No one would record this Mac Davis song IN THE GHETTO as it was too raw, especially during the race riots in the 1960s. A top RCA executive said we can't release it. Elvis heard it and said, "That's my next single, son" and walked away. The great Sammy Davis Jr famously turned it down. Only Elvis was willing to risk his career to get that record on the air-waves. Only Elvis could have performed it and gotten the radio play when it came out in the late 1960's, during the Civil Rights Movement. He made it his platform. One of his major public statements on the issues of racism and poverty. Without uttering a single press release or public statement. Not a single political word or comment. Amazing power of song by a very brave and loving human being.

@@BisscuteReacts yes yes If I Can Dream by Elvis Presley in the white suit and red tie as the finale of his 1968 Comeback special. Tribute to Martin Luther King. Probably one of the greatest performances of that era. The song was written specifically for him by one of his songwriters who knew him well and knew how crushed and saddened he was by the assassination of Dr King and also just all the craziness in general that was going on around that time. It's so compelling and the singing is so powerful and emotional. And at the end he just totally looks exhausted and drained. He puts the mic up and says thank you, good night and then goes backstage and apparently just sat down somewhere and just cried.

As an "older" Elvis fan, this was written by the late performer and song writer Mac Davis for Elvis. btw it was a huge hit in 1973 and well recieved. Elvis was very empathetic to the plite of the poor since his own background was quite similar, but placed in the "wrong side if the track" of Tupelo Mississippi, and later the projects of Memphis, Tennessee. He never forgot his roots and was extremely generous to friends and strangers alike. Another Civil Rights song written & performed exclusively by Elvis was "If I Can Dream" performed live in his "1968 Come back Special". Elvis perfected the genre of "Rock N Roll" from his own unique blend of Blues, Gospel and Country. He sang many genres excellently from Blues to opera, and everything in beteen. It would take a long time to really "get" Elvis, but this is a great start!

Elvis Presley, known as The King of Rock 'n' Roll. There are so many great songs he sang, most of them covers or songs wrote for him as I don't think he wrote many. If you want ballads, Love Me Tender, Always on My Mind, Burning Love, Flaming Star, It's Now or Never, Are You Lonesome Tonight and etc. More rocky songs, Don't Be Cruel, Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, All Shook Up, Suspicious Minds, Teddy Bear etc. As of 2020, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) credits Presley with 146.5 million certified album sales in the U.S., third all time behind the Beatles and Garth Brooks. He holds the records for most gold albums (101, nearly twice as many as second-place Barbra Streisand's 51), and most platinum albums (57). His 25 multi-platinum albums is second behind The Beatles' 26. His total of 197 album certification awards (including one diamond award), far outpaces the Beatles' second-best 122.] He has the third-most gold singles (54, behind Drake and Taylor Swift),] and the eighth-most platinum singles (27).

Just brilliant, a reaction from a young person who isn't scared to admit to not knowing Elvis Presley. It's easy for our generation to expect everybody to know who we think are global names but forget it isn't so. I didn't appreciate Elvis as a youngster, too much into metal bands, Elvis wasn't cool for our group. However, with age comes maturity and I could appreciate Elvis for what he was, a great singer and personality. I would drive my daughter to college every weekend and we'd listen to music on the way, 'In the Ghetto' was one of our standards. Try to capture the rest of this concert, it's worth the listening. Love from Aberdeen, Scotland.

The original title of this song is "The Vicious Cycle", meaning the cycle of poverty and how it contributes crime and the death of children. Elvis cared deeply about social justice. His gesture at the end owes to his practice of Karate something he shows off in most of his live performances.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO MORE ELVIS. He's got such a huge range of stuff and I promise you will not be disappointed. I mean he first became famous at around the age of 20 in 1956 after being known in the south for a couple years before that. He just exploded. Largely thanks to some television appearances and a lot of controversy over his dance moves at the time. There was quite the racist backlash against him because they thought that he was trying to introduce well N-word culture and corrupt white america. On the other hand a lot of young people love them and some old people did as well. So it is absolutely fascinating to see him perform from that time. But then he was in movies a long time and there are few good clips from that but they aren't truly live performances. He's got a ton of audio recordings specially early on that just rock lights out. And he is such an incredible singer and so sexy and I have yet to see anybody react to him no matter what your age is that they don't gradually or immediately fall in love with him. He is still making women melt half a century later, laugh. It's hilarious.
If you want to see a different side of him as a performer and a masterful stage Commander, check out and I think it might be from the same show actually, I think it's 1970 in Vegas and around that time he had a huge hit with a song called suspicious minds. And when he did it live, he has that incredible band and the backing choirs and they were all super tight and he would often improvise and be unpredictable and they would just go right along with it and the audience is loved it. It's really playful and by then he's older and his dance move had changed but he's freaking hilarious. He is hilarious and he's a Total Athlete man he is a total athlete. Some of the stuff he's doing? Wow.

Like many others, my mom was a fan of Elvis so I really did get much choice when it came to listening to him. He first recorded this song back in 1969 which was a weird time in social history to begin with. If he were to release this song now days, he would probably get hit with the "racist" tag in about 3 seconds.

This would certainly be one of Elvis' most-beloved songs. And, the choir was great singing backup. But, for his career, Elvis somewhat became a caricature of himself by the late 60s and the 1970s. He got hooked on drugs and his health became a serious issue. But, when he was at his peak, he was the most famous American on Earth. Have you done Johnny Cash? If you would be willing to play Johnny Cash, please consider the live performance at Folsom Prison. I think you'd really feel the impact.

You need to hear, "If I Can Dream" From the '68 Special. You haven't seen anything yet. He had a 23 year career. He recorded over 700 songs. We know your are young. He took some heat for recording this song during the racial climate of the 60's. He was a true advocate for civil rights. I am a child of the 50's, now almost 80 and will love him forever. Be Blessed.

@Bisscute- In the Ghetto was one of my fav Elvis songs and it was a top ten hit of his released in 1969. You should start off by reacting to Elvis Early stuff like That's all right Mama, Don't Be Cruel, Jail house rock. Then I recommend you you go his later stuff like If I can dream, How great Thou ART, Bridge Over Troubled Water, You Gave Me A Mountain. I strongly recommend you also check out Elvis and The Black Community. Its a short 15 minute documentary that will let you know all about Elvis and how black people influenced him.

Elvis was told by his manager and recording studio not to record this song
It was about black people in the ghetto.
Elvis felt so strongly about the ghetto because he grew up poor himself
    Back then
People were racist and didn't want to talk about the blacks in the ghetto
    Like Elvis said
They turn there heads and don't want to know
Elvis was bringing blacks and whites together and some people didnt Ike that
So to cut a long story short
Alot of people didn't want Elvis to record this song
