On this program we observe awesome Summer action on the LIRR Montauk Branch at various locations including West Islip, Brightwaters, Islip, Great River, Oakdale, and Sayville.
Witness the LIRR fleet of GP38-2’s blasting by at track speed with their long trains from the Hamptons/Montauk. These engines were the pride of the passenger fleet for over 20 years and were revered by engineers. Indeed the GP38-2’s are among the finest EMD locomotives ever built, and they are still running on many railroads including this one, but currently as freight units.
Also witness the eclectic fleet of power cars such as FA, MP15, and F units. You will hear K5LA horns primarily with a couple of P5 horns for good measure. See sparks fly from the brakes, and a stuck horn on Alco FA power car.
Shot by legendary LIRR videographer Tim Hosey who has captured a great many scenes of the Long Island Railroad in this golden era of the 1990s and is still capturing trains on this railroad today.

I grew up next to the Sayville station in the 80's. My Son would love this.
I remember seeing gp38s and Alcos at Islip with my grandfather.
I thought the narrator sounded like a younger version of Retired Railfan, now I know, ha ha. Great video!
This is old school, was 10 years old in 97
Back in the early 80s, I rode the Montauk branch to Speonk then xferred to another train to Hampton Bays where I was living at the time.. if I missed the last train to H.B... I ended up walking. sometimes there was no trains past Speonk late at night. rode the branch one time in a bad snowstorm.. that was interesting.. I give props to the crews who worked in that..
I used to see these diesels and coaches like that when I was little
I was a baby at this time and never got to really see or appreciate these diesel legends on the LIRR.
They are bringing the old trains back :lol:. Because of supply chain issues they are going to back that stock for the East side access.

@@alb12345672 I’ve been researching. It looks like just the Budd M3 EMUs are being returned to service. I was referring to the diesel locos like these old F7s.
This road had a great variety of motive power! And the locos were nice and grungy. Not that practical but heavily weathered engines are a sign of hardworking engines.

@@Pensyfan19 As of March 12th, 2022, the trackless trollies are no longer in service with MBTA due to various roadway projects that last for five years, right?

Before The DE30ACS And DM30ACS Existed
They look like RVs on rails and I find them to be very uninteresting The LIRR went from having a nice variety of cool equipment to watch roll by to a ho hum same as everything rolling by. Now I understand that the old Geeps and MP15ACS were aging well past their expiration dates but their replacements could have been just as varied as they were. Just saying

Were the outer doors power operated or manual on the coaches? How come some trains are lacking a HEP pack
Hey it’s Retired Railran! Man those Alco units seem pretty old for even ‘97.
The old diesels were Beasts in the snow. I remember the Blizzard in January 1996 when these Diesels were attached to the M-3's and were pulling then since the third rails were buried over. Everyone had to get to work, no working from home in those days.
I miss riding between cars on the diesels during spring/summer. The breeze, the smell of honeysuckle....just the best as a youth.
I boarded the train at Patchogue that morning around 5:30 (only passenger on the train), we went about 5 minutes then got stuck at Sayville interlocking for a half hour. Two employees got out with shovels and we were able to proceed. Made all local stops to Lynbrook (five coaches), then Jamaica. Were told no service west of Jay Tower, so we used E/F subway. But we did make it. Good job LIRR!
This looks more like 1987. The diesels and double deckers were in service by the mid 90s.

3:15 Why to this day the LIRR didn’t use ditch lights like Metra, GO Transit, MBTA, Amtrak and Metro North?
Was this an old video or do they run old rolling stock on the Montauk branch? This looks like it was recorded in the late 50s early 60s.
Was #167 the only engine on the LIRR roster that had alternating ditch lights?
Montauk is not electrified is it?????
Anyone seen such DIRTY, FILTHY coaches?
Seems like when they made the decision to get the new bilevels, that pretty much ended the maintenance/cleaning of the existing equipment.

0:41 Classic LIRR!! When they used MP15AC’s and GP38’s to pull passenger cars. I also love how dirty the locomotives and passenger cars were back then. I miss the old LIRR trains. Back in the 70s and 80’s my dad worked for the LIRR he would take me up in the locomotives. Good times!
The dirt was the only thing holding them together at this time 😂
