- A look at the sole surviving member of the Norfolk & Western Railroad's famous J class 4-8-4. The 611 is regarded as one of the finest steam locomotives ever constructed in the United States of America, and today it is owned and operated by the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, VA.
Footage of the 611 on the mainline in 2016 and 2017 was filmed by James Parfrey of steamtrainvideos.com
Drone footage in June 2023 was supplied by Neil Fox

I was very fortunate to get to ride in the cab of 611 in the summer of 1985 at Moberly Mo. When the engineer blows the whistle you don't hear it, you feel it.Your whole body vibrates. What a machine!!!!!
It sounds fantastic, what a great experience 👍
А как он чухает??!!АЖ МУРАШКИ ПО ТЕЛУ!!!!❤❤❤❤
Cool video! I’ve only seen 611 once, while it was operating during its 2021 visit at the Strasburg Railroad. Very awesome piece of machinery!
I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. I am starting to plan another potential video about the 611 but this time it will also have archival material of the N&W J class in steam days. This production is still a long way off from release, but it’s something I have wanted to do since the completion of this project just over a month ago.
MOST EXCELLENT VIDEO.I am sure O Winston Link would love it too.
Thank you very much for that Sam 😊👍 I have always been a massive fan of O Winston Link’s photography of working steam.
A symphony in steel, right there.
She is a beautiful locomotive. Looking forward to seeing the excursions that the 611 does in 2024.
So stunning and the sound so glad to see here.❤❤❤
Many thanks for that Volker, so glad to hear you enjoyed the video.
She is an amazing train I'm happy to have seen her alot I have lived near her for years
Sounds fantastic, it will be great to see the 611 operating again in the near future.
A fine piece of machinery indeed. In my opinion, she's (or rather, the N&W Class J 4-8-4s as a whole) the finest passenger steam locomotive ever made.
Looking forward to seeing the trips it does in 2024.
I Remember back in the 80s 611 would come through Jacksonville fl down the track next to US 17,
It has a special presence that captures the eye when it goes past at speed.
Me and my wife where on the ride on the 4-22-17
Was it a good trip onboard during the 4-22-17?
Прекрасный фильм😊❤ красота+мощь+благородство собрано в этом локомотиве💯💥💪💪
I am so pleased you enjoyed the video. Thank you very much for watching it.
I went and seen 611 the same month of June 2023!
Great to hear 👍
beautiful engine as Daylight!
Such a magnificent design that the N&W came up with for their express passenger service.
@@justab-29 I would love to make a similar production about the 4449 one day.
I remember seeing 611 on the 2017 trip. Hopefully I'll get the chance to see em on the Virginia Scenic since I missed out on it last year
It sounds like the trips on the Virginia Scenic last year were very popular.
The J class is said to have such well balanced wheels, that even with those small drivers, it can haul butt.
As best as I can remember, my family and I rode behind 611 on an excursion trip in the early 80’s that the Atlanta Railroad Historical Society sponsored from Atlanta to Chattanooga Tennessee. 611 developed an issue and was unable to take the consist back to Atlanta so diesel locomotives were used to power the consist back to Atlanta. It was still a fantastic experience (the kitty’s pal allen)
The 1980's were a good time to be around.
I kind of miss the whistle that she had in the 90's. It felt so powerful. That particular whistle is now owned by Preston Claytor as i understand it but sadly, i don't think we will ever hear it again.
I heard somewhere that the 611 has run with more than one whistle since it was first restored to service in the early 1980's. Do you know if any of these whistles are similar to ones that are fitted to other steam locos around the USA?
I rode on the April 22nd 2017 trip in the first dome car that was right behind the crew car. We had a front row seat to 611 conquering Danville Hill in the dead of night. What a heck of an excursion that was and well worth the $400 for the ticket cost. We did not arrive back until almost 11pm.
Fantastic to read this 👍
This was released on my birthday lol, also #611 was reunited with #1218 once more
Fantastic to hear this 👍😊 The steam scene on the N&W was brilliant and it’s great that many photographers and railfans back in the day were able to record them working hard.
Yeah, just imagine if #1218 and #611 were running together, I bet #2156 would be jealous
@@RetinazerProductionsOfficial It would be great to see the 2 of them running together again.
@@RetinazerProductionsOfficial I will see if I can organise a film shoot with the N&W 2156 one day.
Okay
Just adding a note in to let everyone know that earlier today I decided to launch a new RUclips channel for some of my current and future North American steam videos. The channel can be found at Rowan’s North American Steam Videos. The link can be found below:

Now that is a manly sounding whistle!
It sounds absolutely fantastic 👍
@@railmediaproductions3677 I wish they would put it back on her.
611 is one of my fave steam locomotives, She has a nice Whistle that looks like she's singing😍
@@JacobHeiseiGojirayashazilla994 She is a magnificent locomotive and a credit to the people who restored it to operational condition. Looking forward to seeing the loco when it runs again in the future.
Is it coming to Strasburg this year i missed it last year
Fantastic news, its been very popular up at Strasburg over the years.
Will it ever visit upstate New York?
Was that an old Milwaukee road sky top ?
I am not 100% sure but it certainly looks like a sky top from the Milwaukee Road?
definetly not a skytop lounge by the look
@@voidjavelin23 Thanks very much for that information. I am still learning about the different railroad carriages in North America.
@@railmediaproductions3677 fyi, skytop lounge has more larger observation view window along not having a dome view
@@voidjavelin23 Thanks very much for this information 👍
I would love to ride on this engine, how recent was this video and where is the J611 now?
Hi Bill. The 611 is currently on display at the museum in Roanoke. Most of the scenes in this video were taken shortly after the loco arrived back at the museum from the period of running on the Strasburg Rail Road in June 2023. I would love to make another video about the 611 at some stage, and possibly try to get a license to publish archival photos and maybe movie films of the N&W J class in regular service.
Will it ever visit upstate New York?
I am not sure about this but it would certainly make for a good trip in the future.
a hammering piece of junk
Are you feeling okay Brian ?
Awww. I hear there are meds to help with delusions 💊
Missed your shock therapy session, dear?
@@jeffg.8964 why, did I make any mistakes ? lol
cool history but glad these polluting monsters are no longer running outside of the odd museum piece. Also, the fireman in this train clip is over stoking the fire.
If the 611 met the DieBahn's 01,05,50 Steam Locomotives that my grandfather drove. And if they could talk the stories they would tell. "I think I can,I think I can." from the rythm. Of moving down the tracks. And hopefully she will be around in 2110 doing fan trips.
That would be a fantastic site to see 👍
Are there any videos showing the Drivers side of 611 in detail, like the first eight minutes of the video? This video answered questions I had for the detail I need for my model of 611.
Unfortunately I haven't got any close ups of the driver side of the 611. I am really sorry about that, we focused on the fireman's side of the engine as the lighting was much better.
Talk about power, hauling all those cars with ease!
She is a very powerful locomotive. It is currently on display in Roanoke where it awaits its next excursion run.
About 5k hp, where hp ~ 750w.
The J class features the most powerful 484s in existence like the 611.
Great video.
Thank you very much for that. I have watched many of your videos over the years and they are very enjoyable.
Very nice videography and music. I love this video thank you
I am so pleased you enjoyed the video Greg, thank you very much for your lovely comment and for watching the production.
The finest stack talk on rails with one of the finest whistles.
Yes I totally agree Jerry, she sounds fantastic and especially when the loco is working hard up gradients such as Blue Ridge.
@@railmediaproductions3677 agree
Her whistle sings, i wish that she has a doubleheader with 1218
@@JacobHeiseiGojirayashazilla994 I am pretty sure the 611 double headed with the 1218 back in the days of the original Norfolk Southern steam program.
