- In todays video I get my hands on the BRAND NEW INVERTED KINGPIN design from @thundertrucks ! I set them up and get a session in on the trucks so I can give you my thoughts on how they skate and to see if this is something I would continue to skate from here on out!
JUST SO YALL KNOW - I was sent these trucks for free as I skate for Thunder. That being said, I do not get paid by Thunder, im not in a contract with Thunder & they did not ask me to make this video. Im just stoked on the idea of these trucks and wanted to share my thoughts on them with yall!
Check for the new Thunder Inverted Kingpins at your local skate shop!

I’d personally just put my titanium hanger on those base plates
I didn’t even think of that, not a bad idea at all! THANKS for watching !
@@tomasta you should do a follow up with the titanium hangers!
I thought abt this but don’t want to fuck em up
You’re the best one to test these trucks. Most people can’t do smiths good enough to appreciate these.
Krux, Royal and Independent trucks choked on their beer in this moment)))) 😁😄
switch flip back lip on a ledge is actually so sick
haha I feel it would be a lot different if I axrualllt tried it… but they did feel pretty cool, THANK YOU!
That’s so hard to do I was genuinely suprised you kill it dude. You know it wasn’t waxed either with the wheel revert noise 😂🔥🔥🔥
It’s crazy how well a pro skateboarder knows their board when you’re talking about having rounded edges on the baseplate and how you can notice the difference I’m just amazed that’s something you notice
lol right? Props to Tom. I just buy random shit, throw it together, and attempt to skate 😅 Like I know what size wheels/trucks/deck I like, but I’m 40 now and I’m not doing anything crazy, best I got is a nosegrind on a smaller ledge, throw a kickflip over a hip, etc lol.
I bet they feel nice before they've broken in. I like that roundness you get from nose and tails slides on the base plate. 👍🏼
Dude, you're so humble, I can't imagine anyone would think you were saying WOW about how rad you skate but that was a funny lil part in this video anyway :)
It felt nice to see those smith grinds, seemed very smooth. Also, as audience, we really enjoy watching you testing new product. Nice content, Tom.
ayy means a lot. Thank you!
Everyone hopping on the Grind King inverted kingpin train lol.
Yep
Thunder had to make this. This solves a big problem for them
11:28 dude that was awesome
wow now I’m reallly tempted to get a new set of trucks. Sick video ! Thanks Tom asta
thanks for watching ! I appreciate that !
Your Flatground tricks are definitely not boring bro , you’re killing it and now we have more content to see you ripping !
i apprecaite this! THANK YOU!
Damn watching you casually throw those kickflip back smiths got me hyped. I know im a little late to this video but that was amazing Tom.
In the 90s I used to just flip the kingpin round in my Indys cos it was just a regular bolt back then. That's just what we did.
Great vid. Ace bushing got some great rebound action.
Finally!!!! Thunders forever! Now they just need to make them in the titanium ones
I agree! would love titanium! Thanks for watching !
It's the same hanger, so you can just switch it
Great video and very insightful. I love my Thunder trucks
THANK YOU glad you enjoyed!
Dude The flat Ground tricks was super sick, i really enjoyed your super clean fs shuv
All the flat ground tricks were so clean! Damn good pop! 💯💪
Hell yeah smiithy day!!
I like it! Nice skating too 🔥
always keeping it real with trick legitimacy
i love your mystery logo tatoo
Wow! That was amazing, very cool trucks also. SS KF BS Smith 🎯
hell yeah nice vid tom
grind king really was ahead of their time
Sick
Yeah Tom solid skating as ever ! Such a sucker for the purple, they look real nice.
Look like the hold on back smiths lower is a lot cleaner from your holds, something I wouldn't notice too much my back smiths need work haha.
Usually stuck with the standard bushings, not too bad in the warm weather but interesting with ace bushings I really wanna try the low 44's they sell looking forward to seeing how they are with 8.2's.
Love it ! Always solid stuff from all, have fun out there !
You can put titanium hanger on baseplate with inverted king pin and put your bushings of choice.
yep! so far I don’t mind though, I can’t notice any weight difference really, but I am gonna swap my bushings back I think! THANKS for watching !
Bought some grind kings a few years back for the kingpin clearance. Were perfect for many sessions maybe 3 months worth but that Indy issue happened and the customer service was zero help with shipping out a new kingpin or anything. They’re great while they last but have a few caveats. A set of titanium thunders definitely would get a few of them. I still rock a set of titans from og reign skate that were this sick neon green metallic that glows under uv. Fave pair for sure. Thanks for the vid Tom!
I was learning kickflip bs smiths earlier this week and it was funny seeing you get into bs lip because I was having the exact same issue. Especially getting stuck on the grind because I’d be too on top of the ledge and it wouldn’t lock in correctly. Sick stuff. I would like to see you learn new tricks that you’ve never done before, no matter how weird or whacky the tricks are. I would like to see your thought process and how you go about adapting to a new trick.
The barrel bushing at the bottom adds stability to your turn.
tom asta flatground never gets boring that shit motivational
love to hear that lol THANK YOU!
@@tomasta no problem
Sw flip smith- crazy trick! Nice job
thank you!
sick sesh... a few others mentioned, but, I'll chime in as well... the Indy Mids get loose very quickly. I gave mine away after a few sessions.
Ima have to get a set 💪
Those trucks seem legit! Sick session Tom. Kick flip back lip on a ledge is awkward af!
I do have the Indy 144 mids and they do indeed come loose after a few good sessions
Same issue for me. Added inverted kingpins to standard Indys and found the trucks would loosen a good half turn on their own. Kind of a nuisance
those loo super siiiiick
6:20 I was just thinking that lol. You should warm up with tricks your uncomfortable with. It will expand your bag of tricks and be fun for us 🤗
That rounded edge baseplate sounds perfect i always hate new trucks until ive tailslid the baseplate down a bunch im glad im not alone in my insanity
Hell yeah, you sold me on these! You should do a short reel with just dipped smiths, i could watch that all day🔥🤌
I only realised the flip back smith was switch at the end. I thought you were skating regular the whole time. 🙆♂️🔥
From someone who only skates Independent trucks, I’ve been skating the Indi Mids with the inverted kingpin (only a few months now) but so far they haven’t loosened up on me at all. At least not yet anyway 😅🤷♂️ I did have to mess around a bit with the bushings tho at first. Sick video tho! 🤙 Breaking in new trucks suuuuucks
i fucking love your videos brother, never get bored of seeing you do the same warmups
THANK YOU!...i get it my own head about stuff lol
So glad they put an actual nut on the bottom to hold the kingpin in place. I skated indy inverted mids for 1 session and the kingpin was coming loose and making a clicking sounds that was horrible cuz of them using an insert for the bolt instead of a nut
Zoiks.😬
They did have a nut. The sleeve insert was extra to prevent kingpin wobble that is common with ikp trucks. That's why they were also heavier. But I did not like them either. The clearance still sucked and still had the traditional shaped head for tools which still got caught up on everything because of the sharp edges/angles. So it defeated a big purpose of an inverted kingpin.Compared to these thunders where the head is round/smooth.
3 sessions so far and trucks have stayed it place and felt normal… I think I am gonna swap back to my ace bushings though I just miss how they feel… THANKS for watching !
I've been on mine for almost 2 yrs, no issues.
@normanl.6891 ofc they work. Infamous problem loosening tho. They were doing warranties. The clearance was bad. I would rather have a rounded kingpin head and washer than indys sharp edge one that caught everything because the lack of clearance. I'm not even a thunder enjoyer, it's just obv differences.
Skated the reverse kingpin in the 90's, they are legit.
All love in this comment section - you really got some great community on here
😊😊😊
so dipped
I can vouche for Ace bushings, a set of classic 44's is the only trucks I never had to swap the bushings, still going strong with the originals. Indy's stock bushings on the other hand seem to chunk up and fall apart real fast now.
Hi Tom, I skate indy mids IKP, I have to say that they are great, the baseplates have a shaft nut inside, and thanks to that, the Kingpins stay stable all the truck's life.
i like the mids too
Watching you skate flat never gets old, no need to apologize.
Seen it in person. Homie Tom makes it look effortless
Lol I was about to say he realizes he’s crazy good!!! He said wow 😅
😆😆
titaniums make tricks/flicks//flips so fast i guess ideal for flipping in/out of ledges or bank to ledges. Still harder to manage for transfers or higher speeds on choppy/cutty spots and surfaces. At times they can make doing transfers/grabs/airs feel like youre riding a blank deck comapred to how heavy indy standards or indy mids are. I mean were not all Tiago lemos I can understand that. These seem really good out of the box from that standpoint its a huge improvement vs high/kingpins and some of the stock bushings thunders come with, or wheelbite tendencies i see when trying to land airs with them. Id say 92a bushings would be better. In my experience the thundres/bushings for me always broke in a lot better with a little tightening and some grease loss they get more elastic or what i like for skating. To me theyre just ventures with a conical bottom bushing that grind metal to metal better than most trucks and are pretty damn light. I like the pop response from ventures more...but the light/factor with thunders make them the easiest to do fliptricks with as ive gotten older. I just dont like the riding/profile/feel for higher speeds or doing airs/transfers. Id still say 151's with IKP are a nominal option in a quiver or shaped board to add a lot more response for flip tricks or weight reduction to a specific kit/setup. Even the clearance for stuff like running rails and doing slappy or flat bar grind/slide combos. On top of the glide the thunders offer/smith/feeble clearance is going to also be a nice setup.
The sf back lips honestly look sick af
haha they did feel kinda nice… but it’s a different story when I actually try a bs lip haha THANKS for watching !
Sick as always. When are we hearing more about the shape you’re working on with Santa Cruz!?
very soon! the sample of my shape just arrived at my house. so I will probably be skating that next week and giving yall an update!
These are making me consider switching back to thunder from ventures.. might just wait for the T2 model though
I mostly skate Indy nowadays thats just me back then I was skating Thunder and Ventures during my Middle/High school
I tried the indy mids with inverted kingpin and the nut that receives the inverted kingpin came loose. Threw some hard thunder bushings in them and they felt great while they lasted though
What are the cargos that tou always have on? They're dope
👏👏👏
👏👏👏👏
If it hasn't been mentioned you should get a T-handle alan key, it'll spin without hanging up and quickly.
fun trivia: the ring part of the hanger is called a yoke.
I got the indy inverted but I put the older krux inverted kingpin on them. Much lighter and more clearance.
haha sick! I had no idea… and damn that sounds like a sick combo
Hell yeah, good shit, you shoulda switched it to 60fps, i dont know anything about that stuff, stoked you got it tho🤙
I didn’t know till I got home! not a big deal though, i’m just glad I got it haha thanks dude
I need to know how good they are with slides with the base plate
I have the independent ones and never had a problem, actually I had to check if it was that model because I forgot lmao. I also loved Thunder more but the Independent are great too, and I'm also really picky about bushings and didn't need to change them.
Thats sick ! yea ive just heard through the grape vine..im sure some are good and some come loose thats tight you got a good set !
7:53 - you got tips on front nose grind pop out?
Switch the hanger to titanium 148 problem solved
Hope they at least make a forged base/hollow axle model. I got indy on all my setups but 2. One has ace af1 and another has some og thunder tfours
They need to make inverted LOW trucks. These are between Mids and Highs at 52mm height. Also, Duro for LOW truck bushings should be at least 94a-95a to avoid wheel bite. I can only dream lol
YES!!
I can't always find low trucks... and I'm sick of Frankenstein'n with Krux or Grindking kingpins.
You and me both bro…
Yup I agree I need lows. Fuck missd and hi trucks no good
these bushings felt wayy different after the 3rd day. hardened up a a lot for a 90.. probably swapping back to my ace bushings FYI
Krux had inverted king, hollow lows
Me: warms up with a kickflip
Tom: warms up with switch flip back smith
ahahha DEF not warmups lol THANKS for watching !
They remind me of grind king trucks.
It’s not the baseplate making the tail/nose slides stick, it’s the wheels. Since Thunder are more outwards than Indy’s the wheels make more contact with ledges/rails than baseplate, just need some wax on the side of the ledge
12:33 marking the footy!!!
Purple
yo tom we could watch a 30 min video warming up at the parking lot and casualy talking about tricks all day lol
14:32 - I've never had a pair of bushings tighten up on me. But then again, I only ride Venture.
thunder bushings are very mushy and soft feeling and if you skate them like that for a day or 2 you will notice when they break in they are much more stiff. it’s weird for sure but its always been a thing, at least for the thunder bushings… THANKS for watching !
thunder x grind king (or krux) is sick
Always break in the bushings before tightening them, or else they'll explode. I need that Ti inverted kingpin, until then I'll skate the Ti lights
Can confirm. Last week had some bones hard come in and i tightened my indy mids with inverted kingpin too tight and next thing i noticed was trucks felt looser than the stock indy bushings. Was split inside and busted thru the plastic cap on the outside
Dang.. been saying they should've done that a long time ago when Sliver Trucks introduced the inverted kingpin
Running ace bushings on royals. They’re goated. Do you still run the top bushing on the bottom? Also did those end up loosening up as you skate?
they didn’t loosen on me, not yet anyways.. as for bushings I got some ace “low” bushings and they fit pretty well in thunders, no need for 2 tops or whatever.. THANKS for watching !
Sw flip is my kryptonite, but this was motivation to concur them thangs haha soon enough
yesss! THANK YOU! sw flips are def harder than sw heels for me
So thunder made their own version of a grind king finally
i think that switch flip back losi at 12:48 was the one
haha that felt crazy
try a harder durometer Thunder top bushing for the quicker snap back to center you get with Ace's. that's what Ace is doing, Top - 91a
Bottom - 86a.
Smart! might have to give this a try..for some reason the thunder bushings just never feel right for me...THANKS for your input!
Hi, Tom!
HEY!
So they need to figure out the bushings for thunder and venture. I can’t find venture bushings anywhere.
take the titanium hangars and put them on that baseplate and kingpin bro
get those thunder hard bushings
i cant do hard bushings, soft for me !
I just skated that Fabiana deck and it was one of the best boards I've ever had in 20 years. I think I jived with the shorter wheelbase or something?
yesss the wheelbase at 14 is perfection !
you should mark a spot on the kingpin so that you can see if it eventually loosens up or not
actually a great idea, probably will do this, thanks !
when you smith do you use like all back foot to hold yourself or use the front foot and middle of the board to also grab the ledge ?
it’s a lot of back foot & leg, front foot kinda guides it/ keeps it dipped
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Long grinds are good for your soul. if people only knew what they were missing
Loosening of ikp trucks is a pretty common issue, so hopefully they got that dialed...
Seems to same setup as old g&s or grindkings. So i doubt thunder solved that problem.
Do you skate the bottom and top ace bushings? I imagine you have to use their cups as well??
yes, they are the ace low bushings..i use stock thunder pivot cups and thunder washers. THANKS for watching !
Silver made these like 15 years ago I miss those trucks
Grindking made them over 30yrs ago. G&S, san diego and deadbolt also.
I only skate hollows so if they made em like that I’d cop
these are hollow kingpin but not axle! THANKS for watching !
Are they making them hollow ?
i remember grind king trucks on that inverted kingpin. cons is that they got loose
.
Red Loc-Tite solves that issue.
haha yup me too…THANKS FOR WATCHING!
