I had a chance to sit down with the creative director of Dark Souls: Archthrones, artnobuddy. This ended up being a 2 ½ - 3 hour conversation about pretty much all of the largest obstacles and setbacks the team had to face prior to the demo’s release. We also talked about character design, storytelling, the visual philosophy of the mod, taking feedback, and other topics on how the team handled this project. Hope you guys enjoy.

Nice job coming up with actual questions instead of the generic "so how did you first get into modding" BS
Big props to creative lead of archthrones, for how visually appealing archthrones are, how designs fit and locations are set up (even if i personally dislike how sekiro bosses work in DS3)
But i still want to blow up balls of playetesters that left the beta damage/health/drops in state it is for demo
I hope on full release they can fix some of the balancing issues and maybe rework some of the bosses so they're less of just reskins from sekiro/ER bc the areas and stuff are awesome

I think something interesting you could do if Aldritch could eat you was making that a door into a realm like the Wolnir boss fight where you have to fight a miniboss of someone he has eaten like Gwyndolin

makes sense. Miyazaki's dark fantasy games have always used British accents. Only Sekiro stands out, due to being dubbed by Activision's team, IIRC.

It’s wild that Aldrich has the same skeleton as DS3 but without Gwyndolin because the fights are otherwise SO different

I finished the demo 6 times. 2 times before the patch too. REALLY love it. I do dislike some of the direction (in the demo) like lack of miracles or spells but besides that, I definitely can see this being better than ds3 itself.
And ds3 is my favorite souls game!
I have to say, it's amazing community projects like this that make me genuinely sad to be a console player. I've seen plenty of phenomenal mod projects for these games (and many others) in the past, but this one might take the cake, the creative vision behind Archthrones is stunning & the team clearly have the skills to bring it to fruition as well. This is seriously impressive stuff right here.
One thing that wasn't brought up in the interview, but I'm quite curious about: Have they managed to get any VO contributions from the many voice actors that are actually already in (at least one of) FromSoft's games? I know From have a history of hiring a lot of up-and-coming or niche VAs, at least some of which are aware of or even fans of their games already, so in theory it doesn't seem farfetched to think that a couple of them might have shown interest in contributing to such a project, or at least being within-budget for a community-funded project like this to reasonably be able to hire them, but I'm not very knowledgeable about the industry & whether any contract obligations might prevent such contributions from happening, so I have no idea if that would be possible or not to begin with.
I want to play this so badly, but I don't have a gaming computer; I have Dark Souls 3 on PS4.

Had a conversation with Nobuddy once where we both had a laugh since I'd offhandedly brought up how in a pretty big Dark Souls RP I'm in then I'd come up with the idea of Phoenix Knights a while back, and you know? They're a really nice person to talk to! Tbh one of my favorite mod devs
I think it's weird that anyone would be upset with reusing any kind of asset from other From games, when From soft does it all the time officially.

It’s nice to see that ds2 assets are being used, as well as velka not being a boss. Definitely helps with the points of contention that ds3 had with ds1 riding and limited color pallets.
If theirs anything I’ll to ask, it’ll be what’s the expected difficulty of the finished project? Like is it something’s between ds3-Er, sekiro-sotfs, or something between those two? Oh, and how’s poise going to work?
Difficulty is very hard to tell I imagine because Sekiro and DS2 for example are much easier than DS3 and ER for some, but for another person DS1 and Bloodborne are the hardest and ER is the new easiest

Luckily DS3 (and I assume this mod) doesn't require the best of the best, so if you can buy something second hand you can get a PC that can run this and other older games for the price of a console. Although if you're a nerd like me you'll probably want something more powerful

Ornstein is how the name is spelled. I'd get that correct, before worrying about how people with different accents pronounce words.

Yeah i added an e. English is not my native language and this is besides the point. My point is the americanization of names that have different origin which can get pretty annoying. The great composer Leonard Bernstein was extremely irritated because people in the US kept calling him "Bernsteen".

But hey, the way they handled that feedback just shows how the people working in this mod care about what they’re doing, and are open enough to all feedback to think how they can work that into their development, truly impressive

You should've asked why all of project_zy contributions to the mod were taken off without consulting him, that was quite of a shitty move that i don't understand, they didn't even tell him anything, the mod released and none of his musical work was in the game.

Easier to train amateurs to sound authentic to the game I guess if you don't have to train them in the accent.

@@egg0920 That's what From uses in its english releases. There's a general euro fantasy tone, they especially like Welsh stuff. It's just about not having a jarring american vocal fry voice pull you out of the setting. They are not paying people for this, so it's about getting quality work for the low price of nada
@@ActualLuxury most of the time fromsoft uses euro accent but not all of the time and i don't know why it matters all that much, but thank you for letting me know :D, also i feel like American/ Canadian accents are some of the best in medieval fantasy games euro ones are good but they don't hit the same way IMO
i was playing archthrones when vatti's character came up and started talking it pulled me right out of the setting so i can kinda see your point now lol not that's he's bad at voice acting or anything it just doesn't fit quite right with the game, but a lot of the voice acting in archthrones is really good but he's the only one to take away from the experience imo
Day 8 of asking Rusty to rank every enemy in Elden Ring. If you could rank all the weapons, the enemies should be no issue for you. Whether that'll be before or after the DLC comes out, that's your call.
It's nice having big mods like this one, but to be honest Elden Ring simply does the same in a better way. I hope at least the modding team had fun working on it, which is the most important aspect I guess.

As much as what unique art and environment visuals here are nice, I just don't understand why I'd want to play poorly balanced Dark Souls fanfiction when a million clone games already exist if I'm bored with the originals.

Getting paid for mods is illegal, report their patreon
It isn't illegal unless it infringes the game's copyright, So unless Fromsoftware or Bandai Namco come of their way to sue the mod creators, It's fine.
The only laws modding ever infringes upon are copyright and trademark. In both cases, the monetary aspects are simply one of multiple factors in the evaluation process that courts use to determine if infringement occurred, and it's established precedent that the monetary aspect cannot be given greater weight than any other; in fact, it's generally given LESS weight in copyright cases, because copyright protections were established to encourage artistic endeavors, not financial ones.
Further, actually selling a mod pushes the needle FAR more than mere Patreon support in terms of evaluating infringement. Payment for a product is a very cut-and-dry matter; however, Patreon support can be used for anything the account holder desires, and determining how much of that use infringes is a matter that even experienced lawyers and judges struggle with... No one wants a lengthy and expensive court case overturned on appeal because of accidentally factoring in something that is irrelevant to the case, and thus being forced to re-litigate the whole matter again.
Just sayin'.
As far as I know they aren't paywalling content so as long as they aren't doing Garden of Eyes shit it should be good
