In the Donner Cut, he says “Haven’t you ever heard of freedom of the press?” Literally everybody thinks that the care to step outside line is so much better.
It's shocking how alleged fans like Bryan Singer...and the *% they have doing his films now...have managed to capture...absolutely nothing of what Reeve brought to the role--nor have even tried to, really. But indeed, the man was practically superhuman in real life--he'd recovered 70% of sensation in his body and significant motor function after having his skull separated from his spine. THAT is not supposed to happen.

Did you ever see Chris Reeve in interviews? He was a genuine, caring, humble guy. Like he was angel sent from heaven or something. He always seemed so... good and righteous and caring about everybody... a Superman.
I am General Zod. Your ruler. Yes, today begins a new order. Your lands, your possessions, your very lives, will gladly be given in tribute to me, General Zod! In return for your obedience you will enjoy my generous protection. In other words you will be allowed to live.
Actually.. not anymore. Thanks to Avengers 1/Man of Steel, huge battles are now held in remote locations and/or all of the public has been conveniently evacuated in advance, so that they don't have to get sidelined with civilian casualties anymore (stories from Civil War and MoS-DoJ)
I love how everyone in Metropolis is just watching the fight cheering Superman on, in spite of the obvious dangers. I also love how even though they did a lot property damage, they didn't level the whole god damned city!
I know his Superman will keep inspiring people of all ages…his moral example of justice and kindness even when the chips are down, never give up. There’s always a way, there’s always hope, and always care for your fellow human beings.
One of the small complaints I have with Christopher’s Superman movies: they don’t do enough with Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen together. Two totally opposite characters and could easily have shown how dark/dangerous Lex is.
I remember it felt fantastic to see Superman finally take them on after so much despair with these three nightmares turn up just as he relinquished his powers. We knew in our hearts need be back but it was still an emotional rollercoaster of a movie.
The specials effects and standards in cinematography may have changed, but Christopher Reeve as Superman is eternal. Also, the coolest visual in this fight has got to be when he throws one of the bad guys through the office building. It still looks great.
None of the visuals look good, let's be honest! But this was the 70s and 80s, so it's no surprise that nearly 50 years later, things have improved dramatically. 50 years from now, kids will look at movies today and they'll look just as bad to them.
Would love to see Superman the movie and superman 2 joined together with all donner cut and Lester scenes all in as one long 6 hour movie be great to watch
This is the best mix of the two cuts I have ever seen up to the point where it stops. The only things missing are the woman next to Lois watching with her, Leueen, and the rest of the battle starting with the 'Evita' bus.
In all sincerity, I find this fight a lot more riveting than the one in Man of Steel. The crowd is involved, the atmosphere is electric and when Superman shows up, he looks like a BOSS. It's a relief when he shows up. And it looks real. The props, the buildings crashing and the pacing of the fights as well the as the editing. Man of Steel looked like a video game. I don't know man they both look pretty fake. I like both of the movies but honestly both metropolis battles in both movies were over the top and silly, for both their times. I personally like the MOS Faora fight in Smallville. it wasn't too crazy and really gave weight to superman's powers. like seriously in this scene. Zod throws him and it's just a broken windshield? nah..... a kryptonian, no matter who's side they're on, is gonna cause some damage!
I'll always love Christopher Reeve, he was "The Man of Steel" I grew up watching. He will always be "THE SUPERMAN" to me. Others have played the character well, but I guess every generation has their favorites....he was mine. R.I.P. Christopher Reeve....hard to believe he's been gone for almost a decade.
Incredible as these versions of the Kryptonians are 100 times more imponent and intimidating than in Man of Steel, with that look of a generic warrior of heavy armor and high technology. It's just proof that to create villains that be a threat you don't need thousands of pretty special effects. The presence of the actors alone is sufficient when they are made for their role.
I love the new movies but always will love Reeve's superman also. A scene in M.O.S got me crying as i seen reeves face when Henry Cavell destroyed the huge machine. So happy i seen this my first time in the theater as a child and at awe
I love how Clark delivers the line, "Would you care to step outside?" twice in this movie. Each time, it is a significantly different delivery and tone.
Well done. I have been watching a lot of Superman 2 fan edits and this fight scene is usually where editors have a problem, but aside from some music sync, you nailed it.
Ya know… they had a lot of imagination and vision to pull this off back in the day. I still love it to this day although Man of Steel is a masterpiece.
Yes, they are wonderful and very beautiful films, and we will never forget them, the wonderful Superman and McGiver as well, and Clean Destude Al-Western. These are really very beautiful childhood days.
If this came out today: 1:45 "Superman caused hundreds of deaths from that rubble!" 3:00 "Superman threw him through a building full of people, causing thousands of deaths!" 6:49 "Superman threw Zod into that sign resulting in more collateral damage and millions of deaths!" 7:02 "Why didn't Superman try to draw them away from the city sooner? He's responsible for billions of deaths! I miss George Reeves."
LOL so true, that's exactly my point!! granted there was less destruction here in this fight, but that's mainly because the cgi didn't exist at the time, but for its time that was still a lot of destruction. but yet no one complained back then and everyone complains now
+MelanicDisaster watch the movie again, a good portion of the city is still standing, if the whole city was destroyed, then how come the daily planet is still standing in the end, and Superman was able to walk in? plus this was superman's literally first day as Superman, and he had to fight the world engines, and then zod, in this fight it was just zod
+stickman3 I guess you never saw MOS, because whatever comparison you tried to make you grossly inflated. In MOS 1:45, 3:00, 6:49 x 100. How about Superman letting his Dad die over a dog yet he can expose himself to a bunch of bratt ass kids on a bus. This Superman he outsmarts and learns over his opponents. MOS he gets his ass kicked continuously and learns nothing. There is no comparison..I'm glad they made Superman of the 70s and will always be a true classic, It makes it easier for me to easily forget about the current Superman.
Exactly. Some comic writers at DC Comics have said, that Metropolis is New York City during the day, and Gotham City is New York City at night. They have also said that Gotham City is any street below 14th street in Manhattan, and Metropolis is anything above 14th street in Manhattan.
Strongly prefer Superman II over MOS. "Nostalgia" doesn't exist when this is clearly better. There's just more emotion and craft, not people flying around inside of a video game.
I loved how despite the seriousness of the battle there's well timed humour mixed in ...a bit like James Bond's multiple encounters against henchman Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979). This is one of many things that makes this battle superior over the MOS version.
When you grow up, you may realize that a good story and likeable characters makes a scene exciting. It's not about how much stuff you can destroy or how much CGI you use.
You're spot on with that mate, I guess he'd been Superman for about a week in MoS and it's like any job you have a learning curve. At the end of the movie he saved the entire planet where as a few thousand probably died because of Zod's actions.
I think the scene where Superman spins Zod into the sign still holds up. Even Luthor says "I didn't think this one would go the distance." Superman vs three Kryptonians? Bet on Kal-El.
The big difference and something I wish they would have put into Man of Steel is that Superman is still trying to protect citizens while he fights. Without that they made it look like he didn't care about anything but killing Zod.
It's sort of hard to fight and save people when you didn't have time to learn about being a better hero and when you are being attacked constantly by a guy who wants you and the planet dead in real scenario Man of Steel is what would happen there'd be no enemy gives you time outs so you can save people
Your right but I would have to argue that this IS Superman we are talking about. Their version of Superman isn't developed all the way yet and they put him in a world altering situation before he was ready. Like in the comics the situation he learns from is Jonathan Kent's death were he can't save everyone, but they changed his death in the movie a bit. Its cool I will wait until the sequel to see how much I like the new Superman ;)
The Man of Steel fight was more fast pace and aggressive that this fight. If two superhumans did fight there would be a lot more destruction, death, and buildings falling. Plus how is he going to save people if Zod is constantly throwing punches at him. When he stopped to save people in Man of Steel he was taken by surprise. Subduing Zod should be his only priority because if he takes his eye off Zod and gets killed then everyone dies.
dude i KNOW that all that dead and destruction everyone is bitching and being so fucking annoying about is a plot device for the next movie theres a reason for it you dumbasses
@@warofdarknessfang I remember him even showing remorse though. Christopher Reeves when he blows up the concrete wall above the people, has a look that he knows he made a mistake or that lives are in Jeopardy and he feels bad about it. You get none of that from Henry Cavill character
I GREW UP WITH THE LATE GREAT CHRISTPHER REEVE AS THE MAN OF STEEL. I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS SCENE AS A 6 YEAR OLD KID. IT STILL SENDS SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE. GREAT TO WATCH. THANKS FOR SHARING.
6:07 When Non is thrown through the building there's a quick scene before Superman emerges from the street showing a woman with a shoulder injury from the wreckage. That scene is one of those "throwaway" scenes that add enormously to the film - what begins as a mildly comedic scene (Non thrown through the skyscrapper) is made genuinely harrowing.
This is why movies like this work better as Anime. All the moves you can't make look real in live action just fit in as part of the same art style as a cartoon.
Love Gene Hackmen as Lex Luthor at 0.18-0.20, as he goes from general relief at Superman showing up to the rescue from Zod and his thugs, before going completely 360 as he realises he still needs to keep in with Zod for the sake of his own skin.
I think its KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN because on the dash of the car a KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN box was seen then later as ZOD URSA and NON are creating a wind storm we see a man and a woman walking out of a KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN restaurant seeing carrying their order before being blown away buy wind .
I honestly, as a kid, enjoyed this film far more than part 1. Though part 1, i friggin loved, just liked part 2 more. Probably cause Zod is soo friggin awesome in this film. Perfect casting.
I still much prefer this to man of steel. For a start the music is epic, I can actually see what's happening instead of it being some mindless CGI carnage and superman actually cares about the people of metropolis!
I'm sorry I really don't understand this type of comment. In MOS Superman showed repeatedly how much he cared for people even when faced with violence and mistrust. The battle in Metropolis looked pretty much like what one could expect if two super-powered aliens decided to throw down in an urban area. I like the Richard Donner movies (Christopher Reeve has a special place in my heart) but the fight scenes were very 'cartoony'. It's like comparing Adam West's Batman to Nolan's.
***** Totally agree. The MOS movie is actually the most realistic Superman to date. Superman is a god like raised like a human. He was depicted as such in MOS. I love the Christopher Reeve version but Superman is much more powerful than this even in comic book lore.
Joe Bryant Well supeman 2 and superman the movie superman is really more powerful then MOS superman.Remember he turned back time, and had other powers and was stronger too.Mos is just more updated in special effects and could show more details, that all.
Sone Hun it's a pretty basic drum synth track, nothing epic about it. John Williams tracks are multi layered and performed with a one hundred piece orchestra. To me that is one hundred times more epic than anything Hans Zimmer used in Man of Steel.
It always cracks me up, when Hackman/luthor says, "oh thank God" when Superman arrives; and when Zod looks him, he quickly says "I mean, get him!"
Hackman alone adds at least 1 star to the rating of any film he's in.
Deep down i think that LUTHOR knew it was only a matter of time before GENERAL JACKASS & his playmates got put down
Yaaa...
God, Gene Hackman is an absolutely brilliant actor! Love him!!!

dude i KNOW that all that dead and destruction everyone is bitching and being so fucking annoying about is a plot device for the next movie theres a reason for it you dumbasses
I haven't seen this in a long time. I'm surprised by how little action there actually is in this action scene. The music sells it a lot...
I guess Superman prefers Pepsi
This is why movies like this work better as Anime. All the moves you can't make look real in live action just fit in as part of the same art style as a cartoon.
Ursa "Superman!" * Manhole cover sends Superman reeling back * Best part of the fight.
Simply Epic...just simply epic!
Thank you so much for this great movie 🙂...🇧🇷
Love Gene Hackmen as Lex Luthor at 0.18-0.20, as he goes from general relief at Superman showing up to the rescue from Zod and his thugs, before going completely 360 as he realises he still needs to keep in with Zod for the sake of his own skin.
6:45 Woman in car is empty-handed.
6:46 Suddenly woman in car is eating a hamburger!
Good job... got the best parts of Lester and Donner's Cut.
I remember this when I was a kid
"COME TO ME SON OF JOR-EL!!! KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!"
I love how the camera keeps cutting back to Lois and everyone in the city looking up, as if they can all see them fighting from that one spot.
Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman ever!!
I honestly, as a kid, enjoyed this film far more than part 1. Though part 1, i friggin loved, just liked part 2 more. Probably cause Zod is soo friggin awesome in this film. Perfect casting.
5:59 - Superman messed that guy up!
A part of me will always love this movie but i won't let nostalgia sway my decision
6:30 Carla from Cheers makes an appearance
this is actually better than the man of steel cgi fest, less over the top and more reliance on practical effects
The chief's got it. Love Hackman's author.
This film reminds my childhood days!
Terence Stamp Amazing actor
Special effects are superb
2:52, loved that bit!!! ! hahahahaahahahah

As a kid I used to be scared of General Zod and his Kyrptonian criminals in this Supperman II
This is star wars music not Superman lol MOS music is much more epic than this.
Sone Hun it's a pretty basic drum synth track, nothing epic about it. John Williams tracks are multi layered and performed with a one hundred piece orchestra. To me that is one hundred times more epic than anything Hans Zimmer used in Man of Steel.
This scene was so cool that after I first saw it, I started drinking Coca-Cola and smoking Marlboro. I was 5.
