What a great way to show how to apply the knots to create these systems. Thank you!

If you could tie the taut line closer to the figure eight, when you pull the tail the taut line would rest against the loop and just pull and it will automatically not allow any reversal of the slack. We used to use something like I’m describing when I used to do rope rescue. The pulley would back up the taut line or Prussick and when you pulled rope on the other side of the pulley, no slack would run backwards.

I think this is pretty cool. And although there are other approaches (of course), yet I agree this tension system is satisfying! I think I would call it the inchworm knot. 😊

Instead of using the tail of the orange rope to tie a friction hitch hold the tension, you can completely skip this part by putting the maroon line through the figure right loop one extra time and pulling. This will make something called a blackwall hitch (or awning hitch). You can pull the maroon tail to make tension, and tie it off with a couple half hitches just as you did in the video.
Also, your tension knot is not a “taut line hitch”, but rather a magnus hitch.

Of course, there are options, even simpler ones. This is just one way. I agree about Taut. Later, I recorded a video about that small but still noticeable difference between Taut and Magnus.

It looks like you are using a modified prusik knot to keep the tension.
    Great idea !!!

It is not a prusik knot. This knot you can see also in other CbyS materials.

There's a whole family of knots of this type, called friction hitches. The taut line hitch is one of the weaker ones. A midshipman's hitch or ezelius hitch would hold better.

If you put another figure 8 knot in the left hand line you could use this to make a versatackle for extra tension to span large gaps using two lengths of cord.

    • @jakemccoy
      @jakemccoy 6 месяцев назад +1

A versatackle is what I would tie.

I do something similar but with a Farimond's Friction Hitch. A much more secure & easy to undo system IMO.

There are much better ways than this to get tension on the line but where this method could be very helpful is if your ridge line is not lomg enough to span the gap. Instead of joining the two ropes to lengthen the line you can use this method.

For heavier loads, I would prefer to use a Prusik knot as a friction knot, always ensuring the knot is properly secured before using the line.

Nice idea. It's a very good tensioning system that has the advantages of the easy adjust of a simple friction hitch (without retying) and the trucker's hitch for easy tension setting, but without their disadvantages.
I would change the component knots in the system to ones that are more suited for the work. I don't think the directional figure 8 is rated for a load on the free end, so I would use an alpine butterfly instead, which is rated for loads on all the parts. If you really loaded the figure eight tail heavily, it might deform the knot shape and make it bunch up oddly.
The friction hitch was a magnus hitch due to the reversed final hitch, not a tautline. The tautline is an abomination and should be dressed properly as a midshipman's hitch. An upgrade of the friction hitch would be a blake's hitch or maybe an adjustable grip hitch, which are my favorite 2 single ended friction hitches. The blake's hitch has the best slide-to-grab ratio. You don't have to dress it tight to hold, so it slides easily and locks well.
Now if I could just make it work for a single unbroken line. But you need the extra end to make it work.
One of the nicest features is that you don't run a sliding line around the tree, scraping up the bark. If it is larger rope for a very heavy load, you can put a carabiner on the loop knot so you don't have to rub the ropes against each other on the trucker's tensioner.

Or you could just tie the extra bit of paracord to the ridge line and tie a trucker's hitch 😂

Overly complicated for the intended service. A simple loop used like a trucker's hitch in a full-length line would do the same job more quickly and efficiently.
Friction knots and hitches are useful in climbing and providing security when dealing with heavy loads but a waste in this application.
