Love this man's dedication to music. Bash him all you like. His tones, success and musicianship say it all. How boring the world would be if all sax players sounded the same!
He's good in whatever he does. He found a niche and made a name for himself. He's no John Coltrane or Charlie Parker. He didn't claim to be a Bebop god. He plays pop and he does a good job in it. Personally I love Jazz and I love Charlie Parker but I also know that I have to respect other musicians.
Thing is, he claimed to be a jazz musician. He's playing pop, not jazz. He markets himself as a "smooth jazz" musician, and therefore will be critiqued as if he was a jazz musician. Since he's technically the most paid jazz saxophonist of all time, I shall critique him rather harshly.
I cant wait for these cd's to start. Listening to kenny g for the past 25 years is the MAIN reason I started and learned how to play the saxophone. I am very excited as I'm sure a lot of players are. Mark D
What ever you think of KG, he's still a Multi-Grammy Award winning Instrumentalist who's done a lot for the Sax and Smooth Jazz. As a wanna be Smooth Jazz musician , I would love to follow in his footsteps. I could care less about Traditional Jazz vs Smooth Jazz or what ever , I just want to learn and get better at my instrument. This is a good question but very hard to answer. A lot of chosing the best mouthpiece and reed depends on what style of music you want to play and what sound you want to produce. There are many great mouthpieces and many different reeds available. The best thing is just to try different mouthpiece and reed combinations. First find a player with a sound you like and would like to have the same basic sound , so you will have a starting point.

It's really sad that some people feel it necessary to bad mouth and try to minimize guys like Kenny G who have had a ton of financial success in the smooth jazz genre; give of their time for good causes and put smiles on the faces of people that appreciate his music and are grateful for his thoughtfulness. He's not saying you can't like a song but you are able see how a song is constructed. Most of his songs are poorly constructed although he is a great player. Also just because people have a fanbase doesn't mean their music is well constructed. I mean over 1,549,661,368 people like gangnam-style, that doesn't mean you can compare it to Mozart. I like the song too but that's because it's fun, not because it's particularly well written. I put on Coltrane for those occasions.
Kenny G can play his ass off and I'm tired of these coltrane wanna bees giving him flack. I wish I could play as well as Kenny. that said, where the hell is the play-along? It is a great idea! I want it!!

Kenny G is one of the riche$t saxophone players ever. He is certainly(!!!) no Bird or Trane or Sonny, or Cannonball, or Prez, or any of other real jazz saxophone masters whose combined wealth still might not come close to Kenny's. But he's the guy who was playing all the pseudo funky noodling in the background music when a generation was getting their first blow job. I guess that counts for something. But seriously, anyone who can play fluffy stuff while smirking deserves so kind of notice.

If you are trying to measure the quality of a musician by counting their sells, you are wrong. Other thing is try to measure the quality of a bussinesman, then you are right. If you don`t see that, well, I don`t care, more than 75.000.000 people don`t realize it neither.

there are plenty of greater sax players out there who dont get as much attention that kenny does, sells have nothing to do with it. kenny is a better saxophone player than me but i know that i dont aspire to be like him but instead like rollins or coltrane.
+N Garcia He is. Albeit the cheesy, amost sub par kind of music he chose to play and is known for, the techinque he has developed is superb. He has an exquisite tone. Most sax teachers suggest their students to listen to Kenny G and analyze his tone. The soprano is one of the most (if not THE most) difficult saxophones to play. Not incidentally all students start with alto or at most, tenor. No one is recommended to begin with a soprano.
