I spent 8 years off grid in the wilderness in the up'mich!!! ended up with three different Parcels of land I bought cheap from the loggers I miss the wilderness I miss building I miss being constructive I did it for years homesteaded in the wild from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan Wisconsin and down to Arkansas Ozarks it was a wild lifestyle😊 I even HAULD MY painted jackass by the name of Billy Jack all the way to the up with the rest of my tools supplies and hunting equipment ,, I used him for riding the logging roads and scouting!😮 it's amazing what I accomplished and did having a broken back and very little money

Dan It would be awesome to see you guys tackle the seney swamp. Its just a massive swamp the size of the whole detroit metro area and its in the center of the u.p. it has thousands of swamp/marsh islands and I would bet that there are bucks in there that have never seen people. If you look at it from onx and zoom in everywhere there are deer trails coming and going from island to island. Its right up your alley.
Those wolves must make the deer absolutely miserable

I hunt in Iron County. This season, my trail cams on 80 acres, 76 wolves and 6 deer. No bucks. I have hunted that area for 20 years. By far the worst I have ever seen with deer numbers. Wolves have destroyed the hunting in this area. Thanks for the video, I hope this brings awareness to the problem. Merry Christmas Dan and Hunting beast crew!

Years ago I hunted Crystal Fall fer Bear and wuz successful however even back then we got tons of cam pics of Wolves! We wuz havin breakfast and overheard some locals sayin they GUT SHOOT EVERY Wolf they see that way they runnoff a long ways and die, no bullet to trace and no way to get caught, ya'all need to start doin more of that for the Deers sake and to enable ya'all to finally start seein Deer again!
Hunted western Iron county for 30+ years. Wolves have ruined hunting up there. Nothing like it used to be.
I am positive that hunting was better before the wolves, but historically speaking, big woods hunting has always been really difficult at best because of low deer densities. It is really to hard have good deer density because of low percentage of farms per square mile.
Are the wolves protected?
Some of my old stomping grounds. I love hunting the big woods even when I get skunked, which is usually the case.
I prefer what you’re about Dan. I don’t need to see a bunch of deer or a kill every time I tune in. I want to see reality. I want to see the true grind of deer hunting.

I absolutely love the way you break down your hunts in explaining all the details along with the sketches of the land layout.
Especially picking the right tree or as you put it “the art of the set up” this is something I’ve learned the hard way in my second year of bow hunting public. I’ve gotten good at getting on deer but man I stink at picking the right tree, I’ve either had deer coming out right under me or to far away. Here lately instead of target panic I get tree selection panic when I get to my spot 😂.

I hunt in South West Nova Scotia . What we call back country , as much as back country gets , for this little strip of a province . Same kind of big woods , same difficulties , same remoteness from hunters , same , same , same . It is so hard to get on them , and get yourself where they're at , at the time they're there . When Eric hears the crash on the last hunt , at dark , and is contemplating what he would do to just get another chance ... Is so familiar lol . But those missed opportunities are really a huge success in that kind of country . Awesome video guys . Dan , your content is second to none . Keep it coming . Cheers , Merry Christmas guys

I’ve been bow hunting Baraga county, about an hour north of you the last two seasons. Deer density is low but I’ve been able to connect the dots on some yooper giants (in large part thanks to your public Wisconsin series) and was able to lay eyes on what was easily a 130-140 class buck at 75 yards with about six more 90-115 class bucks on cam regularly. sadly no arrow connection yet. You guys are spot on about the north woods. In other places where deer walk a mile, they walk three here, and they are moving almost all day. The U.P may very well be the most remote place west of the Mississippi. It’s special being able to see wolves,moose, Martin while not hearing another human made sound and chasing the rarest animal here… the buck. (Find the pines, find the deer). Hopefully, I get to wrap up 2024 with watching dan holding the rack of a yooper swamp buck. Thanks for covering my backyard!

Dan, you just explained what I love most about hunting the U.P. It is about the adventure. I very rarely bump into another bowhunter. Most guys bait and do not venture far from the roads. Merry Christmas and have a gret New Year!!
That UP is a beast in itself. I hunt federal forest in Schoolcraft County and there seems to be a decent population of deer there and our group has hunted this area for over 40 years and this year we found around a dozen trail cams that were clearly marked as dnr owned and they were all on two tracks not hidden at all and we asked a local game warden what the reason was and he said to monitor the wolves migration patterns. We only had one wolf picture this year out of dozen of cameras and thousands of pictures but I have a feeling that their coming our way. That is some wild territory up there and it's definitely God's country in every word and that's why I love hunting there. Glad to see the beast crew came up again this year. I'd like to see how you guys look at and read on x maps sometime. I know nothing beats boots on the ground but I'd like to see what you see in the different colors of green vegetation and learn how to see theys features threw someone's else's experienced eyes. Be safe out there fellas.
I like that crunch rate thought process. First year compound hunting and my crunch rate is zero on public bc I haven't got myself in the correct position to get a shot so I can learn from that and get better at putting myself in position.

I'm going to give you a tip in case you don't know? for bow hunting the Upper Peninsula of Michigan... that land is covered with wild apple orchards in the National Forest off the dirt roads and highways from the olden days!!!! it's a deer and bear magnet:-) also makes good pies😅 those Yoopers would call us from Wisconsin Apple Pickers!!! and they didn't mean it in a good way😅 it's true,, I love apples for free and they make good deer bait😊 as you know. okay be safe, Mark here down in southern Missouri Ozarks.😊 I think it's Christmas morning I'm going to make me some coffee
I was 7 yards off from a perfect set up in the PA firearm season. Due to the topography of the land and my low treestand height, the deer were effectively screened from my sight. During two separate hunts I experienced three deer come toward my ambush point and bed down tight. After about 30 minutes one of the deer saw me and bounded off, a, second deer eventually caught my wind and saundered off, and a third deer silently slinked away like a fur covered slinky.
I'm just re-iterating what Dan said about the fine art of EXACT stand placement. I know from experience as although there were three deer bedded within 25 yards of my location, I could see none of them. Those deer might well have been 3000 yards from me.
However, Pennsylvania's late season starts tomorrow, so those sneaky deer will have me to deal with in my new improved stand location.

Merry Christmas guys. Them cedar thickets are like thermal hubs. So dense that the wind and thermals swirl constantly. It’s perfect bedding for them for this reason. I found hunting it on really windy days is the only way. Glad you made it back to Gods country.

Wolves are everywhere up here but not only the Wolves but there's lots of cougar sitings I've seen em a few times myself and then you got coyotes.... I think they all are dwindling our deer heard badly not to mention the long hard winters....it would definitely help if we could manage the Wolves that'd be a start 👍

I call it close quarters combat with deer here in the bigwoods. Sometimes you can't find a good tree you were hunting about 1 hour from where I live lol.
This is just my opinion if I lived in big woods country and I didn't have any better options. I would my style drastically and focus on groundhunting 70% spot and stalk, ambush and 30% hang and hunt with beast stand or saddle(you should hunt like a wolf and cover as land as possible ). The obvious reason is because of such low deer density and have to cover endless timberland. You have adjust your style for the habitat your hunting. I believe Jared Scheffler ( adrenaline whitetails )hunting style would be better for hunting big Timber from , but on the downside spot and stalk hunting is a lot more difficult to learn. The other option is just spending a lot of money on trail cameras, which is really expensive for the average hunter earning under $100,000 with a family. I would also use lightweight deer decoys that fold up and put in your backpack. For the record I am a big fan of Dan Infalt. I have most of his dvds

Welcome to trying to hunt in wolf county. Come up to Itasca County in Minnesota, we have 10 times more wolves then Michigan and we have the lowest deer numbers since I started hunting in 1982.
Engineer a one stick that’s basically a stand - just have to be able to climb up - some flat on top then a 45* angle with the bottom just straight foot rest- 20” post for sitting, would be a seller

Those are big wolf tracks. There are some big wolves around here and further North especially. One time I saw a wolf up North and sitting in my van he was almost looking me straight in the eye. A big male wolf stands almost as tall as an average size grizzly sow.
I never hunted big woods, but I lisnted to a lot of podcasts, and the people who are successful are using between 25 to 50 trail cameras and that is being really conservative. If you want to be successful in big woods country , you have to put in a lot more hours for scouting compared to farm country hill country Marsh and swamps. For the average bowhunter, it's not realistic because of the time and money, just my opinion. If hypothetically, big woods would even have average deer per square mile and average bucks per square mile, it would be awesome hunting. To be able to hunt public land with very few hunters around you would be incredible. Especially listening to wolves at night would be a great experience.
You don't need all that tech. Hardly bother with cameras at all. Just put in miles and miles of scouring each year. Manage to havest a nice buck more often than not.
@wetfoot7782 I agree with you. I listened to several podcasts about hunting big woods habitat, and they all said using between 20 to 40 trail cameras. I am not saying it's the only way.
Please also bear in mind, I'm hunting the U.P. We have a much longer winter here and deer numbers are not good unless you find small pockets that are higher based on food sources. I don't enjoy rifle so much and because of work and family comitments get around 15 hunts a year. I spend most weekends during winter and into spring scouting. I stockpile buck bedding areas and hunt the ones with the best potential in the fall. Once hunting begins, I scout my way to a spot and may or may not get there based on current sign. Some days I might fo 5 or 6 miles and never set up. The process starts again as soon as rifle season ends.
@wetfoot7782 I have a lot of respect for you and your dedication. I will be honest with you, I really don't know if I could really enjoy that hunting situation with very few deer. I KNOW BIG WOODS HUNTERS SCOUTS lot of miles

One last comment. This year the water temperature has been higher then the air temperature in some areas. Just something to keepin mind with thermals the air being 39 degrees and the water being like a 45 or 50 degree definitely plays a roll in scent beng pushed from the bodys of water. Just somthing to keepin mind when hunting these warmwr winters. We all know deer will move whentenos drop butnif hasnt been consistent enough to make the water temp consistent then that warm water will trump a 6 mph wind i found you need a steady 7 to 10 mph wind to combat the water thernal pushing into the land.
I thought Eric would have tested the thermals with his milkweed...maybe he forgot to bring it.

For a big woods hunt hit the wilds of Maine, or New Yorks Adirondacks next year. And no wolves either.
Down state in lower peninsula I found 3 bucks left in the woods with good shots on them with just antlers cut off of them. I’m making it my personal duty to remove this problem.

That's the problem with hunting the big woods, the Wind is constantly swirling. Sometimes, it's just too hard to set up for the wind.

Weather conditions may have had them in there more last year. Compared to this year with no snow. They obviously use those cedar swamps for thermal cover. Not much food available most browse lines are too high.
To erics remark about being in an area that feels like noones been before. I hunt a tlthin strip of 6000 or so scres where the furthest psrt away from paring in aout 1 mile where separated by a river, the black river. I can for sure say there are areas that ni man has placed foot. I have found big chunks of petrified wood on bluffs, which is why I'm confident no one has stepped there 1 being a bluff and hard to scale and 2 the pile of petrified wood that was stillthere

The problem is that it's not so very often the Wolf gets lucky. They get lucky a lot and are killing off the deer population.
My dad went to school in the U.P back I the 70s. There was tons and tons of deer and actually a few big bucks. His dorm roommate got a giant 12 point with his Buick continental

I know that can't be true, but there probably is some truth to it and also some truth to there being way less hunters heading up there these days.
Agreed brother. I hear from everyone that there aren't deer up there, I went up there and saw more deer than I do around Detroit 😂 I literally pulled my truck over at night and slept on highway 2 after almost slamming into 5 different deer. I have never had to do that down here.
Eric, what carrying straps are you using for the beast stand? Been trying to find something better than what I am using and not having much luck
I hunt AL which is about 800 miles south of the UP give or take. Finding a shooter here is about as tough as any state but the videos I’ve seen in the UP are different. Anywhere else we are trying to find where nobody else is and maybe there’s deer sign. Up there seems like nobody is there not even deer.
If you were just in michigan you shoulda came on down to the thumb i think youd smoke a nice 3 or 4 year old basket rack. I seen a few 10 points thisbyear and even about 140" deer but never could quite get to him eith the pressure

It depends where Im hunting. In Wisconsin around my home, its not to often I jump does in these spots, but when I hunted Iowa in a larger population and a hilley terrain this year, about 25% of the time I jumped does going in. Maybe more. But most of the time jumping a doe don't end the hunt, I have jumped does many times and still shot good bucks out of the buck bedding. The worst is if they blow over and over.
They haven’t headed to yards yet, no snow, they’re still all spread out.

I went to the up, this fall and i coudnt believe the lack of wild life, not only deer but evething. Didnt even see a bird barely, squirrel, rabbits? It was like the apocalypse lol.
