    I have been saying this for a long time. If we stop seeing Soca as carnival music and see it as global music and treat it as such, only then Soca will be global. It starts with the radio stations, there is no reason why after carnival is over Hip hop, Dance Hall and Reggae should be played more than Soca music. Soca should be played year round.

      What is inspiring about this - watch his hybrid will get this so called grammy and trinidadians will be left in bewilderment and wonderment. Shaggy is the one who at this stage in his life decides that he nerds another HYBRID and chose your soca. Why didn't he trh to "hybrid" reggae. I don't think so. Do your critical thinking in this 21st century. Our culture and ICONS are the Greatest. We do not need an OUTSIDER to tell us so. I don't care how much TORO CHARGE.

    Why is it we (the rest of the world) have to accept Americans culture the way it is but the Americans never accept other countries culture for what it is. Yes, I understand America is a very powerful and influencial country, but to water down our culture just to please or have it accepted by Americans is wrong. Maybe artist need to forget about "mainstream" America and market their craft to the rest of the world who will accept our music as is.

    This interview was a reflection of the over simplification of the issues that colonized and indigenous people have faced throughout the diaspora. I know this was about highlighting Shaggy's presence in TnT for carnival, but because the interviewer chose to ask Shaggy questions as though he is an authority on the direction of soca music, the artists and those who live, breath, and enjoy it everyday...the door has been opened. When the Jamaican artist Spice was snubbed at the Grammy's for a group of white "reggae " artists that no one ever heard of, where was the outrage? When a group from Ireland recently won a Grammy for Traditional Irish music did anyone ask them to make it "hybrid" and therefore more palatable to western tastes? Why is it that on SiriusXM radio Bob Marley's radio station is under the "Rock" category right after the "Metal" music and not under "World Music" ? Because Caucasians outside of Jamaica have decided that Bob Marley belongs to them. Burna Boy did not receive worldwide fame because he made his music more palatable but because he continued what his Godfather Fela Kuti started and demanded to be heard and accepted as himself. With that said, I respect Shaggy and all that he has achieved. And in conclusion I can name many artists from our sweet 🇹🇹 that are ready to be superstars on any stage, at anytime, and anywhere around the world! ❤️🇹🇹❤️🇹🇹

    • @joegrinefine
      @joegrinefine Год назад +3

      There was outrage in Jamaica tho when the American band did win best reggae album and conversations were afloat as to what needed to be done in an attempt to arrest the situation….And with dancehall is the same thing….Shaggy is correct when referencing the hybrid experience of his and many other dancehall acts who became more widespread known and successful due to fusion work…..From Shabba Ranks,Shaggy himself included,Beenie,Bounti,etc…….Even our very own Machel Montano,the flag-bearer for soca locally is doing the very said thing YEARS NOW,to gain greater traction internationally…..Bunji Garlin won both a Soul Train and MTV award due to his “DIFFERENTOLOGY” offering due to the very hybrid/fusion experience…..And had that very song aired in a American prime-time show as a result.
      So Shaggy’s contribution does hold merit,based on the empirical evidence presented🎯💯

    Ignorance is a lack of knowledge. Some people in these comments need to embrace unity. Jamaican music is global because it has always progressed. There are many genres in JA music. The Caribbean produces music that could be global and they will be. Collaboration does not mean loosing culture! Think beyond your back catalogue and island 🇭🇹 🇧🇧 🇬🇾 🇱🇨 St kitts etc... all produce global music. Jamaica and Trinidad are helping the Caribbean and diaspora to retain our cultures. I live in London. We fete and skinout too.

    Trinidad and Tobago's Soca is already Worldwide. Why does he want to reinvent it. I am not a skeptic but this has a strange vibe like there is a throwing out of words to fool folks. Trinidadians are quick to embrace everybody without doing their research and nit seeing things for what they are. Why are WE not having these conversations with ourselves? We have so many folks who have shifted our culture globally- who invited him to be the ONE TO COME WITH THE HYBRID to change our cultural music. Read through those lines people.
