Melee or unarmed without VATS really isn't very fun indeed. I learned that the hard way. Now with VATS, melee is honestly extremely good, even kinda broken with weapons like Atom's Judgement.
NPCs being able to block all damage regardless of magnitude is pretty dumb and the worst part of melee. VATS circumvents this entirely so it’s the obvious choice. Unfortunately, I don’t see much more depth than use/don’t use VATS though.
@poormansproductions2402 the biggest saving grace for most Melee builds is that the super sledge has the stun pack. A beautiful gift from Todd's forhead
Somehow I find melee slightly easier to work than unarmed. Maybe it's the reach, or speed, but with melee weapons I can sometimes manage to time it so that I can start a swing and move in so it lands while they're trying to hit me. Punching, though, just so frustrating. What's worse is that the Iron Fist perks give you some reason to try to power attack... which you *can't* do in VATS. And power attacks are slow, and almost always get blocked.

Vats is so boring though. No special moves (that I know of) like uppercuts.

Fallout 4's unarmed is Todd's punishment for those Robbaz videos.
He forgot the unarmed badass was played on adept and adopted draconian measures as a result.

There’s no reason to pick unarmed over melee other than the memes as the latter seems to be superior in every conceivable way.
I remember ass aultrons being fun to fight with melee cause you had to dodge their attacks first and then punish

Next time if you wanna unarmed, bring 9 Endurance
15 endurance with 2 mk 4 ballistic weaves here, you’re just not supposed to take the laser on the chin
