“If we kill every last one of our enemies out there, will we finally be free then” that line broke me. Eren spent his entire life thinking that making it to the sea would symbolize his freedom, only to find out that there are even worse dangers beyond it
At this point he had such a level of self-awarness about the world that it was impossible to enjoying a moment like this
I used to think along these lines whenever I saw the Ocean. It seemed like part of an infinite natural World, and it is- but beyond that ocean (the Atlantic) lies Europe who are mostly our friends, but a little farther we find enemy places like Russia, Iran, and China, whole nations who would conquer or destroy us if they could.
Eren Yeager embodies thumos.

After catching up to season 4, the scene where Eren ask if killing all enemies would achieve freedom feels like he's asking himself rather than his friends. It's like Eren is asking his future self if that's really the only way to finally be free: by commiting global genocide.

What a way for WIT Studio to leave a mark on AOT.
Still not over them not making season 4.
I swear between WIT and their staff experiencing near-insolvency and KyoAni tragically losing many of their wonderful artists, I can hardly decide what’s more heartbreaking. Both animation studios put their heart into every little detail of the artworks that they produced and to see both of them being pressured by horrible working conditions, an attack and horrible work schedules imposed by the shitty higher-ups is just sad. I like Mappa but they follow right into WIT‘s footsteps of self-destruction with all the pressure they put on their workers. They will undeniably reach a point of no return of self-destruction, there’s a reason why the initial founder of Mappa left the company because they have started to become a working machine and not a creativity-led studio like Studio 4C for example.

Now rewatching, It’s interesting how armin and everyone else is paying attention to the beach and enjoying themselves, satisfied with the ‘freedom’ they’ve achieve d here while eren almost doesn’t really acknowledge it at all. Instead he looks across the ocean just like how he stared at the walls all the way back in season 1. Really interesting scene that contrasts eren and armin’s view of being free.
This seems to echo with what Kenny said to Levi as well, about how "it hurt like hell when we found how big the world really was."
It's almost like the farther he got outside the walls, the more trapped he was.
😢 Truly tragic. Knowing everything but being unable to change it. Isayama created such a cruel world . Just a cage within another cage...
well, yeah? you gotta realize that eren has already seen the ocean through his dad, but to eren it wasnt the freedom he sought for so long because he knows there are people on the other side who want to kill his people.
Yeah, it’s a really deep scene. While Armin and Mikasa are enjoying themselves and the novelty of the beach and the ocean, Eren is caged by historical conflict and doesn’t feel free. He knows what’s coming and knows it can’t really be avoided. He talks about killing all of their enemies across the sea, but he seems unsure about whether that will truly resolve things and allow them to be free.

ever since he was born, he was always him..
This was Eren's cry for help, a cry to save him from being a slave to his fate, a cry to save him from becoming a mass murderer, a cry for help from his precious friends. He didn't want his future to happen, but what can you do when fate has power over you?
other animes would try and teach a lesson that anyone can master their own fate and take control of where they lead but this anime shows the reality the harsh desparing reality that fate cannot be mastered and everyone is a slave to it no matter how hard you try no matter how hard eren tried he was always a slave to his fate and nobody saw it
Everyone in AoT has a choice, and, at one time or another, most chose to make others miserable to further their own selfish interests. Their suffering was a long round of perpetual suffering brought on by those around them, the very thing the Titans stood for to begin with. In fighting the Titans, they quite literally became the Titans, and the round of bloodshed would continue until they chose to stop making others suffer to further their interests. Peace is a simple formula. Too many people are just unwilling to live "after the order of happiness". Fate has nothing to do with it. That's just a very lame and flimsy excuse for selfish, destructive behavior.
you are getting it wrong,,its not like his fate trap him,he himself is dissapointed in so much pain bcz there is no freedom what he dreamt of and for achieving his freedom he will do it,,he is just asking his future self is it the only way,,,but when future came true he confirm it and keep moving forward,,bcz he know the outcome and he wanted it

This was so depressing to watch. He would have been overjoyed to see the ocean if he was still that naive Eren from Season 1, he constantly talked to Armin about one day seeing the ocean. They nearly died many times and lost many comrades on the way, and once he finally sees the ocean he just has a blank face. Everyone else has their mouth wide open in surprise but Eren looks indifferent. This scene really hit hard for me because I was going through a lot of personal stuff while watching S3. Sometimes you work so hard for something, but when you finally get there you ask yourself if it was worth it, and if it really mattered. Eren has one of the best character developments of all anime protagonists. From “I’m going to kill all of the titans!” to “Will we finally be free?”
All i will say without spoilers is be fucking prepared. Eren changed a lot more................
@@AbsurdFalcon I’ve already heard and haven’t spoiled it for myself. I can’t wait to see what happens.
@@Crow__007 be carefull dont let you be spoiled.
Yea i cant imagine knowing your whole life you thought that once you leave those walls and see the ocean than you will be free. Just to find out that not only are the titans a product of other people but that the whole world is out to get you. It must absolutely soul crushing. But its also a huge character development for him cause naive szn 1 eren would have cried and wouldnt have even listen to reiner. But now we see him telling reiner that he understands why he did what he did. The whole series is just beautiful
well i waited years for a pc build but now i have it and it's not fun now cuz it took so long that i wasn't even happy.
To everyone, they see blue. To Eren, he sees red.
same like the last conversation between him and Armin.. that's kinda parallel...
Attack on Titan is an actual masterpiece man. It's a one of a kind anime, it's not sexualizing the characters in any way and it makes sure the character doesn't get stabbed through the heart and live without a good explanation as to why. It couldn't have been made better.
That's right, anime nowadays seems to sell sexy characters to attract viewers. I know that a lot of series are good now, but should there be fan service/or sexualize women?

For people saying Eren ruined the mood,he's not wrong tho. Everyone thought its over but Eren knew its far from that. He will have a major personality shift this season as well as Reiner. As if they switched places.
True. I can't even choose which side should I be. But now I'm leaning towards Reiner's.
I side with Eren still because the Marleyians (did I spell that right?) will never quit trying to attack Paradis island and not only that but Eldians should not be living in camps in Marley and believe that is what freedom is. They deserve to be free of the Marley government .

I wholeheartedly agree, even non-anime fans have been using AOT as some sort of social commentary when talking about the cycle of violence. People even compare this scene to a typical resident of North Korea - like imagine living there your whole life and because of the extremely limited access to information, you most likely don't even know there's a whole world outside of East Asia and once you somehow find out (as Kenny said, you can bet it hurts like hell) - this is the Breaking Bad of anime for me.

Since he was a kid, to see the ocean represented having finally made it. Being free of the horrors that stripped him of his innocence. Having saved the people he cared most about. Doing something that mattered. I don’t have to fight anymore. What was meant to be the happiest moment of his life quickly became a symbol of futility and a path towards despair. The fight hasn’t even begun…
This to me is one of the most touching scenes in the anime. Everyone sees such a vast oceans for the first time. It should be a literal dream come true! But Eren can’t enjoy it…he can only relish that people that hate eldiens are on the other side, and they will never be free. It’s an metaphor for how so many irl feel. They can’t buy what they want, they can’t go where they want, they have to work a job they hate…it’s a question everyone ask at some point in their life, “will I ever be free?”
3:28 solution to all that
I remember the time when I thought, as soon as they reach the ocean, they will have their happy end and the story will be over.
Now I realize, the shit has only started.
well it was the beginning of the end
As an anime only I don't think Eren ruined the mood. In fact I sympathize with him. He just learned his world is much larger than he could ever imagine and beyond their island continent there is an entire world that are his enemies. It's terrifying. They've risked everything to get there and it's not enough. It wasn't enough. There's more out there. More hardship.

i honestly feel so bad for eren. so many ppl misunderstand him and it’s kind of frustrating sometimes. for the ppl who’re saying that eren ruined the mood, think about how he felt at that time. he was traumatized and plus he already saw the ocean in his father’s memories so he wasn’t as excited or fascinated as the other ppl in the squad. he’s clearly also disappointed at the fact that beyond the ocean wasn’t freedom just like he always believed. he also said that beyond the ocean there was more enemies and that they are not free yet, again, i feel so bad for him bc he just sonds so tired. this scene i think is one of the most saddest scenes in the anime. this is the scene where he finally broke and that the joyful and happy eren we used to know was officially gone. i haven’t read the manga but based on the spoilers i’ve seen he’s depressed af and he’s mentally not okay. i just wanna hug him sm :(
