- Weezer is often the laughing stock of the music world and considered a meme to everyone else, but they weren't always. However, that doesn't mean they started off on the right foot. Find out why even their debut Blue album got them into hot water decades before Raditude.

Since when has weezer had a bad reputation? Literally never heard someone complain about them before. I think you’re just making it up 😂
@@sanguine2552I hear complaints about half the time they’re brought up
It don't work, the link
Ahh no, The Blue Album was not Weezer's First Album. What about Pinkerton? I can name a few others. If they're so bad then why do other musicians want to perform with them? So they $0LD out and did a bunch of cover tunes... The boys are still getting a paycheck.
People have been labelling artists they don't like "industry plants" for as long as there's been an industry
or maybe they’ve been labeling industry plants as industry plants because that’s what they are? not liking the artist because the music is bad and not liking the artist because they are not simply an artist for the sake of being an artist are not mutually exclusive, dipshit
And sometimes it's legitimate, other times not. The video didn't really answer whether or not Weezer were one. Some bands hit it off big on their first album.
@@arvaakuka8568@Arvaa Kuka I mean does it really matter as long as their music is good and people like them? I'm not a Weezer fan but I've always wondered what is up with people's hate towards "the industry" and successful people in it.
@@michaelrivera8923 I don't have a good answer to that question. There's many ethical and artistic layers that go into this. What is the purpose of art? Who deserves success? Is the music industry a zero sum game where artists are fighting for streaming numbers against each other? All these questions are related to the industry plant debate. Personally, if I like music I will listen to it, but sometimes the backstory of the musician or group can influence my enjoyability quite a bit.
@@arvaakuka8568 this topic is probably deeper than I thought. Like you I just listen to what I like but I don't usually think about an artist's background or story. The only artist I actively follow started independent and later signed with a big label and this might be controversial but I feel their music has only gotten better since. Be that because they have more experience or because they have access to better equipment and better ears on it like sound engineers and music producers I don't know. I just know you can tell a pretty noticeable difference before and after signing. I don't think being signed should matter as long as they are making what they want.

Weezer literally sounds completely different from the Pixies
Yeah, The only similarities between Weezer and The Pixies is the era and quantity of band members.
Pixies are alternative rock and created a whole scene. They literally influenced a whole generation to make music. I wouldn't say they are completely different when they use the same formula. Calm verses then when it comes to the chorus the lead singer starts belting and the band plays a harder rift. Almost every alternative band had this formula in the late 90s mid 2000s. I for one enjoy it. It's okay to be inspired by your favorite artists.
Weezer is the nerdiest music ever and then Pixies is like “I AM UN CHIEN ANDALOUSIA”
They sound NOTHING like the Pixies.
Lol come on, I love Weezer, one of my top 10 bands but they absolutely ripped off the Pixies. TWHTALMH is the same song as Gigantic. The Gigantic baseline is literally River’s singing melody in the song. But every great artist steals, especially in their younger years, and usually not even consciously. Nirvana bit the Pixies, Radiohead essentially stole Creep and Led Zepellin outright knowingly stole a ton of their hits from old folk songs. Still all incredible bands though.
I don’t hate weezer I hate the fact their fans can’t stfu about how much they love weezer
7 top ten singles, 15 albums released and counting as well as 9 EP’s and two compilation albums. For whatever bad reputation they have, they’ve sure been massively successful!
This video is saying that THAT'S the exact reason they got hate, cause they came out of nowhere and boom success right off the bat basically
Boy two of their albums are good though. Matt sharp was instrumental to their sound.
sounds like a pop band. the greatest bands didn't have top singles. that's for teenagers
Rivers is a great songwriter. Especially back then. That's why they had immediate success. Unfortunately you have a lot of gatekeepers who just hate to hate
Yeah but they only have a handful of songs that are good in my opinion
STP is absolutely awesome.

They're very mediocre. Audioslave is strictly better.
@@Repetoire and soundgarden is better than audioslave
I guess the issue with them is when all the grunge bands had their own distinct sound that set each other apart from one another, STP just went around emulating everyone else's sound in a much less exciting way and never developed their own. Ive never understood why you'd want to voluntarily listen to their Pearl Jam rip off song Plush when you can just, y'know, listen to Pearl Jam
Love Weezer. They never cared what anyone thought anyway, they actually have a ton of diverse sounding songs/albums, and over all have put out a ton of music. Great band

The Monkees where also talented musicians who eventually got to write their own music and even played it in the show. But soon after their show was cancelled. Corporate wanted a new band they could completely control. Fun fact. Weezer actually helped write one of my favorite songs on the Monkees 2016 album “Good Times!” The song is “She makes me laugh” The Monkees have fought for their recognition for a long time, and still are fighting to enter the rock and roll hall of fame. I’m sure Weezer has had a similar fight due to that criticism. It’s weird because we very much live in a world where most people don’t write their own music anymore and everyone is fine with the modern bands doing it. But you mention the Monkees and people throw a hissy fit.
I'm 29 and literally have never thought of Weezer having a bad rep. I liked them for a little while when I was younger, not so much into them now, but I would never say they're a bad band. I remember even my parents liked Beverly Hills when it came out and they were pushing 40 at the time.
Woah woah woah- we don't tolerate hate against the Monkees. They were made to showcase what would become the music video, and other advancements in visual arts infused with music, just as much as they were made to simply cash in on the Beatles-esque music craze of the 1960's. Not only that, but they were still hired as an actual band, who always played their own concerts in the 60's, and recorded their own playing from their third album onwards... The Monkees are the exemption to the "manufactured boy band" archetype. That'd be more like The Dave Clark Five, if you want a real manufactured band purely for money. If anything, The Monkees was rock history's Pinocchio. They were supposed to be fake and disposable, but almost immediately forced themselves into doing bigger and better things than they were supposed to do. Also, they were seen as peers by The Beatles, Cream, and The Rolling Stones. The biggest artists and groups of the 60's respected The Monkees as an invention and a group. Hell, Frank Zappa even liked them enough to where he made a couple cameos in their show and movie. That's how you know they're good.
Rip frank your dead right my man
I just made a comment about how the Monkees fought to play their one music on the show.

Pinkerton. That was their first album. And it is phenomenal!

I’ve literally never heard anyone hate on Weezer like what
in 7 Buddy Holly they'll sing "what's with these homies dissing our band" and you'd think it'd be to the buddy holly melody but nope! flintstones
I will never understand how someone can be like a music fan and simultaneously immediately hate any band or artist that gets popular or successful.
If you hate Weezer you probably remind everyone at parties that you don't drink
No you probably remind everyone you do
@@bluecheesewithwings2105 Blue cheese has mold in it
One of the best bands to come from the 90's. They are so good that theybare still putting out albums and touring to this day. Not many of those other bands mentioned can say that. I just saw them this summer at the forest hills tennis stadium and they sounded amazing! One of the best shows i saw this summer, along with metallica and pantera at giant stadium of course
Weezer is so stupid, and I love it.
No, they fell from grace by writing music for teenagers well into their 40s
Yeah, high school is weird because you're 40
yup. After Pinkerton it's all downhill
I have literally never heard anyone say a negative thing about Weezer in my life. They’re inoffensive and memorable. What more could you want from a band?
Everyone I knew as a teen HATED Weezer, but had one of their albums hidden at home they would listen to and not tell anyone.
