Disney's Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Was Spectacular

  • In September 2023, I took a voyage upon the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser. Ever since, I've struggled to articulate what it was. This is my attempt to do so. It was so much more than a "Star Wars Hotel." It was an incredible, immersive experience, the first time I've ever LARPed, and the best RPG I’ve ever played. Like D&D come to life.
From thrilling heists to emotional moments of friendship, adventure, and love, the Starcruiser wasn’t just about Star Wars-it was about the power of storytelling, the relationships we build, the lessons we carry with us, and what it means to say goodbye to something so special.
"You never forget your first ship. And this one is special."
Let's hope one day the Halcyon returns.

Hey everyone! I'm pinning this comment to let you know that a small team is creating a full-length documentary on the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser called Halcyon Daze. I begged my parents for the Starcruiser as my high school graduation trip. They were extremely hesitant. My dad loves Star Wars and DnD but not so much LARPing. Same goes for my oldest brother. My other brother and my mom weren't huge fans of either. But they caved. My brothers spent the months leading up to it trying to argue how this price point could not possibly be worth it.
All 5 of us had a phenomenal time. My skeptic brother got singled out by Raithe day one and I practically never saw him the whole voyage lol. My biggest regret is that we hadn't really come up with characters beforehand, but when asked where we were from by our waitress, my brother led the charge and improved a backstory for himself. We all quickly followed suit and we maintained those characters, even my mom who seemed the least enthusiastic.
I can read Aurebesh. Been able to since before even Galaxy's Edge. There were so many hidden details all over the ship, smaller stories that didn't mean much but could only be caught by a keen eye. It even helped me on the first puzzle when you first tap your M-band on one of the consoles. It shows you 4 Aurebesh symbols. After getting the password incorrect, Raithe is supposed to message you with the right one. I never got that message. I saw the symbols were A, C, L, and S, and correctly figured the order-- CSLA: Chandrila Star Line - Admin
The conversations I had with the cast members, from the actors to the blue shirts, were incredible. They were baffled by my teddy bear, couldn't figure out what species he was. My mom tried to explain that he was distantly related to Ewoks. When the cast still seemed confused, I said bears and ewoks were related the way tookas and loth-cats were and his eyes lit up in understanding. No one in my family had understood what I'd just said, but the Halcyon crew did.
I really wish I could've justified doing this twice. I had no idea there were so many storylines. I would've explored more.
I don't think anything about the Starcruiser can be understated. Thank you for making this video!

Your story is absolutely captivating and thorough. I love the examples you gave as to the level of immersion, like how the Blue Crew immediately understood the tooka/loth-cat analogy. (I had no idea what a tooka was and had to look it up, lol.) I learned Aurebesh specifically for our cruise and agree that there were so many details to discover... (Like the Halcyon Fluke.) And I enjoyed the Easter Egg connections between Galaxys Edge and the Starcruiser. (The help wanted poster at Olgas for a ship mechanic fluent in Shyriiwook... "Mubo" from Droid Depot being one of the passwords for a mission involving saving SK... Hacking the Ronto Roaster engine in the datapad and having it turn off in real life...) I'm so happy that you all had a great time, and thank you for sharing your story! I really enjoyed reading it.

@@DoubleCritFail I think I have a three page word doc of miscellaneous thoughts from the trip so I wouldn't forget any of the smaller moments 😅 truly so much happened in such a short span of time that somehow didn't feel rushed
The fact that the crew loved Star Wars as much as the rest of the passengers, if not more, was incredible and led to so many authentic experiences. The Galaxy's Edge crew has many people who have never seen the movies and only know the scripts they were taught and you can tell. The fact that you got to sit down with the characters and just talk about the events of the galaxy is so cool

My family loves LARP, games, and StarWars... and I have been LARPing for more than 30 years. **I want all of you who were new to LARP to know**
If you were new to this?
    1. you did great, and
    2. This was the best LARP experience of my life, and you should be happy you did it, even if it was your first or only.
Thanks DCF for your loving recap.
My favorite part about it is that it illustrated how complex, interwoven, and individual the experience was... but also how much of MY (and everyone's) GSC story, and yours - are shared between us.
If you TRULY missed it, I am sorry. There were so many voices yelling in your ear, telling you how terrible/expensive it was... and those voices made $$ off of the clicks intended to scare you away, and confirm that you were right to do nothing.
Please don't listen to those voices. Follow the voice of adventure, and uplifting voices.
Yes, I'm sorry no one could tell you that this was the answer to the question: How much would you be willing to pay to have the best adventure/experience of your life?
But if you make your voices heard... The Halcyon is out there somewhere. The Director and everyone involved KNOWS HOW THEY DID IT... they know what works now.
They will probably make a Star Wars Hotel... for people to just do boring stuff in...
But someday... you will be able to catch a shuttle up to the Halcyon... and when that day comes...
    do not hesitate.
This was the Highest Rated Customer Experience in Disney's History...
we only have to ask them... together as one... and it will return.

In the quiet moments after the re-capturing of the jewel, Gaia found my wife (an archeologist, and the person Raithe magic-passed the gem to)... and shared...
a performance of one on one.
Capitalism tells you that this is not a scalable experience...
but there are HUNDREDS who have similar 1on1 experiences with crew...
or that it happened to someone they were with...
so many that it boggles the mind.
If you missed it... don't let the haters win.
When the next turn of "updating" Batu happens for Disney... make sure they know that you want to go to the GSC.
Make sure you let them know that the haters will not keep you away.

Thank you for creating and sharing this. There are so many people that will sadly never understand exactly how profound this experience was.
My experience on Starcruiser was profoundly emotional not just because of how amazing Starcruiser was, but also because it was the weekend my mother in law passed away after having lived with us for a year battling cancer. She insisted that I take my son and have the best time ever and that she would see the videos when we got home. That was July 22, 2023. She passed early morning on the 23rd.
I truly feel like she was with us in spirit. My son and I had planned to go Smuggler/Resistance, but ended up being guided by Saja Tycer through the entire spiritual force journey. It was the only path that felt right. And again that experience was more than I could have ever hoped for.
Over a year later my son still expresses his sadness in not being able to go back and “play Star Wars” again.
My wife and I attended Halcy-Con 2 weeks ago. There were many moments during the con, especially during the Saja Stories panel that were just amazingly profound. I’ve been to many conventions in my 45 years, but this one was the most memorable.
So sorry to ramble on but for the past year I haven’t really talked about any of this. And going back and sharing our stories with each other I think is just so helpful.
So again thank you for this. Tabu e tay!

I had never participated in any LARP experience before, and this totally blew me away. I also spent time with Saja Kyr and Raithe Kole, which was amazing! Members of my group were double agents for the Empire (turned triple agents for the Resistance when they became a little too infamous 😂), serial bribers (with 3D printed coins), and smugglers of Gaya's luggage. My wife and I took the cruise three times. The first time was on the 3rd voyage (we wanted to get in before spoilers hit), and weren't planning on going back for a few more years. Once they announced the closure, we pushed hard to get back on board, going through a travel agent and calling in the day reservations opened back up. After a couple of hours on the phone, my wife was able to get the cruise on the 20th (right after yours!) and to our surprise, the travel agent got a cruise set up on my birthday, on the 24th. We were torn on which one to take since it IS quite expensive, but my step daughter simply said: "this isn't coming around again. Do both." So we got on the phone with friends and got some folks together and we were able to work the costs down and made both voyages happen. It looks like the same Lt. Croy was on my last voyage (BTW: He was also our Sammy on our first voyage), and it was fun re-connecting with him. We got a "you look awfully FAMILIAR..." when he saw us again. All said, this video was a punch in the feels. We had several cast members who broke character and told us our voyages were the last for them with a tear in their eye. They soon shook it off, and were back in character and they all made the voyages memorable. The Starcruiser was the best attraction Disney has ever made. They poured the best into it, and it showed. I've made friends that I've kept in touch with over birthdays, holidays and especially over the yearly anniversary of the voyages. Thanks for documenting your time, may the stars light your way.

@@DoubleCritFail That's a big question. The GS was an amazing experience and one I am so glad I got to participate in, but I wouldn't consider it a larp, more like interactive theater with game-like elements. I find larp gives you more agency as a player, and while you can influence the starcuriser plot here and there, it is very on rails in a lot of ways. Again, I want to make it clear that the starcruiser was an incredible experience, but I'd think of it vs larp like a well written high production value choose your own adventure book with only one ending vs a homebrew sandbox rpg

@@SecretlyMikeYoung Got it! So in traditional LARP, the story is written as you go, and more collaborative between other LARPers? That makes sense. In my mind, it feels like the Starcruiser is like a D&D system setting, and the different storylines are like one-shot adventures contained within. It seems from what you've said like traditional LARP is way more open than that.

Her negative experience is the extreme minority among those of us who actually went, speaking to those who never went and were determined to hate it. Starcruiser reached the highest guest satisfaction ratings in the history of Walt Disney World, and consistently made absolute raving fans out of those of us who actually experienced it. It was a masterpiece.
Sadly (for reasons that will be debated forever), the business side didn't work out at scale. But the experience of it? Man. It's genuinely difficult for me to imagine it being exceeded.

I had my character’s story all played out: a normal joe from a nowhere planet called to adventure when he learns rumours of his mother’s past after her passing. He learns stories of how she escaped the Jedi purge on Coruscant and settled in her new life, that keys to her past might be found on a remote planet called Batuu. and so he embarks on a fated voyage that sees him connecting with the force with the help of the Saja and finding pieces of his mother’s very own lightsaber in the scrapyard of a salvager named Savi and an unscrupulous merchant named Dok Ondar 😜

Math check: $7800 / 4 people = $1950 per person (or $975 per person per night). How did you get 1500?
Did you get a discount that you didn't tell us about? However, if it was five people in one room, that would be $1560 per person or $780 per person per night
Additionally: DnD in a castle is for 4 nights not 2, and equals (and I booked a swanky room for 2) $1087.50 per person per night. Just about $100 more (or $300 more if you had 5 people in your room - which I am now thinking is more likely), plus I get a very nice suite with a king size bed and a hot tub (aaaand I don't have to go to Orlando).
All joking aside - I am genuinely curious as to how you arrived at your figures. Did you have five people in one of those little rooms? (I may have misheard)
P.S. I truly enjoyed seeing the Halcyon story as told through your eyes. Your point of view is delightful and your portrayal of all the cast members is a true homage to the hard work they did. (commented, liked and subscribed)

    • @DoubleCritFail
      @DoubleCritFail  8 дней назад +1

Hey hey! There were 5 of us in the room. Myself, my wife, and three friends. There were 2 bunk beds, a 2 person bed (the size of which I don't remember), and a bed that pulled out of the wall big enough for a single person. The biggest bottleneck was the bathroom, but we made it work. The rooms weren't huge, but we didn't feel like we were on top of each other.
Have you been to DnD in a castle? If so, I'm jealous! Thank you for your uplifting words. I'm glad I got to share what the experience was for those who didn't get a chance to go.
