  • Join us as we visit Rijeka - a major port city and the cultural center of western Croatia!
Rijeka is the third largest city of Croatia and is known as a gateway to the beautiful beaches of the surrounding islands. It is a major industrial and commercial city on Kvarner Bay in the northern Adriatic Sea. Most people speed through en route to the islands or Dalmatia, but those who pause will discover charm, culture, good nightlife and intriguing festivals such as Croatia’s most colorful carnival.
When we picked up our car rental in the capital Zagreb, the guys at the desk told us that we must visit the region of Istria. When they showed us where it was on the map, we found out it was in the same area as Rijeka that we were planning to visit!
After a quick 2 hour drive from Zagreb we reached the city and took a tour of the beautiful city centre at night. Then we checked into a boutique Bed & Breakfast called Engine Rooms. It was in a great location only 15 minutes away from the port and Trsat Castle by foot.
The next day we explored the 13th-century Trsat Castle, perched high on a hill overlooking all of Rijeka. It felt like we were in Italy! The castle, port, and the whole city were so ancient and we enjoyed the most magnificent views.
Next to the castle is The Church of Our Lady of Trsat. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Croatia, attracting some 300,000 visitors a year. According to legend, angels transferred the Nazareth Tabernacle to Trsat in May 1291. It remained there until December 1294 when, according to legend, angels transferred it to Loreto, Italy.
In the old town we also went to see the underground pedestrian tunnel called TunelRi built during WWII. The 330-metre long structure was built by the Italian army between 1939 and 1942, providing refuge from aerial bombings to citizens of Rijeka. The entrances had been sealed for decades, until 2017 when the tunnel was restored and ceremoniously reopened. Entrances to the tunnel are next to St. Vitus Cathedral and the Dolac Primary School.
There is a bridge near Rijeka that connects the mainland to the island of Krk. We did not miss the opportunity to visit and discover some of the beautiful coastal towns that include Baska, Vrbnik, Punat, Malinska, Njivice, Omisalj, Silo, Krk and Brzac village.
On the island's southern coast, we really enjoyed exploring the fortified city of Krk and the Frankopan Castle. The city is ancient, being among the oldest in the Adriatic Sea, and is entered through one of four doors that lead to the main square called Kamplin. With so much to see and do on the island we recommend staying for a few days!
Here is an interesting thing about Rijeka - almost 20 thousand people speak an ancient dialect of the Venetian language called Fiuman.
Enjoy the video and let us know where you're watching from!

Venice newer owned Rijeka . Veneziani only burned the town in 1426. That year Habsburger got it from other noble family , and this is how Venice protested . By the way , Trsat , that castle was saved . It is nice to see how foreign family sees my city .

“While Fiume never has formed a part of [modern] Italy, it has remained Italian ever since its foundation 1,100 years ago. Rising on the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Tarsica destroyed by Charlemagne in 800, it never once has lost its pure Italian character. This is attested by all its artistic monuments and intellectual life, by all the acts of its administrative and business life, which with its language, laws and habits have preserved its complete Italianism in every age of its existence. ... On all maps, in all treaties, in all laws, in all protocols, Fiume always has been called Fiume, the Italian word for river... The fact that Fiume, while not belonging to Italy, has remained wholly Italian for over a thousand years, is the strongest proof which could be adduced to my mind, that it is an Italian city. In the political and business life of Fiume, the Croats always have been looked upon as strangers.”
-Henry Isham Hazelton, Fiume: The Superlatively Italian City, 1919

Rijeka wasn't founded by the Venetians, and neither was the Trsat castle built by them, they were never even a part of Venetian Republic, except of course for a few years when Rijeka was ransacked by the Venetians in 1500s.

“It is not Italy which demands Fiume, but Fiume which demands annexation to Italy for the protection of its own interests, and to meet the wishes of its citizens, composed for the greater part of Italians, as the following graphic statistics will show. Even before the Italian troops entered the city, the National Council of Fiume, in an extraordinary session held on October 30, 1918, voted voluntarily for the annexation of the city to the kingdom of Italy. ... On April 18, 1919, Fiume voted a second time by plebiscite to be united to the kingdom of Italy. The commerce bodies, educational associations and sporting interests were unanimous in the desire. The city sent seventy odd telegrams to the Peace Conference in Paris, asking for the unconditional annexation of Fiume to Italy.”
-Henry Isham Hazelton, Fiume: The Superlatively Italian City, 1919
“Confusion of tongues is, in fact, constant at Fiume. The majority of the population is really Italian in race and language...”
-Harriet Waters Peston, Some Reminiscences of Eastern Europe, The Atlantic Monthly, Volume 76, 1895
“...the lower basin of the Isonzo, Gorizia, Trieste, Parenzo, Pola, and all the towns of maritime Istria are Italian, and the Italianissimi of Trieste are consequently justified in aspiring to a union with Italy. Fiume, on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Quarnero, is likewise Italian, whilst in Zara, Spalato, and other towns of Dalmatia the Italians are in a majority.”
-Élisée Reclus, The Earth and Its Inhabitants: The Universal Geography, Volume 3, 1878
“She [Italy] wants to unite all her children under one roof. Hence she wants the city of Fiume, of whose 60,000 population, so a Fiuman municipal official told me, two-thirds are Italian, a sixth Slav, and the remaining sixth mixed. To confirm this preponderance, I walked everywhere in the city yesterday, specially in the sparsely settled quarters, where at least the little children would not be withheld from speaking their mother tongue. Yet everywhere I heard only Italian. I was well prepared, therefore, for my official's conclusion: 'As between Italians and Croats there is no question as to where the city's political control should be. It should be with the Italians.' ...the Entente Allies would deny justice to Italy unless she had Fiume too.”
-Elbert Francis Baldwin, The Question of Fiume, The Outlook, Volume 122, 1919

Rijeka is on Kvarner part of Primorsko Goranska županija County it was never part of Istria it was occupied for a time by Italian fascist but that is it. Btw when they occupied
the city they started to change Croatian names to Italian and suppres Croatian language trough school sistem that is why you have so much Italian names in Rijeka they are not Italian at all
