  • In this episode at the modern image layout New Junction, we find our selves back at the NEC where we manage to catch up with David from Dean Park Station.
    In what kept me up the nights before with nerves about meeting ones Railway heros turned out to be a pointless waste of sleep. David as you'll see was extremely gracious and and absolute pleasure to talk to, I could have spent all day chatting!

    Really interesting discussion, and two great interviews. As a younger guy myself, weirdly the fact I was never around to experience steam is what makes it more appealing to model than what I can already see today. I must admit though the more modern stuff is lacking, so perhaps things will balance out a bit and we can have the best of both worlds.

    I myself am only 17 and have been in the hobby for as long as I can remember and your spot on about it's what you grew up with what inspires you. Steam for us younger ones is nothing as we simply weren't around to see the steam era. It is all about the vibrant liveries which come with modern diesels and dmus. You model what you know and love and the end of the day. Mines midland mainline with the hsts and various dmus from the 2000's as that is what first sparked me off

      ironically for me the manufacturers have bought out some of my locos that I would like to see. I model the East Midlands region and real track have bought out the 156 in emt and Bachmann finally seem to be producing the 158. But the prices are so high! Its a shame but its a business they run at the end of the day. @@NewJunction

    Hi Richard
    What a refreshing conversation with Dave Watson, you both commented on the most annoying points single modeller who saves and build there layouts bit by bit are having. I am now retired and have collected over 60 locos over many years, most have never been out of there boxes, as I have had no were to build a layout.My new layout room is taking shape it just want plastering so I will be hopefully up and running soon.
    kind regards

    Good to see the two people who have provided me with so much inspiration since I rediscovered the hobby. Lots of great constructive/sensible comments made regarding the manufacturers. The hobby is so expensive now for the average modeller. I love steam, but I grew up with BR blue DMUs & locos - now is an exciting time for our railways so many different livery’s so modern image is important. I started out trying to model the 1960s but have changed to a more upto date look, locos like Dapol class68 are just great.
    Although I work with “N” keep doing what you do 👍🏻 so I can borrow your ideas! 😉
    Cheers

    Another great chat video Richard, I must agree, that although I'm 63 and generally sway towards the steam era for the hobby to survive we must have more modern profile models as to keep the hobby alive it must remain relevant to younger modellers. When I actually stop and think about it I am probably a bit of a dinosaur as I started railway modelling back in the early seventies before many of the You Tube modellers that i regularly follow and that inspire me with new ideas were even born.. Hmmm scary.. Lol.

    I am 16 years old and currently making my own model railway in N gauge. I chose the era 1980s-1990s because of the variety of traction and British locomotives. My dad also remembers this era well, mostly the Class 50's on the Southern region and a lot of the electrics around the North West (where he grew up). One day, I also hope to make a second model railway based on the modern era (the era which I know best). Thanks for the video! :)

Luckily I am in the position of able to buy stock but I refuse to buy carriages at £50 plus and can’t see how the next generation are going to afford the latest trains. Dave Thankyou for getting me back into the hobby with your channel amongst others. Jon

    Since I recently found your channel I've been watching some of your older videos. For me I live in the former headquarters of the Frisco railroad. What is a challenge is to find passenger stock or even locos (steam or diesel) for that rail line. For those who have the ability you have to buy the rolling stock and locos and modify and paint them to look like what you want. As for modern vs. older, I personally am not a fan of most modern railroads. Where I live is still a railroad town (Springfield, Missouri), and I'm just not interested in modeling more current stuff. Granted I'm almost 39 now, and I grew up with a great grandmother telling me stories of her hobo brother-in-law who road the rails, and the steam locos coming through town. Also hearing people much older than me tell stories of riding the train to places and what it was like the first time. But with my age, I can't say I speak for those younger than me. I go to railroad shows here and I still see people young and old at these things. Parents taking their little kids, and college age students show up, as well as the older people. I do see a few women involved which is nice to see as my daughter loves to help me with our layout, and she loves trains as much as I do.

  • @Newmillsmodelrailway
    @Newmillsmodelrailway 5 лет назад

    It was an interesting point made about younger people more inclined to model what they see and what they've grown up with, which would be diesel and electric locos, or modern era. As much as I agree with that, I don't think that it's the case all the time. I'm 27 I do like some modern stuff, class 37's etc but actually I don't model it, because, quite frankly I can just go out and see it. I model the 1950's and 60's simply because it's no longer there, and I like the idea of being able to recreate something in miniature that's no longer really, I find that more exciting to model!
    I'm struggling to sleep so writing this in the middle of the night so apologies if it's not making any sense !
