My current Jade bonsai is going on 25 years. Started it from a cutting of another of equal age, at trimming time. My Juniper bonsai of about 8 or 9 years came from the front yard as a 2" plant. Now I've recently discovered another Juniper sprout. Home cultivation seems to be working very well. Thank you for the interestiing, and informative video.
Hello! I recently found your channel, and the bonsai making process is very intriguing. If you turn a sapling/young tree into a bonsai, how does that affect its growth into an adult tree? Also can a trimming grow into a full sized tree? I recently bought cherry tree trimming online, and I have limited knowledge on growing a tree.
If you want a thick trunk, it is best to let the young tree grow freely (and in a larger training pot/ your garden) for a few seasons and then start cutting it back. If you trim young trees, you stunt their trunk growth in comparison. RUclips has many very informative bonsai channels (including this one), that teach you everything about the process! My other favorites: Peter Chan, Nigel Saunders Hope that helps! Cheers
Last year I grafted a twig of ornamental cherry onto a dwarf rootstock. Is this an easy place to start with bonsai? I haven't done anything to it since last year
I grew this one from a cutting, however I get material from various places, including garden centres. Also from nurseries, bonsai traders and gardens when the opportunity comes up
It depends what you start with and what end goal you’re aiming for. A seedling takes longer than a pre-trained plant, a small bonsai is quicker than a large bonsai. There are ways to expedite the process, but we are still bound to the growth rate of plants, which is inherently slow in human time scales
Depends where you live, but I would do an online search for a bonsai nursery near you. Or check out your local garden centre for stock material. Of not that, try cuttings or even seeds! Hope this helps 😊
I got mines in my garage just sitting on a table under an led panel since it’s dropping below 50 at night and wet. Was thinking about putting up a tent or a small polycarbonate green house in the back yard.
Question: Why to bonsai roots needs so much care…. Using the variety’s of soil mediums seems silly. Plants just grown in the ground . The plants outside don’t seem to care about akadama or lava stone…. I’d love a “basics of Bonsai” video….. well wishes great content!
Yes good question. Water behaves differently In the bonsai container than the ground, so we amend the substrate to hold more air and less water than potting soil. Then, some species like very dry conditions, so we add even more airy (pumice and lava rock) and less water retaining. There is more to it, but that’s the short answer. That’s a good idea for a video, thank you

Sometimes graft unions can swell as the plant grows, but yes, can be a good start.
This plant is edible. Very common here in South Africa.
It is indeed! I think they have a bitter taste.
Where do you get your trees from, just ordinary garden centres?
I grew this one from a cutting, however I get material from various places, including garden centres. Also from nurseries, bonsai traders and gardens when the opportunity comes up

Hot, bright, and dry 😁
