  • In this video I give an updated review of the keybed action of the M-AUDIO Hammer 88 Pro 88-note controller keyboard. Also check out the initial unboxing video where I was was a bit concerned the keybed might be a little thunky and spongy, a very important thing to know before blindly buying an 88-note controller online.

    Again, thank you for your review. I feel your esthetic with regard to 88-key piano-touch MIDI controllers very closely parallels mine, and you are saving me a lot of time, effort and money with your videos. I am now settled in to wait for an update of the SL 88 Grand...

    You make some good points, and you are very fair in characterizing how your preferences likely differ from those of mainstream consumers. It was evident to hear the key bed sounds. I have a C6 Yamaha grand with the silent system for quiet practice (which uses the grand action but stops the hammers from striking the strings). The key bed thumping sounds are easily heard by others almost two rooms away during silent play (although not to the player wearing headphones) but are imperceptible during acoustic play.

    • @Cre8ivKeyboards
      @Cre8ivKeyboards  11 месяцев назад

      That sounds great. I wonder if there is a way to put the silent system in any piano?

    Hahaha ! When I watched the video where you selected the M-Audio 88, unpacked it and tried it, I remember thinking 'It won't last !' when you commented on the keybed being thunky/clunky. I'm a bit fussy about the action as well and have been looking for a 61 keyboard controller, but the only keybed in that range is a synth type action, which I'm not really keen on. Some advertise as semi-weighted, but after trying a few, I can only guess they're using feathers for the counter-weight !

      I’m not sure you will find a good weighted 61 note keyboard, and as a piano player not sure why you’d want one. Maybe 73 like the CP73? www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CP73--yamaha-cp73-73-note-stage-piano

    The Komplete Kontrol S88 and the Arturia Keylab 88 MK2 have the same keybed. They use the fatar tp/100lr action which is a very heavy feel. Thanks for the review 🎹👍

      I honestly don’t like the Keybed on the s88. I was so close to purchasing it but that keybed is horrible. The best keybed I felt is on the montage 8 or even Roland’s ds-88

      @@Cre8ivKeyboards I bought an SL Grand but ended up returning it as a few individual keys had various response problems, such as incorrect midi velocities for repeated notes, or a key that had a different weight than its neighbors. If not for those QC problems I would have kept it since I loved the action in general.

    Hi there. I found this video because I'm another one looking for the perfect keybed, and I was curious about the M audio 88 Pro. I've owned the SL88 Pro, the Nord Piano 3 and 6HP, the Numa X, the P125, MODX8, Dexibel Vivo S7, and I could go on. When you said thunky and spongy, that was like 'nuff said. I envision my playing experience of any TP 100, which I couldn't stand. Of everything I've ever played, the Nord Piano 5 (which I presently own) is by far the best feel for me. I developed hand pain a few years ago, so I have had to be selective, but I can play the Nord all day with no issues. Now I'm looking for a second controller/workstation, even if I have to go way back to something like a Kurzweil PC2x. Thanks for sharing.

      Yes Nords feel good! As I mentioned in the video, I didnt hear the thunky of this with headphones on, but otherwise it was loud. I loved the P-515 and you might enjoy that > sweetwater.sjv.io/jr57ee

    Great review! Thank you. I have always tried to find a good MIDI controller for my piano VSTs (Pianoteq, Garritan CFX and VSL Bosendorfer 280VC) and I could not. I started with Roland FP-10 piano followed by M-Audio Hammer 88, Roland A88 mkII, Yamaha P-125, Kawai ES110, FP-30X, Roland FP90X and finally (~ a year ago) P-515.
    I love P-515 but I would also like to have a great action MIDI controller. I will not get Kawai VPC1 (old and heavy). I do not like any Kawai plastic action digital pianos (very noisy) and after testing a few MIDI controllers (Studio Logic, Arturia etc), I know that I will not be happy with Fatar actions (especially TP/100LR). I almost got Studio Logic Numa X Piano but I realized that my search is futile. I want a very quiet keybed (your great test illustrates the problem) that has wooden keys and has great, acoustic piano like feel.
    Yamaha P-515 is the best, even though the action is a bit heavy (80g for middle C) and it is itself heavy (wooden action always impacts the weight).
    There is no portable, digital piano or rather MIDI keyboard that would be better than P-515.
    Thank you again.
    Michael

    Ever considered the Kawai VPC1? Since you dont plan on moving it around the weight might not be a problem. from what I read about the specs it is probably the closest to a piano. If you ever try it, do a review...I want to hear what you have to say! :) I would love to have one, but I would want to take it out to play at church and such. the weight....uuggghhh

      also I saw where you got the SL 88 Grand. Good review. I have the RD 2000. it has wooden keys. I wonder how the SL 88 Grand feels compared to my RD. Like you say, I can't try these in the store...nobody carries the obscure stuff that you and I are looking for (they carry the most popular...and usually cheaper...keyboards). enjoy your reviews.

      I would love to play one. The hard part is finding them to play. These kind of keyboards aren't just sitting around at stores. And stores are becoming more streamlined. I have three guitar centers in my area. But none of them would have controllers that Exotic.

    I'll never understand people making such a fuss about the keyboard's key mechanical noise.... I mean... who the hell cares?
    I have quite a few 80's/90's synths/workstations, especially ones with Yamaha's FS synth keybed, mainly Korg M1/T3/01W/Trinity as well as a DX7.
    I laugh myself silly with someone get's annoyed by these controllers very slight "thunk" sound. I mean my T3 key sound for example sounds like i'm hitting it with a hammer (both up and down) if i dig down on it, and if i so some glissando's it sounds like a cargo train on the tracks at full speed. My wife can hear the sound of the keys clearly in the next room. This was never an issue or did i ever listen to anyone commenting about this back then.
    If you hear the sound from the keys, just turn the bloody volume up...
    On a stage with a PA at full blast, you can't even hear yourself think, let alone a slight "thud" sound from a keyboard...

    I’m on the same quest, looking for a really good keybed/action but I want control for Keyscape, VSTs etc. Found your channel as I’d come to the conclusion that I wasn’t going to get a good enough action on a MIDI controller unless I went for a VPC1 and at that price I figured the P515 would be a better option as I have the option to just play it independently.. Why did you sell yours? I thought that keyboard with a separate MIDI control surface would be the best route to go but now I’m wondering why you got rid. My other option is the Arturia KeyLab 88 mkii, which looks to be the best of that class of controller. Have you tried it? How does it compare to the 515?

    • @Cre8ivKeyboards
      @Cre8ivKeyboards  Год назад +1

      I have not had a chance to put my hands on the Keylab MKII (only the essential which is a great keyboard for the price and for semi-weighted, but not what we are looking for.) The P-515 is a great digital piano, but it’s not a controller. I found it hard to get the right sensitivity for Keyscape, NI, etc. The Hammer 88 worked better but not as good a keybed. Once I sell the Hammer 88 I am getting the StudioLogic SL88 Grand. It looks like the same keybed as the P515, but focused on being a controller.

      @@Cre8ivKeyboardsthe Studiologic SL88 Grand does not have the same keybed as the P515. It's such a shame that Yamaha doesn't allow for using their keyboards with VST's and other midi devices etc. Personally I would stear clear of Fatar keybed boards. Mixed results.
