  • Mackenzie park was constructed by convicts from Oahu in the 1850s. Several of them died during this grueling process. The forest ranger who planted all the trees after whom the park was named, passed away at a very young age. Several murders have taken place here since then. Because of all this, the park is said to be haunted.
In 1980, two young campers were dragged from their tent and severely beaten, leaving one camper dead and the other disabled. This crime remains unsolved. In 1993, three men kidnapped, raped, and murdered a sixteen year old girl. These men were prosecuted for this crime, and confessed that they threw her over the cliffs into the ocean while she was still alive. More recently in 2008, film crews shooting a Helen Mirren film called "The Tempest" discovered the bullet-riddled body of a local surfer. The killer was his own father. The notoriously unsafe sea cliffs have killed several fishermen and 'opihi pickers whose bodies are usually never found in the harsh Puna surf. More about the park here: bigislandhikes...
Despite all this, I found the park to be a very peaceful and calm place. The forest is beautiful and dense with ironwood pine trees. You won’t see this anywhere else in Hawaii. Do be careful and respect the space here.

When I was a kid, my older sister’s best friend was horribly murdered at Makenzie Park in the early 90’s. Her name was Sequoia.
She was tossed from those very cliffs after being assaulted by three men in the most savage of ways. She survived the assault and the fall from the cliff. She was finished off by large rocks being tossed at her from above after her attackers heard her moaning from below. I am almost in tears as I write this. I spent a lot of time with Sequoia growing up. She was extremely kind, bright and beautiful. I had the biggest crush on her for years. I will never forget her.
Every time I see these cliffs or drive by this park, I am reminded of her. If I remember correctly, there was a horrible murder that happened at Makenzie during the early 80’s involving two campers and a still unidentified suspect.
To top my long rant off, one of my oldest friends, schoolmate and fellow surfer, Hans Christian “Chris” Randrop was shot and killed at this very same place by his own father and if memory serves me correct, he too was tossed from those cliffs as well.
Makenzie Park is cursed with bad Mana and I get the chills every time I drive or ride pass it. I sincerely appreciate this vid. Rest In Peace, Sequoia Vargas. Rest In Peace, Brahdah Chris.
