  • Act 3 Finale from Falstaff, in a 1976 Glyndebourne production featuring Donald Gramm (Falstaff), Benjamin Luxon (Ford), Max-Rene Cosotti (Fenton), John Fryatt (Caius), Bernard Dickerson (Bardolfo), Ugo Trama (Pistola), Kay Griffel (Alice Ford), Elizabeth Gale (Nannetta), Nucci Condo (Quickly), and Reni Penkova (Mrs. Page). John Pritchard conducts the Glyndebourne Chorus and the London Philharmonic.

    Listen to the fabulous Timpani playing of the late great Alan Cumberland...playing the part not exactly as Maestro Verdi intended!
    He was an outstanding Timpanist and many recordings reveal his great skill on the instruments, often embellishing the scores with his own individual flair. RIP

    This is one of the better renditions of this finale, but Nannetta's voice is nearly inaudible during the sections where she is echoing Alice's lines that occur immediately before and soaring above the ensemble on her own (for example compare 1:36 to 1:39). Maybe this is a recording factor, but it is strange that only her voice is affected. But overall, very enjoyable!
