This is great!!! Car is awesome!!! In '77, i met a gal who i later married and bought a '69 Charger (383 mag, 727, sure grip). Friend of the family had a Dart GTS 340, same coppertone gold as mine. Always fun when we got together. He's stayed in touch over the years and has been a Dodge mechanic since shortly after we met in '77. Sadly my car is gone but he still has his....covered, not running but he still has it!!! Lucky so and so ;)
I had a 69 340 Dart Swinger HP factory. Directional pistons for higher compression. Double roller timing gears and chain and dual point distributer. Quickest car I ever had.

Thanks for this video, when I was 17 I had a 340/ 4speed same color. I knew they could get a 383, but I learned something new today about the M code 440! I sure wish I still had mine.
Hi Louis Nuessle, Happy to read you enjoy this car, and glad to read it brought back memories of your 340 4 Speed car :-) Fun when we get the chance to learn something new like the "M code". I find the learning from the Care Taker adds a fun part of the stories, Lou
The Dart GTS came with a 383 but this is a special M code Dart it's got the 440 that is cool they started with the 1968 Standard Dart LO23 Code that came with the 426 Hemi that Chrysler sent to Hurst to build then they had the 1968 GTS cars sent to Mr Norm's in Chi town to do the 440 cars and Mr. Norm renamed them the GSS aka "Grand Spaulding Sport" Only 50 440ci GSS were built in 1968 and Chrysler liked it that they got Mr .Norm in 1969 to build them again. These were all built so Dodge could run these cars in the NHRA under the Super Stock class.
I bought a 69 Dart GTS when I was stationed in Ft. Sill, OK in 1970. It had the 383/4 bbl with a Hurst 4 spd. It was the same green with a black interior, black vinyl top and wheels/tires like this one. Man, was it fast. I put headers on it and loved it; until I got stationed in Germany and my Dad went and sold it. When I came home I ended up driving a Rambler station wagon.
Look up the LO23 code 1968 Dart it's even better or the BO29 code 68 Barracuda but this car is cool that's for sure they built them in 68 too but they only made 50 of them in 68

A 69 440 Dart GTS must've been insanely fast...the lightest Mopar body with their best street engine. I knew a guy with a 69 Barracuda with a factory 383 automatic and that was really fast. I had a 73 Plymouth Duster 340-4 speed and that was a really quick little car. A 340 Duster or Dodge Demon was probably the fastest car you could still buy in the 1972-74 era other than a 73-74 455SD Trans Am/Formula Firebird
My brother. back in the mid 70's, wanted this car...… He searched everywhere trying to find a 440 or 383 dart. He ended up with 72, 340, Demon, which I wouldn't ride in after he did a bunch of high end, performance, backyard mechanic work... I was eight and the damn thing scared the shit out of me, when he'd punch it) Thinking back, it got him out of being my kid taxi service....… LOL..... Even back then, getting a guy to part with a Dart GT was impossible. I can't imagine the whiplash, when that car is floored from a rolling 25 to top out. The 440 is the choice, high performance, reliable, motor of it's era. Beautiful car. I'm envious.

But a 383 it was It went pretty good but was not stock either . Had head work manifold big Holley ...and while My Cuda was Bone stock the 3 Deuces and 4 spd with 3:90 rear made it a handful to drive . it had a factory dual point distributor . I do recall hating the tune up part of owning that car because the plugs were not the easiest to remove & replace .. I never seen or heard of a Dart with a 440, I heard of them coming with a 383 and there was the race Dart with the hemi but this is the first 440 car I ever seen or heard of and I love it thanks for sharing. A guy up the road from me has a lime green Dart with the stripe on the back but I dont know if its a GT or a Swinger but the same guy also has a 72 Challenger and I love driving past his house to see these cars, I love Mopars.
Very nice Lou! The gentleman that owns it has a lot of Kool info on these rare cars. I remember back in the 80’s seeing a 69 Barracuda M code. It was a fastback.
Wow that's one heck of a buy there nice restoration job nice paint job. Interesting story about it being automatics only and no power steering or power braked. That's one heck of a price of $53.00 for the optional 440 motor.
What a beautiful old Dart! I love the color and the stripe color! Sounded healthy too! Just like new it looked like and the owner was really cool too! Thanks for sharing Lou!
I bought a 69 dart 340 4-speed back in about 1979. Same green color as this one, had no power steering or breaks and the body was pretty beat. It ran like a bat out of hell though. The 69 340 received a hotter cam when it was mated with a 4-speed and you could tell.
I just saw a pristine example of one of these cars just drive by in my neighborhood in Colorado it was a 383 though but absolutely gorgeous never seen one in person but wow !

I think this version of the Dart would be my dream car if I owned a classic Detroit muscle car. I seem to remember spending some time around Ron's car back in the day. Took a look at the car linked below (Super Stock). Remember Sox and Martin's car in the shop. There's just something about those 440s and hemi's that made those cars special.

Lou thanks for going to these car shows for everyone and I remember that when I was 16 there was one of those for sale for 800 dollars in 1978,it was black with white interior. But of course 800 was like 80.000 back then.
That safety sticker on the A pillar @7:02 is sarcastically comical when trying to imagine someone attempting to keep this car moving in a straight line when running a quarter on those factory bias ply tires. Awesome car.
Mr. Norm's in Il had been stuffing big blocks in A bodies since early 67. Some big wig at Chrysler said it couldn't be done. He and his partner drove a Barracuda to Detroit to show them the mods they did in order to get it to fit. Low and behold, Plymouth offered the 67 1/2 Barracuda with the optional 383. For 68, they got the 440 to fit, contacted Chrysler, and for 69 the 440 was offered in Darts and 'Cudas from the factory. While Ma Mopar never offered the big block cars with a 4 speed, Mr Norm did, with a narrowed Dana used in Hemi drag cars. You could order special wheels from him as well, that would accept a 9 inch slick. Mr. Norm called those tuned cars from his dealership, 'scary fast' . In 2015, I saw a real Mr Norm's 69 440 GTS Dart in white on blue. That 1 was an auto, but had the original frame ties added by Mr. Norm still on it. It also had manual frt disc brakes added by that dealer. The owner said that if you floored it off the line, you would be pretty much be guaranteed to spin it out, and face the direction from which you came.
Hi Jeff King, Happy to read you appreciate "the hunt" for the right cars to share on this RUclips Channel :-) You're welcome and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Great video, but this makes my stomach turn. My father had a Dodge dealership in the 60’s. In 1968 I sat down with our Dodge factory representative to special order my fist new car. I had lots of choices, Hemi Coronets, Chargers, etc. Our Dodge rep. kept pushing to a Dart hemi, and I would have bought it, but you had to sign papers that you wouldn’t register it or drive it on the street. I did order a very special Dodge Dart 383, 4 spd. While waiting the car to arrive. I ordered many performance items and they all arrived before the car did. Soon as it came in off the truck I took it in the back shop and started modifying it. Copied the Hemi Darts rear fenders. I worked a lot with Dick Maxwell of the Dodge Ramcharges group. I always thought about installing a high performance 440 but never did. Now seeing this video that I could have purchased a factory 440 dart really makes me mad. There’s a lot more to this story. Thanks for the video.
Hi Doug, I know I've made decisions I wish I could do over. I think everyone has. Dart with a 383 is still cool :-) Thank you for sharing your story, Lou
We have the same body car here in Australia, Valiant 69/70, had the slant 6, later had the 4 litre Hemi 6, the next model 4.3 litre Hemi 6 ( not slant)

Great car. I had a chance to buy one once but it was originally a 383 car with a 4 speed manual but the original motor was long gone and had a 318 with a automatic transmission but still had the GTS badges and tail stripe on it. Sadly I didn't have the money for it.
Seen 1 wrecked in a junk yard southern Michigan in '78...yes it was a real M code '69. Hard smashed in the front...today someone would have restored it. The yard & vehicles are long gone there now.....just a memory

Hey Lou great episode. Awesome Dart. When I was 16 and ready to get my drivers licence there was a guy in my little hometown in the coal regions of Pennsylvania that had a "Swinger" that always caught my eye. So this one brought back some memories even tho it isn't a "Swinger". I guess it was the signature stripe wrapping around the back that did it. Very nice car. What color is this car again? @@grantr5417 Yeah in 1975 i had a 67 Camaro body that i built with a 427/425, 456 gears and a 4 speed so a Yenko clone, that was manual steering and non power brakes but it had front discs so it stopped pretty good even during 110 mph 1/4 mile track runs, turning or parking it was definitely an armstrong workout
@@zxtenn Disc brakes. Luxury haha. I could bring my 440 Cuda down from 100mph, eventually.. and only once. You learn how to parallel park though, the better the first entry, the less work to get it in 👍
@@grantr5417 Yes discs were an option in 67 and actually they were the Corvette 4 piston style known for eventually leaking. Parallel parking was a great arm workout and i had the BORG and BECK pressure plate which was like squatting 350 but the grab was so far superior to the diaphragm clutch. I knew a guy who had an original 440 6 pack 'Cuda' with 4 speed and 430 gears and i think he put in a racer brown cam? His car was MINT red with white vinyl top and interior, shaker good too
This is a truly special high performance vehicle.... A $3900 bottom line sticker for an unairconditioned compact was somewhat pricey back in 69. Also given the unavailability of power options. This car would bring at least $75,000 at the Mecum auctions.
Hi Riverdeepwide, Unfortunately when at a car show, you're going to have sounds I will not have control over. You do the best you can with what you have, and this is the best I can do on this video. Lou
I had a 70 Dodge dart swinger with a slant six I mechanic friend of mine souped it up for me a little he went in and shaved the head put dual exhaust on it and a 4-barrel Holley carburetor after that I got a lot of tickets in a short period of time I was lucky I didn't lose my license it was a screamer for it day I could do the quarter in the low 13th which was pretty good for the slant six I end up selling it to the mechanic that did the work for me
When I was a younger man I had a chance to buy a 1969 dart it had a 426 wedge with a cross ram dual quad motor,I probably wouldn’t be here writing this comment if I had bought it,lol
Lou, great video as always, but now I'm very confused. Until now, I was unsure that Dodge had put in a 440 ci motor in a '69 Dart. I know there were about 80 1969 426 ci HEMI models made, which was code L023. These were put out by Chrysler with a disclaimer that they were only be to used for racing, in the likelihood someone from the general public bought one. However, I do see the original badge for 440 CI on this car, so it makes me wonder if it was a special order and perhaps its a'68? A performance 340 CI was put into the '68 GTS models (like this guy has) but I see no mention of 440 being put into a GTS in '68 or '69. Any thoughts, Lou?
Hi Reed Allyn, Thank you for the kind words on this video. We're in for a treat! This one has the "M Code" so it's correct. Stay tuned as I'll be sharing a "M code" 69 Barracuda AND....the 68 Dart 440 GSS will be coming soon too :-) Lou P.S, Here is the link to one of those 68 Hemi Super Stocks you mentioned too ruclips.net/video/9Asc-6rRPGU/видео.html

A guy up the road from me has a lime green Dart with the stripe on the back but I dont know if its a GT or a Swinger but the same guy also has a 72 Challenger and I love driving past his house to see these cars, I love Mopars.
Hi yavin99, Happy to share this rare treat with you :-) I didn't know about them either, and I find it so fun to learn from the Care Takers, Lou
Awesome find there Lou! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻😍
Hi Duececoupe, Thank you and glad you enjoy this car :-) Lou
Thanks Lou! Just posted a live on my Instagram about this rare A-Body Mopar! 69’ GTS 440 is more rare then a Hemi E-body!!!
Hi PlumCrazy_ TrackPak, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Very nice Lou!
The gentleman that owns it has a lot of Kool info on these rare cars.
I remember back in the 80’s seeing a 69 Barracuda M code. It was a fastback.
Hi drippingglass, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Hmmm, regarding that 69 M Code Barracuda.....stay tuned :-) Lou
Lou Costabile
Can’t wait... 😎
This is very educational as I never knew they made Darts with 440 engines.
Hi Right Lane Hog, Happy to read you learned from this video. I find that so fun to learn from the car Care Takers and I'm learning all the time, Lou
I have its twin same color , also m code .have owned since 1989. Need to be freshened up but still runs great
Wow that's one heck of a buy there nice restoration job nice paint job. Interesting story about it being automatics only and no power steering or power braked. That's one heck of a price of $53.00 for the optional 440 motor.
Hi Pete Medina, Happy to receive a "Wow" from you :-) Lou
What a beautiful old Dart! I love the color and the stripe color! Sounded healthy too! Just like new it looked like and the owner was really cool too! Thanks for sharing Lou!
Hi Steve Flad, High praise for this car :-) You're welcome and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
I bought a 69 dart 340 4-speed back in about 1979. Same green color as this one, had no power steering or breaks and the body was pretty beat. It ran like a bat out of hell though. The 69 340 received a hotter cam when it was mated with a 4-speed and you could tell.
Hi Observant Owl, Sounds like a fun car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Great selection for your video library Lou.....Totally worthy of the Mecum auctions goin' on in Dallas this week!
.
Hi Larry Hawkins, If Mecum was Sponsoring me to come out, I'd be happy to visit Dallas. Sounds fun :-) Lou
It's both your style and your knowledge that brings me back to your reviews. You have quite a few fans up here in Vermont if you're ever up this way :)
Hi Thomas Hill, Appreciate the kind words :-) If there's a great car show in VT & the Show Promoter is interested in having me come up, have them get a hold of me (www.MyCarStoryWithLou.com) & we'll see if we can work it out & get it on my schedule. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
I-264 Signet 2 door the Slant six I love the car thanks Lou for your service have a great day thank you
HI George, Happy to read you enjoy this one :-) Hope you have a great day too and you're welcome, Lou
Lou thanks for going to these car shows for everyone and I remember that when I was 16 there was one of those for sale for 800 dollars in 1978,it was black with white interior.
But of course 800 was like 80.000 back then.
Hi Gary Mckee, My pleasure sharing with you :-) Happy to read this car brings back good memories for you, Lou
Hey Lou. Beautiful looking Dart GTS. This was before I was born. I was born in 1973. Still, I remember cars like this from when I was growing up. :)
Hey Jason, Happy to read this car is beautiful to you, and it brings back memories :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
That safety sticker on the A pillar @7:02 is sarcastically comical when trying to imagine someone attempting to keep this car moving in a straight line when running a quarter on those factory bias ply tires. Awesome car.
Hi Freedomquest08, I like your attention to details :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
HI Adam Trombino, Thank you for viewing and sharing. Regarding that Mr Norm "GSS" Dart with a 440 & the 69 Cuda M Code 440.....stay tuned :-) Lou
What a beautiful dart thanks for sharing
Hi Dartdude Murray, Happy to read you enjoy this Dart :-) You're welcome, Lou

Matchless a classic car.
Nice :-)
That's an amazing car very good find Lou
Hi Joe L, Happy to read you appreciate this find :-) Glad to share this one with you, Lou
Louis
My dad had a 71 dart swinger same color but it sure didn't sound like this one.
I think the 225 Slant Six was the reason.
Hi C Moore, Happy to read this one reminds you of your Dad's 71 Dart. Sure the slant 6 might not sound of perform exactly like the 440 :-) Lou
Beautiful gem awesome video
High praise for this gem / video :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing.
Keep up the Great Work Lou.. Awesome..
Hi AtZero, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Thank you for viewing, and glad you're along for the ride, Lou
We have the same body car here in Australia, Valiant 69/70, had the slant 6, later had the 4 litre Hemi 6, the next model 4.3 litre Hemi 6 ( not slant)
Hi Jim Clarke, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. I appreciate that as I did not know that, Lou
Had a 69' Gt same colors 318cu when back in 76' when I was 19yo, sure with I had another

Hi John, Happy to read "This is a beautiful car" :-) Glad to read you have a fun car too, Lou
There was also a GSS DART with a 440 google it.
Grand Spaulding.
Hi Greg Breeze, I understand there are now only 11 of those GSS Darts left. However.....Stay tuned :-) Lou
Lou you need to start signing these cars too.
Hi Hans Gruber, You mean like my autograph? Lou
@@loucostabile Absolutely Lou, lol!
Honored to read that. Well.....you never know, maybe :-)
I had a 68 dart but it only had a slant six in it. Even with the slant six it was my favorite car. I'd love to find another one with a 340 in it.
Hi James Smith, Sounds like you had a fun car too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi Lou & Richard, cool ride, I remember this unique Dodge body style. I had friends in High School who had this body style car, The back glass always gave this car away.
Lou: I was at the Woodward Dream Cruise yesterday looking for you. Ferndale, Michigan 😎
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Hi trainroomgary, Happy to read this car / video brings back memories of Friends in High School :-) I'll have to come there sometime, however yesterday I was videoing a 1958 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible Tri-Power, so stay tuned for that one, Lou
Lou, you'll need to get a microphone for your subjects when there's background noise like this - I can hardly hear his story. Otherwise, keep up the good work :@)
Hi bandagefreak, Looking forward to your support, here is the link to my Patreon account to help with equipment, Thank you, Lou www.patreon.com/MyCarStoryWithLou
bandagefreak THE most important part of video is audio.
Great car. I had a chance to buy one once but it was originally a 383 car with a 4 speed manual but the original motor was long gone and had a 318 with a automatic transmission but still had the GTS badges and tail stripe on it. Sadly I didn't have the money for it.
Hi PlymouthDuster 225, Happy to read this one brings back memories of the one you remember :-) Lou
Seen 1 wrecked in a junk yard southern Michigan in '78...yes it was a real M code '69. Hard smashed in the front...today someone would have restored it. The yard & vehicles are long gone there now.....just a memory

High praise for the looks of this car :-)
That is a really nice car.👍👍
Hi Rick B. Happy to read you think this car is nice :-) Lou
I have forgotten while I've been writing this comment. 😉 lol Great video buddy! Keep em coming. Love your channel !
Hey Story Teller, High praise on this episode! Happy to read this Green Mean Machine brings back memories of the Swinger in PA :-) Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
My stepfather had a '69 GTS with a 340/four barrel/automatic. Sweet car.
Hi Edward Young, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Stepfathers car :-) Lou

DRUM BRAKES MOST LIKELY===SCARY TO STOP WITH A 440 UNDER THE HOOD--I REMEMBER MANNIX USED TO DRIVE I THINK A 383 ON HIS SHOW
Thank you for viewing and sharing your memories :-)
Non-powered drums all around and Armstrong steering were the only way they came
@@grantr5417 Yeah in 1975 i had a 67 Camaro body that i built with a 427/425, 456 gears and a 4 speed so a Yenko clone, that was manual steering and non power brakes but it had front discs so it stopped pretty good even during 110 mph 1/4 mile track runs, turning or parking it was definitely an armstrong workout
His car was MINT red with white vinyl top and interior, shaker good too
There were no 4-speed, M-Code, A-Body cars, because Chrysler said 4-speed shifts would tear the rear ends out of the cars.
Hi Randy, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou
A 68 or 69 dart is my dream muscle car
Hi Tom Cassidy, Happy to read this is a "dream car" for you :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
This is a truly special high performance vehicle.... A $3900 bottom line sticker for an unairconditioned compact was somewhat pricey back in 69. Also given the unavailability of power options. This car would bring at least $75,000 at the Mecum auctions.
Hi Larry Hawkins, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) Lou
Beautiful this car is absolutely beautiful ther is no better than this
High praise :-)
Just amazing!

Beautiful little GTS there.
Lou it's impossible to hear much of the dialogue, could you do a voice over or subtitles?
Hi Riverdeepwide, Unfortunately when at a car show, you're going to have sounds I will not have control over. You do the best you can with what you have, and this is the best I can do on this video. Lou
Wow! I did not know they put a 440 in a Dart?
Hi Hotwheels66, Glad to share this video link with you too :-) Enjoy! Lou ruclips.net/video/zWj81QHzooY/видео.html
I had a 70 Dodge dart swinger with a slant six I mechanic friend of mine souped it up for me a little he went in and shaved the head put dual exhaust on it and a 4-barrel Holley carburetor after that I got a lot of tickets in a short period of time I was lucky I didn't lose my license it was a screamer for it day I could do the quarter in the low 13th which was pretty good for the slant six I end up selling it to the mechanic that did the work for me
Hi alton wren, Happy to read this car / video brings back memories of your 70 Dart :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your story, Lou
my brother has a 440 m code dart and he told me all 440 darts have a A13 code in the fender tag that means 440 package? this one does not ummm
Hi Rebecca, Happy to read your Brother has one. Hmmm, not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge, Lou
my new favorite!
Glad to read this car is a Winner for you :-)
When I was a younger man I had a chance to buy a 1969 dart it had a 426 wedge with a cross ram dual quad motor,I probably wouldn’t be here writing this comment if I had bought it,lol
Hi Robby Turbo, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the one you remember :-) Lou
I don't know if it's the lighting or what, but this GTS doesn't seem to have the blacked-out front grille that ALL '69 GTS's had. Am I correct?
I'm not sure either.
what a sexy interior ...WOW
Nice :-)
Great Car. Great Video
HI Will Scott, Win / Win :-) Lou
Dealers would ship the cars to Mr norm in Chicago and do the conversion
Only Two things you need to know about this Dart Look where your going and Keep it pointed in the right direction I drove one of these after I tuned it up in 1970 at a dealer in Norwalk CA where I was was working and about and about 10 miles from Saddleback Dodge. the ROAD test Was Bad ass, It could have been this car every time I punched it it went sideways LOL
Hi James, Solid advice :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and I hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you enjoy, Lou
My Dad bought a 69' cuda 440. I tt was orange & black with the lettering 440 cuda' on the front frender. I think they only made about 500 of those made.
