California Buried in Record Snow after Winter Storms - Driving Through a Snow Maze - 2023 - 4k

  • In #california the #snow has piled up sometimes reaching the powerlines. The #snowfall from repeated #winter #storm has been near the record amount for December-January producing snow cuts higher than heavy machinery and well above the first story of homes. Shot locations include Soda Springs, Norden, Serene Lake and #DonnerPass in the Sierra near I-80 in California. Heavy #snow and #snowstorm is common #weather for the mountains, this season has been off to a record start which should help the state suffering from a mega drought.

Glad to see it as we've not been able to get up there from our Truckee since before all the storms began. The 8-10 households along that road pay $1200 each per winter to keep that road plowed!

      I wonder how much it costs for those people that have to have their roofs cleared off. I see that a lot of the homes have metal roofs and that will allow it to slide off more...but that happens for those that don't? And the same guys that do the roads probably side line to do roofs...bt that would only be AFTER they clean the roads, driveways, or parking lots.

    • @jenniferroberts7581
      @jenniferroberts7581 Год назад +5

      @@gobbletegook People up there don't generally get their roofs cleared - building codes require 500 pounds per square foot snowload! But over the years, yeah, major damage has happened - typically to older houses. Our cabin has a shed roof, but not much slope - but it's built with 4x14 beams on 18" centers -- in big snow years, those beams deflect a few inches! And a big glacier builds up and eventually slides off the back with a huge crash. Sorry I can't post photos here.

    If you haven't lived there you just can't fathom the amount of snow the Sierra Nevadas can accumulate. In my early adulthood in the late 70s and early 80s, I used to cross country ski around Norden and Kingvale. On several winters, you would have to be hyper vigilant when skiing across powerline rights of way, as the charged lines were at a height that you could ski into them or across them.

    Driving plow trucks for years in the Midwest and dealing with moderate snowfall was a walk-in-the-park. Here, it’s pretty clear these roads were not cleared by snowplows, but snow blown up and out due to straight edge walls. Cool to see and kudos to the operators that moved the snow!

    Someone needs to get out the spray cans and write street names on the snowbanks, that really is a maze!

      The "streets" in the first 5 minutes don't have any street signs - and some of them are dirt roads, generally not maintained except for those of use who own property up there.

      Thanks, I did not know they were not paved. Are the roads by Serene Lake paved? I Know they had really tall street signs, I'd guess about 8' up but even those are buried. I've been to Soda in the Summer but not these roads.

    • @jenniferroberts7581
      @jenniferroberts7581 Год назад +2

      @@WxChasing Yes, Serene Lakes is all paved and in Placer County so they plow over there. Hill Road and Donner Drive (those are your first 5 minutes) -- part of those are paved, but that was paid for by the homeowners about 15 years ago. The roads are on the Nevada County Assessors maps (and Google Maps), but the County doesn't maintain them. So we do our own road repairs, gravel, excavating the culverts, pruning and whatever needs to be done. Come visit us in the summer! Big snow up there IS pretty darn impressive! Thanks for sharing your great footage.

    You want snow? Try Valdez, Alaska. I worked at the pipeline terminal there and in winter from time to time one would have to brush off 3 - 4 feet of snow off the pickup truck before heading to work in the morning.

    I lived in Reno most of my life and must say this snowstorm is not anything new. There was massive snow in 1981,1993,2004, 2005 and many years in between. Then it's going to warm up and flood in the Reno area like it is in no cal
