1975 Alfa Romeo Montreal Review - Italy's Forgotten Muscle Car Is Like Nothing Else
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 авг 2021
- In today's episode of JayEmm on Cars, I drive the often forgotten Alfa Romeo Montreal. Named for the motor show where it was revealed, the Montreal combined a striking Gandini-penned body with a sublime 2.6L V8 engine, derived from the Tipo 33. However, underneath was an old Alfa Giulia Chassis - so just how does this hodge podge of ingredients work, almost 50 years later?

The best sounding engine so far.
Sounds like an old ford v8, (probably same firing order). Come to canada, every second old rusty ford pickup sounds like this.
@@Arayig1982 hahahahhahahahahah .... Muhahahahhahaa ... Omg dude you made me laugh so hard with this comment ... ( Btw I'm sorry for your hearing impeachment )
@@davidecardinali9998 and I'm yours. De Tomaso Mangusta. Anyone? Cardinali? Anyone?
@@Arayig1982 yeah, every second old rusty Ford pickup is powered by a softer version of the 33 stradale engine and redline at 7k rpm. I can confirm it.
@@Arayig1982 what about the mangusta ??? That is build on the same frame ??
Ah yes, the Montreal: the one that makes even other Alfa owners go "crikey, you're brave".... and if it's blowing smoke that's fine, it just means it still has oil. :P
In seriousness though, this was a rare treat and a pleasure to watch. I sat through the whole thing with a giant grin on my face.
My old man had one of these about 20 years ago when I was a kid. I think he said it was the only black one ever imported to the UK and it was a lovely thing, 27,000km from new. Immaculate condition.
He bought it as an investment and sold it around 5 years later, cant help but think he should have kept hold of it!
Alfa opened the gates of hell and pulled out the most demonic engine I've ever heard. This engine whales and cackles and roars. I love it
On the review scale of "amount of different expressions on Jay's face", this car scores pretty well... 😲 😵 🤯 😁 🤩 🤪
200bhp or not this is still quite the most desirable car I've seen on this channel.
200hp from 2.6 litre NA engine.
200 bhp from a 50 years old 2.6 ltrs N/A engine isn’t too bad at all.
far better driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow
sometimes i hear 500 h.p. but for what 200h.p. is enough and the pleasure of driving is far superior bcause you use all 200h.p. and 500 when do you going to need them ,to much hay
@@RUfromthe40s i daily drive 300hp and i cant use it 100% because local roads are not nuerburgring.
I love how Alfa makes a musclecar and somehow makes it sound even better..
Honda at the NSX mk1 development phase bought some ALFA's to learn what the typical ALFA sound meant and how the ALFISTI managed it.
Perhaps it was the quad cam design made it sound that way? Idk. The Americans are still using OHVs in 1970 though Ford did developed a SOHC V8 but never made it standard for later models and America only start using DOHC V8 in the late 90's.
absolutely agreed XD
Sounds biblical!! I’ve got a 1970 dbs vantage which I’m currently sorting out mechanically. It’s a bit scruffy but when it’s running right the offer’s there !
That would be a great car to see on the channel :)
I’d love to see it get reviewed on this channel
Yes please
@@JayEmmOnCars great! It’s no DB6 but has it’s own charm!!
Love them myself personally
Was NOT expecting that exhaust note!
“Proper stuff,” as JayEm would say!
Sounds so deep for a 2.6 V8!
Right up there with an Espada when it comes to Gandini-inspired “love me and hate me” deliciousness 👌🏽
Just like an Italian woman.
**chef's kiss**
The Montreal sparked my interest when I saw it in the 1974 Michael Caine film 'The Marseille Contract'. The chase scene there was later replicated in 'Mission Impossible 2' and 'Goldeneye'! What a car! What an engine!
ruclips.net/video/80ecPj1TkYo/видео.html
@@Mexxx65 Awesome! In case you are all wondering, the Fairground music was to done to tie this scene to a prevous one when the two main characters met on a Fairground!
7:47 “I’M PUTTING THE HAMMER DOWN, HARRY” . Lovely stuff
This is one of the most memorable true sportscars in my childhood. Outer appearance equals to the GT40 and the Miura. Performance is lacking to the other two mentioned, but the visual effect on a young boy's mind back then is what makes me a big fan of the Alfa Montreal.
@@Anttihii I learned about the Stradale much much later. It was never featured in any magazine in Europe that I knew back then nor was the internet even a distant dream. I simply didn't know it existed.
@@JariVasarainen Yes, because the 33 Stradale was made 18 times, and some of them was never had a 33 Stradale suite as they were given to design studios to make cars like the Iguana of Italdesign, the Navajo of Bertone or the Pinninfarina P4. And the price of the dozen roadgoing cars (which were offered to well respected Alfa customers and dealership owners) was as high as 3 Miuras by the time (60 thousand USD vs. 20).
There was no reason to pass any of them to the press as they never intended to sell them to the public. What it shows that clearly Tipo 33 Stradales have no lock at all.
What Jay did not mentioned about the engine that Alfa kept the dry sump system for the 3,925 Montreals too which has its root back in the Tipo 33 race car.
The original concept car at the 1967 Montreal Expo (where it was displayed) was still equipped with the 1.6-litre Giulia 4-cylinder engine.
This is why I love this channel so much! Not gonna throw shade at any other YT's, but there's no BS, just genuine down to earth reactions and honest car content, keep up the great work Jay!
As a lad growing up in Australia in the 1970’s I thought these were magnificent. A friend of my parents owned an Alfa dealership so I was privileged to view one in the flesh. Today, it typifies what a good, sporty, classic car should be: Beautiful, sonorous, free of all the “roadholding” and “environmental” accoutrements that afflict modern cars this beauty also possesses the timeless ability to be fun, awe inspiring and just a delight to drive at speeds that don’t attract the Rozzers from the mobile taxation office. Thank you for another wonderful review James. Just thankyou.
Not even finished watching and i already want to watch again. That noise!!!!! The sound of my people right there. James thank you so much for sharing this. And thanks to the owner too. Best one yet.
I do so enjoy when you drive a car that really surprises you. The expression on your face was priceless.
Great review of one of my favourite cars. I’m lucky enough to belong to an Alfa club here in Australia that contains about 5 Montreals so, while being a very rare car, I do get to see them reasonably often. You are spot on, they are an incredibly special car with one of the best sounding V8s ever made.
Any 33 stradale ? ( Best looking car of all time )
Downesy what state are you in?
I'm in Vic, also part of alfa club
@@ashlogan2049 I’m in SA.
Also so proud when a journalist is so impressed by a car made by my country
You should upload some "shorts" of your most memorable test drive moments
Let him find and try a Fiat Dino 2400 Coupé ;)
Never knew this car existed.... And i immediately love it.
Don't think I've ever seen you so excited about a car, got to love a classic, especially when it has a V8.
Oh that sound... pure passion ❤
What's with the silly mask
@@bhok1971 it's very silly 🤣👍
Thank you for this video, my late father was a massive Alfa and Jaguar fan and I fondly remember growing up in the 60's & 70's, holidaying in GTV's, 2600 Sprint's, Montreal's and his beloved Coombs Jag. Great video and if I'm honest the first Ive watched from you for a long time.
Paul is a lucky/brave/clever man. Sounds like a beast
Always loved these. There was a time they were under £20k - same as a Griff. Not any more!
When you cracked the throttle and let it wail the first time, your reaction was priceless! That thing sounded SO good!
Always had a soft spot for these, but never heard one, but what a sound!
I have never seen anyone do a better SouthPark Cartman face then when he “gives it the beans” 😂😂
Stunning car. Glad you could experience it. That engine :-)
I come back to this video every once and a while just to listen to the sound
every couple of days for me...
I absolutely love this car. The joy you look to have had is enthralling.
this is my first time ever knowing this car and i already fell in love
Not much to say but hello from Montréal, from one of your early fans and subscribers. What a great sound; 1974-5 was kind of an era when la ville de Montréal hit peak cool, between Expo 67 and the Summer Olympics. Montreal now is one of the world's more livable cities but no longer a world cultural capitol. Caaaaaarrrrrrr!!!, indeed.
The closed captioning software interpreted some of the exhaust sound scenes as either:
Applause
Music
Laughter
Very appropriate!
I’ve loved these for years - an amazing look and what a sound !!! Thanks great review
That exhaust note brings tears to my eyes
No one makes them like the Italians of old. Great video, thanks for reminding us of this amazing classic.
I never forgot it, I've always loved the Montreal.
Glad to see you back in a classic car. I love it. You made my day. Thank you.
love it!!! "... never has 60 miles an hour sounded or looked as good as this!!" ;P
Glad I listened to this through a hi-fi. What a wonderful racket.
Always been a huge fan of this car ever since seeing a blue one at a local classic meet years ago. Alfa Romeo V8. What more needs to be said. Just lovely.
One of the best yet! What an awesome car, that exhaust note sent a shiver down the spine. Thank you for sharing.
Hey big Jay . . . I'm happy if you're happy.
And you are . . . lookin' very good in there.
I absolutely love the way it looks. A proper Alfa
Jay don’t think I have ever seen your face so full of awe, shook and wonder! Great car remember this from my Top Trumps in the 70’s. Awesome car, great looks and sound! Don’t think I have ever seen you express such sheer joy, Great video.
By far the nicest and most special nostalgic Italian car that you have reviewed on the channel. These are very special cars, and it is great to see and hear one once again. This makes me reminisce about a friend that had a brown RHD version back in Essex in 1974, it was super rare and it could easily be this one, but I still remember being blown away by this thing some 47 years ago. Everything else at the time seemed so boring and normal. Thank you for showing this.
For me the Alfa Montreal and the Citroen SM are the two best GT cars ever made. This car looks like a dream to drive on real county roads.
What a rare beauty!
This reminds me of my
My Father in Law bought a Lamborghini Urraco, It had a 2.5 V8, look it up on Wheeler Dealers.
I think it had about 230bhp. It was transversely mounted and was on carbs. When he bought it, it was Brown and had a stupid spoiler but my father in law removed the spoiler and painted it back to its original silver.
It looked stunning and the engine, just wow!! The sound was just glorious!! Pump the accelerator 3 times to prime the carbs, turn the key, and you could hear each cylinder filling and firing until it erupted with the most rip roaring sound. It was alive!!!
Set off warming it up was needed but once there the crescendo of valves chains pistons was amazing. Stretch its legs upto the red line and the hairs on your neck were up on their ends like a crescendo in a concert. You could also feel every note and smell the mix of petrol and oil like a fine wine.
I feel privileged to have driven that for a week as my clio Williams was in for repairs ( long story) and my father in law lent it to me!!
Best memory was taking through the Snowdonia in Wales!!
Stunning. Simply stunning. A lot of modern cars have no soul. This has soul.
What a totally stunning, awesome and utterly wicked car. What a sight to behold and with an utterly outstanding soundtrack, right up there as one of the best! You could certainly see you enjoyed every minute of driving the gorgeous Alfa.
Best video yet 👍 My favourite era of cars, gorgeous engine and your enthusiasm is great😀 You really look like you’re having a blast.
Thank you James, first knew about Montreal from Jay Leno's show. What an engine sound and saw biggest smile on your face
Oh god that is the best looking car I have ever seen.
This and the SZ, two of the coolest back catalogue Alfa's .
EDIT: Those Jaeger clocks and speedo's. CLASS
Yeah I noticed the JLC dials and clocks.....dont think I have ever seen that on a car before although I'm guessing there must be others.
My Dad s Renault 20+ 30 used to have them, as did many Lancias Mg's & Abarths
@@r7coo Well there would be an amazing car collection for someone to have.... All cars that have ever had JLC dials / clocks
@@martinl2325 yeah, cool, what a talking point. NOBODY has that collection. I like an old Smiths dial also.
It was so cool to see Jay enjoying this car so much. The sound! Oh My Gawd!
Awesome car I had no idea existed. Thank you for this video. Keep up the good work.
This is a must in my dream garage... Holy moses, it's glorious
I loved this nearly as much as you did. Love the car, love the noise and loved your excitement and joy. 😎👍😎
its always good to remember that not everyone has the same set of knowledge even within a particular community- good to see you discover this and the great reactions to go with it. I was aware of this since childhood but not sure i'd ever heard one...
The Montreal is just a masterpiece. OMG, what is this car beautiful. It could only be designed in Italy. This thing sounds glorious!
Jay, there is a driving technique that old guys like me (70+) were taught that makes cars like this handle. I remember one of these floating through a right hander in front of me and the sound then was as good as it is now. Alfa's in that time period had some great handling cars that also looked good and sounded good too. The 105 that was stripped for racing and suspension tune was another. The Alfa Spider is another that shone in that period. Cars handle very different now. Tyre tech is almost magic. I race at a track in QLD AU and get almost 8 seconds faster laps now with only modern tyres and no other mods. The race spec Prince Skyline of 1967 is another car that came with a great sound track.
I had this car about 40 years ago in Germany, color brown metallic, but is had 2.9 liter V8 engine. Driving it on the Autobahn whas just frightening. Jumping like a wild horse while almost going 250 kmh/h. But big Problem so so far there was only 1 master engeneer in Frankfurt who could serve and maintain this car, and 1 more master technician in Duesseldorf. Biggest problem we had whas the mecanic LUCAS Injection pump (size like a vw polo motor) pumping the gasoline in liters in the engine . Anyway , i loved that car cause in that time one of the most beautiful cars ever.
My Montreal (1975) had an SPICA injection pump. It was a dangerous car to drive and needed full concentration at all times, espevially when cornering and on uneven toad surfaces.
Still? lots of fun and that screaming sound on high revs... wow @
2nd to the glorious engine sound.... you can hear the glorious mechanical metallic clunk of the gear changes......what a fantastic car
You lucky, lucky boy Jay. What a total classic, stunning car and one I have lusted after for years. Typical Alfa, gorgeous sound. This is how the boy racer Audi and BMW's should sound today.
Gandini is for me the absolute master of car design, and there have been a few. Congratulations to the owner on the choice of colour - very authentic 1970 (& I was around then).
I'm reminded of what Clarkson said after driving the Disco Volante: "I love this car. I really do". Thank you, James, for brightening my day.
The, the...SOUND of that car! Im in love!!!!
Fantastic vid! keep watching (or mostly listening) over and over... Getting my Monty delivered in ~3 weeks!
Epic sound! 👍 Having said that I don't remember them sounding like that back in the day...
Prob my favourite JM vid so far. Clearly just loving it.
Those things are so freaking cool. The headlight louvers are super rad!
I have just fallen in love. I can't believe I hadn't known more about this car before, especially given that I now remember having seen one or two of them around in the seventies/eighties, but had never HEARD one! It has gone straight into my list of dreamcars, and not very far from the top. I love the sound of my Chimaera 500, but this is something else! Thank you VERY much to JayEmm and the owner for this wonderful surprise! Forget all this modern machinery, THAT is a proper car!
now thats an underrated gem, i first seen this on the jay leno and immediately fell in love
I'm just gonna rewatch it with headphones. This car is just growing and growing on me for the past ten years i'm in love
0:04 seconds in and I've already got goosebumps - what a sound!
I saw a dark red one of these at a fair a couple of years ago and was instantly smitten. And now that i've heard it on your vid, i love it even more!
The old Clarkson line that ''You Can't Be A True Petrolhead Until You've Owned An Alfa'' is silly until you actually own a good Alfa.
It's taken me 50 years but now I sorta get what he's implying. Have two and still can't get enough.
What’s your idea of a good one?
😍😍😍 What a car! What a noise! I've always loved these. Well done for landing a review of this car. Other cars I'm still waiting for you to review: Lancia Beta Montecarlo, Ferrari 512TR, 2+2 mid-engined Ferraris, the Maserati Khamsin and either a Bora or a Merak.
Thank you for a great review of a special car, unequaled today!. Viva Alfa Romeo!
oh wow that's beautiful ! this has always been my favorite alfa! great video
Great stuff, JayEmm. This car is a credit to the owner who keeps it original. I saw one in Adelaide and was surprised it had a live axle rear end. stunning looking car and seems very driveable, from your video.
Ive wanted one of these since I was a kid. Wonderful, unique, and unusual cars! When I lived in Huntington Beach, someone had two, sitting in a storage lot getting sun baked. I wished I couldve hit them up about buying one.
Favourite Alfa they did em in some amazing bright 70’s colours 👍👍
I think this is the best review you've done James 👏👏👏
I am shocked, SHOCKED, you did not know about the Montreal! Engine sound up there with the best. Unique.
I love these cars. Saw one once at a classic car show in the same colour. Can't afford one so will have to make do with my Suzuki Cappuccino which is great fun to drive.
Hey, those cappuccinos are great fun.
A thoroughly enjoyable video, always loved the Monty…. Now love them even more 👍
Thanks for the fantastic video on such a rare, compelling under-represented icon. Your facial expressions say more than words could...
Oh my f***ING god. This is absolutely beautiful. Sounds as good as it looks and that's saying something.
That looks like so much fun, and sounds epic. I love the look of these, I remember looking at them in the mid to late 00s and they were circa 15k. As with many others prices have gone mad 😬
That's just epic. That whole video made me grin like a loon. And the look on your face, James. Priceless.
This sound, no word to describe it. What a brand...
Your face at 3.46 says it all, no words needed !!
I know that face!... It's the same one I make when I plant my R53. That engine is pure filth, gives me goose bumps listening to it through a lowly mobile phone speaker. Great video James 👌🏻
I will never forget my ride in a red one in 1978, it belonged to a friend of my dad.Yes, best sound ever.
One of the coolest cars ever.
I've seen some in auto show in Belgium. Beautiful.
I may be old, but I am somewhat surprised that so few people know of them. I remember their first appearance and thinking it was such a wonderful design, which certainly belies its 50 years. Thanks to you and the owner for this - and the colour is perfectly in period!
The most gorgeous-looking and probably also -sounding sports car of the 1970s. Period. There's this photo I remember of the Bertone factory, where they made montreals next to Fiat dino coupé's - dream factory-stuff. My sincere thanks for uploading this one.
