Coral Reefs | The Lungs Of Our Planet

If coral reefs die, we die. Coral reefs generate half of the earth’s oxygen. Whether or not you’re an ocean lover, the death of coral reefs greatly affects us all. Reefs are living, breathing organisms and are vital for regulating carbon dioxide levels in the ocean; they are essential to “the lungs of the earth”. Coral reefs are at the core of a healthy marine ecosystem and are responsible for a large part of the beauty that the ocean provides us. Unfortunately, not all reefs look as beautiful as the ones shown here as most of the ones I’ve dived and filmed in recent years are either dead or dying. However, there is hope and we can all do our part to change this.
If you own or operate a boat, be careful not to drop anchors on coral reefs to avoid anchor damage. It’s best to look for a sand patch or tie to a mooring buoy if one is available.
Going for a swim in the ocean? Make sure you’re wearing reef-safe sunscreen and check your hair and makeup products to ensure they don't include harmful chemicals that contribute to reef death. (i.e. oxybenzone)
Scuba diver, freediver, or spearfisherman? Mind where you kick your fins, place your hands, or what you bump into. We need healthy coral reefs to allow us to continue to enjoy the recreational and commercial ocean activities that we love.
