  • This short doco captures different life stages of wild Black Swans from the period of them nesting, to the cygnets growing up into juveniles. I filmed this in two locations in Victoria and New South Wales in Australia over a 12 month period.
I hope you enjoy this short doco!
    📖 Notes:
    - Shot in Mason Park Wetlands (New South Wales) and Wyndham (Victoria), Australia.
    - Footage was captured over a 12 month period.
    - Black Swans at nesting sites were observed from a long distance with a super telephoto zoom lens (Sony 200-600mm + 1.4x teleconverter) with an equivalent range of 840-1260mm.

    Black Swan | Cygnus atratus
"Unmistakable large black swan with a red bill. When swimming this species is almost entirely black. Wings show extensive white flight feathers when flying. Juveniles are similar but dark-gray. In Australia, compare with Magpie Goose, which has white belly, and white underwing with black tips. Typically found along inland waterways, rivers, sewage ponds, and coastal lagoons and inlets. Sometimes flocks together in enormous numbers on large wetlands." (eBird)

There is a current meme of a "Black Swan Event", namely that all swans are white, until they are not. Originally they lived on the Swan river in south western West Australia. Through human interaction they now appear all across southern Australia. This may have seen them saved from extinction, and to be enjoyed by all Australians and the World.

Thanks for commenting. Is that the meme that mentions "Since Roman times 'all swans are white' was a fundamental truth until the Dutch explorers in Australia found 2 black swans? They are majestic birds I am glad we do enjoy across Australia and in other countries.

Hi I need help please, theres a black swam family during this winter they had 6 cygnet, and then it went to 5, but the fathe black swan keeps harrassing its 2months old cygnet, and now its down to 3, he keeps biting them and harrassing them, last week they had 5 cygnets and today there's only 3 left. And the cygnets doesnt even have wings yet or fully grown feathers. Is the father killing them one by one? What can i do to help? He attacks one, and once they are no more, the next day he will have attack another of his cygnets they cant even fly yet. I WANTED to help the one last week, it was in bad condition cause he keeps attacking it and it was hiding in the bushes for 2 days, and i have been looking for it for 3 days now and I cant find it anywhere. It cant have flows away because its only 2months old. He keeps killing his cygnets.

Hi Luke, sorry to hear about your experience monitoring this black swan family! Although I’m not an expert, my understanding is that sadly there may be multiple reasons this could be happening. There might be a territorial dispute and it perhaps it might be another black swan attacking the cygnets? Another reason might be the parents detecting an illness/parasite affecting the cygnets. Lastly, I have read that at a certain young age, the cygnets are driven away by their parents to maintain their territory or because they begin nesting again to start a new brood. Sometimes this can happen earlier than they are ready too. Check out this story about a similar dilemma and situation that was shared by a wildlife rescue group in Queensland, Australia. Thanks for your care for wildlife, I hope this story is relatable and to consider if contacting a wildlife rescue group might be an option for advice. wildbirdrescues.com.au/rescue-stories/swan-wars/

@naturefilmsbyjohnkha Hi, thank you for getting back to me, I really appreciate this response. I tried ringing spca a d conservation and even our city council. But i believed nothing was done yet. My only wonder is why attack 3, they had 6 but 3 left due to the dad harrassing them, and today he started attacking the one off 3. 😔 thank you for all the information you have given me. I will keep trying to ask for help from our council. All your advice kinda made me calm down and understand a lot better. ✌️

@@c0f3324 Good on you for caring, it is tough, stressful and distressing when we do observe their daily lives. Nature can be beautiful and tragic at the same time, I hope it goes well Luke. Take care!
