- Automatic Identification System information shows you where boats are in relation to your position. It can be used on its own but most often it is an overlay on your boat's chartplotter. Since AIS information is transmitted over VHF frequencies, it is not affected by mountains or islands. And, unlike radar, AIS can "see" around corners. Learn how to apply for an MMSI number and why hailing a particular ship over VHF can be simplified. Jeff Cote, author of the monthly "Tech Talk" column in Pacific Yachting Magazine, will discuss how adding AIS to your existing electronics set up may not be as difficult as you think.

I have an AIS receiver (fed into a Chartplotter) and the false signals are really a distraction. I look forward to the day when alarms are more discerning. For instance, with a busy anchorage next to a harbour entrance, you get unhelpful warnings from small boats at anchor which necessitates switching off the alarm, such that you might miss a large ship underway. I would love to be able to instruct my AIS to alarm only if the potential collision is with a large vessel under way.

Could you please comment on the use of a splitter (either separate or integrated with the transponder)? Early Class B transponders used to transmit every 30 seconds (and newer ones are offering a greater frequency) but what happens when that data transmission coincides with use of the VHF radio? Does the splitter prioritise voice communication (on receive, transmit, or both)? Do i risk the VHF radio picking up the transmission of the AIS data package (and drowning out the incoming voice communication)? I ask as i am upgrading from AIS receive only to a transponder and want to use the mast head antenna. Obviously, for safety purposes, VHF voice needs to have priority.
Good question, but i'm not certain of the answer. I think the VHF has priority over the AIS.
@@PacificYachtSystems I have begun to suspect that it may be a non issue as: (i) the transmitted AIS data burst is so brief (ms or less) that it is barely noticeable on voice and/or (ii) voice transmissions are at a different frequency (channel). Either way, I have been reading through various AIS transponder manuals and the subject never seems to get mentioned, so maybe the manufacturer's regard it as a non-issue?
Note, you cannot use a higher than a 3db antenna for an AIS transceiver

Hi I have a GARMIN 72H hand held GPS, I've been offered a NASA AiS radar is it possible to connect the two together using the GARMIN CABLE and still not only see all vessels around as on the nasa ais, but still use the GARMIN hand held as normal when connected together please as the information would really help me , ps great video very helpful I always follow your videos, thanks for your help. Hi Terry, don't think the handheld Garmin 72H GPS can show AIS targets.
