamed his tongue cancer on steel picks
Steve Clark gave me one
Criss Oliva is probably the most underrated guitar player ever.
Please bring more Savatage. By far my favorite band! And this was awesome!!
I agree.....please bless us with more Savatage! 🙏🤘🎸🎶

Savatage. Been a while since I last listened to them.
Seen them 2 times.
Good memories.
Nice, but Edge of Thorns... so beautiful !!!
Criss was a genious.
Love this song!
Very nice work, you play well and it sounds nice!
Beautiful introduction❤
Good work!!
Masterpiece!!
The fact that this song is drop tuned and I'm just now learning this over 30 years later is killing me.
that got me too lol
Great job dude, you showed respect to only one of the greatest musicians to grace metal! The Oliva’s and Savatage! 🤘
Thank you so much!

Phenomenal group with and without Zakk
I love the song called hall of the mountain king.
Fantastic guitar tone! And great playing as usual.
Good job Nico I'm sure Chris approves this tribute from the other side
That's super nice of you. Thanks so much!! 🤜🤛

Hounds is probably my favorite Savatage song.
NAILED IT!!! Great job and thank you.
This is awesome! Thanks for the performance
Awesome!
And, nice Randy Rhoads poster in the wall.
They're (adding Zakk Wylde and a bit of Alex Skolnick and Chris Caffery) mine most top influences...
😇
Beautiful! Thanks for paying tribute to one of the best of all time!!!
Thank YOU for watching and for the encouragement!
Perfect!
Excellent!
Criss Oliva: GUITAR MASTERCLASS. RIP
Have watched a lot of your video's but this Maidenite would say, Ghost in the Ruins is the best guitar solo ever!
That's definitely a great song
Awesome!! Very nice!
Hermoso tributo! Felicitaciones!
YEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Amazing song. I love Savatage.
Excellent playing sounds great 🤟
Nico, amazing. When I hear savatage, it’s clear where the trans Siberian orchestra came from.
Excellent cover. A lot maidens modified licks, they sound familiar because of melodic rock lines used by many bands of that time.
If you like this, look up their catalog! They're great!
I love this band and this cover!🤩🙌🤘
Criss Oliva is a very Master of heavy metal guitar.
Amazing tribute 🤘
Love it!
Love this so so much
nice :-) great song, and i noticed a couple of details i hadn't noticed before - thanks
Love that!! Thank you for watching 🙂
Beautiful
Great great song,
Good Hard Rock Song
Respect!!!
Album MAGNIFICO!!! Summer's rain poi e' una canzone a cui sono legato particolarmente perche' sembra descrivere un brutto periodo della mia vita.....
Epic. Just as the original.
masterpiece
one of the best songs that is. Well done :D
