  • On this quick video, we are resetting the BIOS / CMOS on a Toshiba Satellite P580 by shorting out the CMOS Jumpers. This can solve the fault of black screen. When the lights and fans come on but nothing on the display. This repair method also works with other makes and models.

This worked for me with a Lenovo laptop G50-80. It was TOTALLY DEAD. No response at all: no fan, no beeps. (Except for charging LED and power LED upon pressing the start button.) So I pulled the RTC battery, main battery, and RAM. Searched and found the JCMOS jumper pads and shorted them for 15 seconds, popped in a fresh CR2032, inserted the main battery and RAM, plugged in the power plug, pressed the power button and PRESTO, the dead laptop booted up normally!!! Thank you for your support! I will look like a wizard to my client.

I tried every video and this is the only solution that fixed the problem. Thanks for not letting me take a trip to the service center.

CMOS Reset jumpers are literally not there? Where on the Mobo are the Jumpers located? Toshiba Satellite L50-B-235

I have the a Toshiba Satellite C50D B-12C the "JCMOS" poles were not under a sticker under the RAM but off to the side next to the RAM. I tried everything but still nothing, the lights come on, the Hard Drive spins but the screen stays black even after 3 or 4 minutes of tapping "F2" is there any other last ditch things to try? Thanks.

Don't know if this will help, but what I did was leave the ram out, plug in the ac adapter then power on and then short the jcmos. Laptop immediately shut off. I did this twice, then inserted ram and powered on and bios lock was gone.

I have a similar problem on my Toshiba Satellite. But there are no jumper points under that sticker.
What happened to mine is this, I had set the bios to initiate the extern monitor first, me being stupid. Then, years later, I think something overheated, and the vga slot is fuzz now. Meaning, when I boot the laptop, I have black screen all the way up until windows is booted.
So, if i reboot, I can still hit the F2, and I am pretty sure it goes into BIOS, but still black screen.
Okay so then I have read I can press F9 to reset to default. But then after that, I need to know which keys to press to get it to accept that command, and which to then press to exit while saving it all.
Can someone help me through doing that blind please?

Just need to know the keys and in which order to do them. It is this laptop I am on, so I can't read and do it at the same time. Oh and by the way, I have tried the HWsetup utility, nothing happens what ever I do in that program, like it doesn't connect to the bios.

If you are working this blind Mike (as in black screen going through the motions) it'll be F2 to get into BIOS. Followed by F9 and Enter to set defaults. To Save & Exit F10 (& sometimes followed by Enter). Finally CTRL, ALT, DEL to reboot with new settings. There will be a BIOS reset jumper on the board. It may require removing the board. Good luck.

Do you have any advice if you've booted the laptop from USB to safe mode, the blue windows logo comes up but then a black screen!

Hopefully can help. What actual problems are you having? Is Windows refusing to complete it's boot up?

@@Computroon - Toshiba Logo loop - stuck. Restart - preparing automatic recovery loop.
      - Change from UEFI to CSM, no bootable drive - Insert boot disk and press any key.. Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series - PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable. PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM
      - Insert disk, nothing happens
Boot from USB - Loading - Blue Windows Logo, spinning circles - THEN BLACK SCREEN 😭
I can hear the drive kicking in but no joy. But the light on the numb lock key flicks off for a few seconds then back on again.
      - I will try to connect to another monitor if I can, the laptop was not recognised on the projector.

@@YuGMas OK sounds like partition that has Windows has a fault, will most likely need complete format. If you have any important docs on there you'll need to lift the drive out and backup on another machine. On another computer, download latest version of W10. Google "Windows Media Creation Tool" and take it from there. Reset BIOS to default, boot to USB and delete all partitions and install fresh copy of Windows. (The Realtek boot option that you are seeing is the network adapter). The partition that Windows is on has collapsed or developed a fault. Let me know how you get on.

@@Computroon No other machines in the house, so it looks like I'll have to take it to a shop to do the data recovery. And possible repair. Not sure how much that will cost. If it's any cheaper, I'll source the parts and get them to do the technical stuff. 😶 If there is no issue with the current hard drive I'll keep it in but still back it up with a SSD just in case. 👌

    • @Computroon

Use a light and a magnifier Jared. There will be a reset somewhere by shorting 2 contact pins together. Be careful though as this can cause real damage to your computer if you short the wrong pins.

will this work on HP Probook 6470b...? i want to reset BIOS because its locked with password & i dont know the password

    • @Computroon
      @Computroon  3 года назад

Hi B P. Be careful if you have data on the system. BIOS protected systems running Windows Pro may encrypt the drive. On pro systems, BIOS passwords give clients hardware level protection. Did you set the password yourself or was it done by a system administrator? I'm going to suggest that shorting the BIOS for this - isn't going to solve the problem. No harm in removing, then reinstating the CMOS battery.
