The GDR women were again favored, having won the 1974 European Championships, and were led by Christina Brehmer and Ellen Streidt, silver and bronze medalists in the 400. The final was almost a walkover as the only question was by how much the East German team would break the world record. Their final three runners posted sub-50 legs, as they ran the first time under 3:20, bringing the record down to 3:19.23. The US was second, over 30 metres down the track.

I watched these Olympics as a kid. Everyone knew why the EGs were winning big in 72 and 76.
Same reason why flo jo was winning.
I´m very proud of Finland´s race.Marika,Pirjo,Mona-Lisa and Riitta made great race.

Simo Lämsä The Finns definitely used blood doping for sure, and they used drugs. The coaches were Russian and definitely used drugs, the whole Finnish team was using drugs. I know this because my uncle was one of those athletes and he himself did blood doping and they used steroids and HCG and stopped using them before the games. There is your proof, okay? And he told me almost of all the athletes were doing this

If you look at the 400m individual and the race, you will see the Finnish women had incredible closing speed, which is a telltale sign of drug use, very few runners at this distance can have this sudden burst of speed without aid. See how the DDR and Finland closed in the individual race, while the Americans who were well postioned were overhauled like they were high school runners.

So true that the GDR went through a state-system steroids program BUT: FIRST also the GDR had the best trainers and sport system in the world selecting children since early school and directing them to the sport in which the could yield best and SECOND also the USA, USSR and the rest of countries used steroids as well ... Who can blame Marita Koch and not Florence Griffith, for heaven's sake ????

I hope you are referring to their running and not their feminine physiques. If you look close, you can actually see the second East German runner's penis slip out the side of the shorts.

All world records set before 1990 should be removed once and for all. There is only one reason for their longevity.
I would be quite happy to see the records remain, irrespective of whether they were attained by drug enhancements or not. Even the ones that are caught out today, they should have an asterix next to the record, but keep the clean athletics records as the official records. 3 minutes 19 for a 4x400m relay is something of a winning time in any clean race for the Olympics or world championship. We should not include this race, implied, as being drug enhanced.

GDR athletes went through a state-system based on drugs, yes, but this nagging about them all looking like men is bullshit, a lot of the East German women actually looked amazing, i watched quite a few championships in the 80s and East Germany was seriously impressive, there were some few not quite looking right, but just a few, in the west athletes were "juiced" as well, also not quite looking right.
