  • Autonomic hyperactivity is a condition that is often associated with brain injuries. It is characterized by a coupling of physiological responses that are normally not linked, such as an increase in heart rate and blood pressure occurring simultaneously, along with sweating. This phenomenon is thought to arise from a loss of inhibitory pathways in the brain that would normally govern these autonomic responses. Normally, blood pressure control and temperature regulation are separate processes, but in autonomic hyperactivity, these systems become dysregulated and linked together.
