This artist means SO much to the people who listen to him. Sometimes in life we hit anhedonia, and all the music stops working, and the movies don't hold our attention, and the books just feel like dry leaves. Then you for some reason come across a song by Damian, and finally something reaches you and it sounds like it's in the next room, just like how you feel. It pulls you back a little.

For anyone interested, I recorded him playing an acoustic fragment of "on a green" (track included in this album where appears "I can't say goodbye") when we went to my past job for pizza time. Appears as a reel on my channel.
We, him and his gf hanged around the whole day.

Sadness is a pretty new discovery for me, but I have been listening to his work a lot
It brings a certain kind of melancholy that I haven't found anywhere else
There is just such a bright sound surrounded in the darkness of all his work that I can't get enough of.

Sadness is my favorite band since 2018, and this song in particular is one of my favorites. I'm shocked to know that someone recommended this. Each sadness album has his own identity, and i recommend everyone to listen to the 2015-2019 albums. It's just incomparable masterpieces, but in order to appreciate sadness songs, you need to deconstruct a lot of things, because at the same time sadness looks like something we know, it doesn't.

    Hi Bryan! Andreas here!
Thank you for checking my suggestion out. It was very interesting hearing your thoughts on this track and how you perceived it. Sadness plays and blends so many styles throughout his discography from DSBM to Emo to Post-Rock and even Power Pop so it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what's going on at times and pretty much all of his releases have a different approach towards the production. But yes I do get that "sad happy" feeling that you mentioned from this song, I truly love that sorrowful sound but with a glimpse of hope or what to call it.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the extended outro. To me that part kinda symbolizes when you really hold on to something and you make one final desperate attempt to not lose it before finally letting go. From a strictly objective standpoint I agree with you that it might have been better to just have that first fade out be the end of it, but with how it makes me feel personally and how I read into it I think it works.
I thought it was funny how you pointed out all the things I also hear in this track but compared to me you didn't really care for them haha. To me this song is like one big build up almost. I can't really explain it, it just feels like every section is where it should be and leads you into the next so effortlessly and it doesn't sound forced. The wall of sound just adds to the overall feel since to me the whole song is like a wall of emotions coming at you and it kinda reflects that. Yes the melodies are somewhat subtle at times but they're there, and combined with the thick atmosphere they create that sad happy sound which makes the song a bit more open to interpretation instead of telling you outright how it should make you feel.
I do believe some music is best experienced when simply listened to and just "felt in the moment" and not necessarily analyzed too much. In hindsight maybe that's the case with Sadness, or at least this track. There are songs that mean the world to me but if I'm not in the right mood or whatever I don't appreciate them as much. I just know that I've loved this song since the first time I heard it and have continued to do so after having tried to look at it through a critical perspective as well through the years. But that's the beauty of music, it hits us all differently.
Thanks again for the video man, keep it up and best of luck to you and your channel!

Completely agree that some music works best when listened to casually. Most of my favorite albums are musically simple but mean so much to me regardless. Highly compressed music isn't my usual sound and that's definitely going to influence a first listen too.
Thanks for the request though. This was a wild ride and I came to appreciate it more with each passing minute of the analysis.

Sadness, and all of Damian's projects (Trhä, life, Kaskaskia) are my most recent obsession. The lofi production is abrasive at first, but it grows on you the more you listen to it. It just provides a really unique and compelling atmosphere. While a lot of fans are attached to Sadness' earlier work, I think you might enjoy some of their most recent tracks (I personally have been really into 'encuentrame' and 'lowsun in a glistening,' both released this year). The production is a little less abrasive and the songwriting is a little more purposeful, even if the tracks are still really long and sprawling.

32:20 Fun fact, the guy behind this project actually has an emo project too (he's a pretty unique individual, has near 20 projects in total including black metal ones, dsbm, emo, shoegaze, ambient music, even synth stuff...). It's called life, there are numerous demos of it on spotify and it's what you seemed to describe.

I discovered this music about a week ago and I've been listening to several sadness albums obsessively. There's something very deliberate to everything, including that washed out production.
In this particular track, that build up with the palm muted guitar at the end is something really special. It feels like it's building to a big powerful resolution and we get that.... But there's something subtly sour and off about that final chord..... It feels like finally achieving something you've worked for so hard and so long... Only to discover you don't really want it anymore

Watching this, I wandered towards another video/ song recommended by @FishDish73... I was loving the music until the 'black' elements started... I read the reactions and saw a terribly sad message by @oldshitty - This is always my go to. I’ve been on this earth for 38 years and almost every second has been pain. I forgot how to feel anything but when I listen to this project I kind of remember what it’s like to not be dead inside. Curious I see she is a creator and wander to her (Emily Aideen) own 'music', largely noise... Well is seems Emily decided to leave this mortal coil.. Sad! Her page was full of messages to rest in piece. I wonder if the music you choose also determines in part your mental state? I loved this music, but it influenced me somewhat negatively.
Whatever, please take care of yourselves , and if you are suffering please speak to someone. You have friends and you have worth!

Definitely shoegaze here. I loved the overwhelming emotiveness of it, but I agree with you that it's not a 15-minute song: I think it would've been far better at around 1/2 to 2/3 of that. Production is fascinating though, and I think I would've been more enthusiastic if it didn't so overuse elements like the distorted kick drum, and especially when it goes into the fast double-kick section it's just too much for too long, and after it hits that climax it doesn't really find its footing again. Despite all this it still has me interested in the band, because craftsmanship can be learned, but knowing how to evoke emotion through production and style is artistic talent.

some people just make stuff nonstop. mac demarco just dropped a 200 song album. some of it is not great for sure. this guy probably just puts out most of the songs he makes, rather than cherry pick the best ones to put into an album. kinda interesting, it is like peeking into someone’s diary almost. that being said… this is not his best work in my opinion haha

    • @_bats_
      @_bats_ Год назад

@@sommelierofstench right. I'm not gonna be someone's editor for them as a listener, though. Every single project I've listened to where someone has multiple album releases per year often across multiple different band names, the music has been obviously lacking in some way. That might be extremely generic riffs, simplistic and repetitive songwriting, or padding out albums by having songs with one or two ideas with sections that are copy-pasted to increase running time to genre standards. There's too much good music in the world for me to waste time finding out if there are one or two cool riffs on the 9th album Rogga Johansson has put out this month.
Learning a little self-editing is an important part of being an artist.
