  • megger testing a hvac compressor motor winding best method, also megger testing the power wires as well, a megger ohm meter can output upto 1000 volts DC thus be able to measure resistance in the millions of ohms range, in HVAC if the wire or load measures 50 to100 Megs to ground its caution ⚠️ if measures 0 to 50 Megs its bad and is considered good if measures above 100 Megs

    Great video!
    I would also add that it is a great idea to log the readings on the unit and on the service ticket, so the next time you megger the compressor you can look for degradation of the winding integrity over time.

      That's a great idea. We have a notes section on our PM logs. This could show the customer ahead of time compressor, or motor, degradation and to prepare for replacement.

    i would ignore what he said about being able to skip testing the compressor if you check out fine from the contactor. always do comprehensive tests you dont know if intermittent issues are being caused by compressor windings barely touching the housing etc. also you will be able to tell if that compressor is on its way out soon and prevent further problems in the future

    Great video. I've been doing this HVAC thing for a while but this is one thing not sure about. How do you know how much voltage to put in on meg test? Or just go max on what the meter allows?

    • @D2DNYAC
      @D2DNYAC  2 года назад +1

      If the selection is available I start low then go to a higher voltage output if the equipment/ load tested good, I increase the output test voltage, I believe this will protect the mega meter in the event of a bad short

    • @nass7070
      @nass7070 2 года назад +2

      Always use it double voltage.. ex: if your motor work on 240 volts or 208 you use 500 volts on the meghometer

    • @nass7070
      @nass7070 2 года назад +2

      Here in canada we test 600 v motors with 1000v on meghometer.

    Noobie here trying to get into learning hvac (with the help of skillcat and hvac guy whos working on anual servicing our 100 rtu units and teaching me at same time)How do you know if which of the 250/500/1000 options to use and which one is safe and not too high and will fry motor.

  • @RJMaker
    @RJMaker 2 года назад +4

    There are 3 big reasons you perform a HV Meg test as close as possible to the windings... 1) passing electrical noise through sensitive electronics that may share earth grounding. 2) both sides of the test need to be 100% to achieve an accurate result. It's best to completely eliminate the impedance from wiring and connections. 3) If a compressor MFG is going to publish leakage thresholds (most do not) they perform these test directly at the compressor. NOTE: Copeland's AE-1294 is a MUST read.

    • @D2DNYAC
      @D2DNYAC  2 года назад +2

      @RJ_Make great points my friend I’ll give you that, However not very logical!

    • @RJMaker
      @RJMaker 2 года назад +2

      @@D2DNYAC Perhaps you can explain the breakdown in my logic?
      My comments are nothing revolutionary and certainly not new. (except the electrical noise damaging sensitive electronics - which is a fairly new observation) right from Copeland's AE-1294.
      Among other things it says
      "Any external electrical components connected to
      the compressor terminals also affect megohm readings.
      Wires, contactors and relays all leak current
      and will decrease compressor megohmeter readings
      if not disconnected."
      Bottom line is, it's always best practice to isolate the compressor completely from all external components.
