I read an article about how most generations didn't have such strong nostalgia for other decades and what the paper found was that those faces people looked towards an even brighter future, but for our (young) generations the future looks like it's getting worse and that might play a part in the heavy retro nostalgia that we have now! Like how in the 80s technology was advancing rapidly and most things could be mass produced and the possibilities seemed endless. They didn't know about climate change, the economic collapse of 2008, the economic hardships we still have, rising prices for housing and living expenses and education, the rising student dept, unemployment and all those other things our generation grows up with as our future. It's super interesting and kind of sad the reason for this widespread nostalgia partially comes from not having a bright future to look forward to as humanity so we look elsewhere when these troubles weren't weighing so heavily on people. I say keep this 80s nostalgia and break the cycle but don't forget we have to better our own future too!

Excellent film, how it just goes from psychedelic to b horror schlock to disturbing to Cheddar Goblin is masterful. Theres so many filmmakers that try to bend genres and fail.
Thyny San Mandy is weird if you take it's story at face value and not as a metaphor. Upon rewatching there are many visual and story cues and for that reason Mandy is much deeper of a story than the dialog give it credit for. Hint: Mandy and the Jeremiah's face morphing(not solely drug related) and... Cheddar Goblin. It's a visual thinker film, not spoon fed cinema. Also: her unexplained scar.
People who didn't experience the 80's just don't know what they missed out on. It has a different vibe about it. You could tell it was special when it was happening. I loved the 80's at the time and forever more
This was super weird to see! They just mentioned all of my interests in one video. David Lynch, Tim Burton, 1950s pop culture , Drive, Mandy, Beyond the black rainbow, the guest, stranger thing, synth wave, Indie pop, the neon demon, only god forgives, Bronson, neon demon, blade runner, kung fury! This was so cool, all of my interests in one video! I love the 80s Retro Wave trend, hope it keeps going!
Nothing captures retro wave more than discovering a cool obscure real 80s film. I've found loads I've never seen or heard of as a kid in the 80s! You didn't see all of them and there are a treasure trove to be discovered if you want to really get into retro. Some you channels review these old fun films.
Absolutely I agree. I keep discovering great, obscure 80s films I haven't seen yet, but I love retrowave films also, when they are done well. I really enjoyed Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy, although they both have their own vision which is more than just a retro imitation.
StoryDive it does seem cyclical , like how in the 80s we were looking back into the 50s ( back to the future, grease et al) But I've seen more 80s films again and again more than any other. It's literally the pinnacle of human culture, everything in the future will just be recreating the joys of how it used to be this century.
I noticed that as well. Originally, I was going to say the cycle is around 30 years, but I realized in earlier cycles, like the 50s nostalgia of the 1970s it was more 20-25 years. I think my generation have held on to their childhood longer than previous generations. 30 is the new 20... or maybe we're just a bunch of adult children. It will probably be worse with millennials.
As far as aesthetic, cinematography, characters and music go I think Hobo With a Shotgun was a huge omission. While definitely self aware and cheesy, it brought me back to some crazy 80s revenge/horror movies i watched as a kid in the 80s.
When you mentioned Blade Runner 2049 as an example of Hollywood reviving a beloved 80s property, I was surprised you didn’t mention Mad Max: Fury Road too.
They used a full 80s soundtrack and placed in themes and events that were taking place at that time. The Regan/Dukakis debates, Mrs. Darko is reading Stephen King’s IT, the pop culture icons some of the kids are dressed up as for Halloween, and Patrick Swayze’s weird self help videos. They didn’t overkill it with the look being 80s per-say, but it definitely had the feel of a suburban town in that era.
Dukakis election campaign. The soundtrack. The way they looked (no - not everyone looked like a total dork in the 80ies). The use of 80ies movie stars etc. etc.
Hotline Miami is one of the first games that I saw pay homage to the 80's retro wave aesthetic. It's one of the many pieces of media that does the 80's aesthetic in the way I like. The soundtrack is amazing; its a combination of 80's synths and 2000 - 2010's EDM rhythms and melodies.
Great video! I’m a 90s baby but feel a weird nostalgia for the 80s - a time I didn’t experience. Something about the style and the music gets me. Wish I could have been born 10 years earlier. 🎧
Great video. I personally started seeing a huge increase in '80's retro throwbacks after the movie Drive (2011). I think this really inspired a plethora of film makers.
Some would say the trend began with Donnie Darko. I never understood that. The tone, story and probably 99% of the dialogue of Donnie Darko could be dropped into any other decade without missing a beat. I don't see what's very retro about Donnie Darko. Good on you for leaving it off your list.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004) was probably my nostalgia trip trigger. The soundtrack led me to the whole retro 80's music thing with Figurine--which wasn't even in the movie.
There was was nothing like growing up in the 1960s - 1970's & the 1980's ? I was born mid 1961 - I can rememember as a child My mother making tea for when Dad cam home from work . Whats that got to do with anything you might ask ? -Back then TV was a newish medium ! - On weekdays TV started at 6pm & Stopped broadcasting at 12midnight - As I remember it ? - It had Stopped at 10:30 before I was born ! - Only BBC broadcast one channel and that was in black & white and obviously in glorious Mono its early 1960's I'm sat back on the kitchen top -Moms cutting meat for Dads & our tea - On the shelf was Moms Radio - Mom loved that radio - That radio had tavelled with mom more than I had with her ! - M om would sing along to the pop records of the time .... TOM JONES - ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINK - (haha No im not kidding there ?) - the BEATLES - ANDY WILLIAMS & many many more as the adverts would say ! Haha ! - One thing though our family had a touch of the Bogarts ? -By that I mean Dad was older than Mom he was 43 when I was born ? & Mom was 26 ? (16 years difference) Dad would listen to the world service on BBC radio -That was something he had started listening to after he came home after the of the war ? - Another thing was of course you had to tune into these vatious stations no such thing as pre tuned ? Haha - Mom would have to retune her pop radio stations every time ! - Which was a pet peeve of moms - Mom would sing songs by these word for word ! - Think thats where I got my love for music ! Thenbthere
Then theres the 1970s Big gramaphone LPs & Single Wow we got a Colour TV - strange as it may seem now it was rented but back then it was the norm ! - 3 channels - BBC 1 & 2 & ITV 1978 -1979 we had Access to a VCR -A big clunky thing size of a small car ? - With what looked like piano keys haha latest tech ? & Our TV sets had acquirred another 2 channels - 5 In all now - Channel 4 & Channel 5 and I was now a member of three video clubs Ist 2 vids we rented (Which was the start of my learning curve of "dont beleive the covers " - Beware ! - There is a world of crappy movies out there ! -The Turkeys ) We rented because they cost so much to buy - A blank video for 40mins back in 1975 cost £14:00 each ! -1980 you could get pack of 3 (three hour long) blank tapes for £12:00 Weekends after pub we would meet go home food drink organised ! - And watch movies Mad Max 1 - the Warriors - Vavishing point - Animal House & King frat were all staple - We would rent these often so often we could have bought them ! A lot of George Romeros Zombie movies too we rentend - plus then we kept up with new realeses ? Movie videos were starting to be sold £19 went down in price - The classics £15 to £10.99p £9.99 finally £5:99p -I Started collecting movies on tape ! I also started colleting CDs & they were a lot of promotion compilation CDs that were low cost to promote this new medium & could not afford a player but would buy the music ! Because I knew I wanted one To Be Continued ......?
I personally think Stranger Things is the epitome (if not, a very high contender) of retro wave. I would describe it in one word: evolution. What started off as sort of a compilation of visual homages to the best of John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg quickly turned into something more ambitious and realized. Sure the Easter eggs and callbacks are still there, but the show doesn't forget on how to be stylistically independent. A great example is in the characters. A lot of them are your favorite archetypes of 80's genre films, like a douche bag jock, grumpy police chief and a little girl with superpowers. As the show progresses, the direction breaks them free of what they initially seem to be to become wholly three dimensional people you could grab a drink with or hit up the arcade with. They are great at hooking you in and driving you to somewhere even better as an engaged viewer.
14:10 i mean, that could be the case. with this whole 80s nostalgia cycle, we also got a bit of it's 50s influences as well. the song "if you're too shy let me know" by the 1975 takes a lot of inspiration from Huey Lewis, and, conscequentially, from it's 1950s classic rock influences.
Great video! I just discovered you and subscribed. I was a child of the 80s. I love the resurgence of all the 80s stuff. Just my opinion but I think a lot of the reason we are going back is partly running out of ideas and partly things are darker and shittier now. Things seemed a little more light hearted back then. Mass shootings weren't a thing. Social media didn't exist. I could write a book on this subject. Mandy is a masterpiece & I got Kubrick goosebumps watching Panos Cosmatos films.
oh absolutely the 80s/retrowave will continue much further into the future. I love it so much and I wish I had more like that fitting to my aesthetic. the Neon Demon was the key to unlocking my love for these sorts of movies or media, something about seeing the trailer back in 2016 made me obsess over it and want to see it really badly, it then became my number one favorite movie and I really really want more from it but unfortunately that won't happen. I didn't find out about drive until a few months ago and fell in love with that too, NWR is a genius and Cliff Martinez never fails with the soundtracks. I also watched beyond the black rainbow some time last year and I didn't really enjoy it but there were a few things I loved about it including the soundtrack...maybe I should watch it again. Mandy and the house of the evil are now on my watch list, i LOVE weird psychological horror. Do not get me started on stranger things, that gets me on a strong emotional level..I just love it too much
I think 80s retrieve has more of a way to go. I grew up in the 80s, and love the aesthetics, and i like to share some of my 80's favorite as well as retrowave style movies and shows like Stranger Things with my kids, which means my kids will likely love it as well.. i don't mind seeing more of it as long as it's done correctly.
Kiran Govind which I find more interesting and emotional than any modern totally new synth music. Even the band must has gone all retro 80s synth wave. I think we are done, that's it. The 80s was the peak.
So glad you gave The Guest its dues. The Guest is what launched me into the world of retrowave with its soundtrack. That's where I discovered Omniverse by S U R V I V E who would later go on to score Stranger Things!
Thanks man! I was looking at a channel just the other day with a quarter of my views but 4 times my subs and thinking "what the hell is wrong with my channel?", lol. It's good to know it is appreciated by some people.
I gravitate towards the movies/shows that I vaguely recollect from my childhood. The ones that have the most nostalgic appeal are ones that I (kind of) only half remember. When I was around 4-8, networks like Fox, USA, etc. would play late-night and Saturday movies. I remember some of them, but my memory is fuzzy. The appeal in watching them is partly due to my own attempt at trying to "remember what I remember"... Of course, there are the classics that I remember from the late '80s/early '90s, but they've been pervasive throughout the years.
Another film from 2014 with retro synth aesthetics was Cold in July (2014). I consider that to be a companion piece to The Guest (2014) but with a more wild story. That's one of my fav films of all time.
I think that the cycle you reference is solely a sociological phenomenon. People are tired, they are sick of modern media ignoring what they want, instead making movies and art that are 'safe bet' options. Stuff like 'solo, a star wars movie', it's not even being subtle here its literally telling you what it's trying to accomplish in the title. And since society's condition can be seen through its art, we can under good authority assume that we became a 'safe bet' society. A society So scared of failure we don't even try, I mean look at PC world we are living in. Generally speaking your main goal is to not make your self a social liability. To in every fashion model every action you take into a 'safe bet'. But when people take an honest look at the past and see a free, colorfully vibrant, dangerously exhilarating culture that encouraged the individual to take risks we almost automatically fall in love. We see a past where people could truly embrace who they were without having to care about the approval of some social media echo chamber or some mega corporation. In eccence, we are tired of living in the dystopia that we are in and want to return to the normality That should exist. And the closest we can get to doing so is to retreat into the stories and art from a bygone Era. And I don't think we are going to go into another 25 year shift. Because there is nothing about modern day media can offer us today because we traded out our willingness to take a risk and defy the social norm to abiding to the social norm with every fiber of the collective being of modern media.
What we need is the future-vision from the 80s, converted into something that works today. And it seems it IS on its way, its comeing more and more. And you see the style more and more here and there.
BtBR, just like "Mandy", is all over the place even moreso with 70s rather than 80s trippy, psychedelic, disturbing sci-fi and horror cult films. It adapts the sci-fi and horror styles of Kubrick (from "2001" onwards), Tarkovsky ("Solaris" and "Stalker"), Carpenter (especially "Dark Star"), Cronenberg (all the way back to his early student films made around 1970), Nicolas Roeg ("Don't look now", "The Man who Fell to Earth"), Jodorowsky ("El Topo" and "Holy Mountain"), Douglas Trumbull ("Silent Running", "Brainstorm"), Dario Argento (especially "Suspiria"), and Ken Russell, as well as that of individual films such as "Zardoz", "THX 1138", "Eraserhead", "Buckaroo Banzai", and "Begotten". Most of which actually date from the 70s, with a smaller overspill particularly to the early-80s.
I think the 80's trend is being absorbed and remodelled to something new that reverbs to the millenial culture, such as vaporwave and synthwave. Believe me, the 80's aestethics and music aren't disappearing, it's getting recycled. We care a great lot for the 80's.
I felt, upon seeing it,that House of 1000 Corpses referenced the look and feel of both 70s horror films-with it’s Texas Chainsaw-like family, and the 80s with its color palette.
this video makes me moister than an oyster. I'm not ready for the 80's retro wave to end and I 100 % don't want the 90's to replace it, these times they are a changin.. 😞
Thanks for the suggestion! I looked at that one in preparation for this video. Good horror film but didn't seem retro enough for me except for the 80s metal soundtrack...but maybe I should have included it.
Stretching the definition a bit, but the new Mortal Kombat (2021) and Ready Player One are also great fits. I also believe X Men Origins: Wolverine has a bit of this aesthetic as well. Black mirror
I think you forgot to mention the movie Hobo with a shotgun which is an homage to old exploitation films with a super 80s type of score and lighting. Also I have to mention this short Finnish film from 2016 called the defiler, which is a revenge story, with really 80s type of synth music, neon lights and really brutal action throughout the movie.
Exactly. I really haven't seen a horror film quite like it since. Ti West's next film The Innbetweeners had a similar feel, but wasn't really shot like that. And I just saw Mandy on Demmand about a week ago. Holy Shit. I watched it again the next day. Btw, great video. I REALLY enjoyed it
all these 80's movies spontaneously arose out of their specific time and place utilising the technology then available, even the 50s nostalgia ones felt genuine.. they came from a very natural and authentic place inside the creators, an innocent desire to express something.. the same cannot be said about the revivals.. they are all self conscious contrived and manipulative trying hard to be something that was once beautiful but they have no essence
in my opinion, I think that the john wick films(specifically 2 and 3) are some of the best retro wave films to date. The movies definitely feel like an 80s action movie and the neon bathed visuals also make me think they were going for this aesthetic. Although, this is just my opinion. Also they make so much retro wave styled art around john wick.
Like Stranger Things, The Americans isn't a film but definitely commits to embracing the 80's for look and feel. Just much better acting & writing than most 80's action / thrillers though!
Oh man, I love all of the 80’s retrowave as I am an 80’s kid, 90’s teen. Yeah, I’m keen for this to go longer. Great video BTW. I’m experimenting with launching a video streaming offering that has both original 80’s - 90’s TV and Film content and this sort of thing. How do you think that would go? 😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺

Let’s break the cycle and stay in the 80’s for a while longer
I plan to!
yes!

The 80s never left
Mandy is the best film of the year bar none. It stands head and shoulders above everything. It's a modern day Holy Mountain.
It was weird. It was, meh.
It's not for everyone.

Man, the 80s were so damn unique; I think it will be around for a while.
Pacific Rim has a subtle 80's vibe with neon colors.
"Mandy" was a trip... Loved it.
"MAKE AMERICA THE 80'S AGAIN"

3 o clock high, dream a little dream, iron eagle and, license to drive are some cool 80s films that flew under the radar!
Obscure 80s music also captures that retro wave as well

I probably should have at least mentioned it.
An even bigger miss was Ready Player One
I honestly think Retro Wave started back in 2001, with Donnie Darko.
Umm... What?! Even the film grade felt 80's.
I believe it took place in 1988, it's been a long time since Ive seen it tho.
They used a full 80s soundtrack and placed in themes and events that were taking place at that time. Great video, thanks for posting.. the rise of Synth bands in the past 10 years also add to the 80’s retro revival.
Nice essay! We need a part 2 definitely!
The movie “drive” totally nailed it!!
Great video! I’m a 90s baby but feel a weird nostalgia for the 80s - a time I didn’t experience. Something about the style and the music gets me. Wish I could have been born 10 years earlier. 🎧

Whats that got to do with anything you might ask ? -Back then TV was a newish medium ! - On weekdays TV started at 6pm & Stopped broadcasting at 12midnight - As I remember it ? - It had Stopped at 10:30 before I was born ! - Only BBC broadcast one channel and that was in black & white and obviously in glorious Mono
its early 1960's I'm sat back on the kitchen top -Moms cutting meat for Dads & our tea - On the shelf was Moms Radio - Mom loved that radio - That radio had tavelled with mom more than I had with her !
Thenbthere
Then theres the 1970s Big gramaphone LPs & Single
Wow we got a Colour TV - strange as it may seem now it was rented but back then it was the norm ! - 3 channels - BBC 1 & 2 & ITV 1978 -1979 we had Access to a VCR -A big clunky thing size of a small car ? - With what looked like piano keys haha latest tech ? & Our TV sets had
acquirred another 2 channels - 5 In all now - Channel 4 & Channel 5 and I was now a member of three video clubs Ist 2 vids we rented (Which was the start of my learning curve of "dont beleive the covers " - Beware ! - There is a world of crappy movies out there ! -The Turkeys )
We rented because they cost so much to buy - A blank video for 40mins back in 1975 cost £14:00 each ! -1980 you could get pack of 3 (three hour long) blank tapes for £12:00
Weekends after pub we would meet go home food drink organised ! - And watch movies
Mad Max 1 - the Warriors - Vavishing point - Animal House & King frat were all staple - We would rent these often so often we could have bought them !
A lot of George Romeros Zombie movies too we rentend - plus then we kept up with new realeses ?
Movie videos were starting to be sold £19 went down in price - The classics £15 to £10.99p
£9.99 finally £5:99p -I Started collecting movies on tape !
I also started colleting CDs & they were a lot of promotion compilation CDs that were low cost to promote this new medium & could not afford a player but would buy the music !
Because I knew I wanted one
To Be Continued ......?
80s will never die, but that’s just me probably. I was only alive for 6 months in the 80s, but the music and aesthetic will always be my favorite
Great video man, you really hit the nail on the head with your movie choices.
Wet Hot American Summer... that reminded me most of my childhood... the attention to detail was spot on...
I'm 13 and actually do enjoy 80s music don't hurt me😭
Their are a lot of artist that are doing that today
Ok
Nah it's just uninspired 80s
Couldn't have said it better myself. ❤️
This video deserves so many more views...
14:10
i mean, that could be the case. with this whole 80s nostalgia cycle, we also got a bit of it's 50s influences as well. the song "if you're too shy let me know" by the 1975 takes a lot of inspiration from Huey Lewis, and, conscequentially, from it's 1950s classic rock influences.
Thanks for the movie playlist :)
I thought mid 90's was a great movie. I'm was born mid 80's so 80's and 90's stuff is right up my alley.
I really like the 80s. Cobra Kai did a great Job at recreating the 80s feeling
For 80s retro music, off the top of my head I would say Carpenter Brut, Perturbator, Shirobon, Waveshaper, Mega Drive, and Kavinsky.
I must add Com Truise and Robert Parker as well 👌🏼
Don’t forget the 9th season of American Horror Story: “1984” its an excellent homage to the 80s and very well done.
2012 : MANIAC
Missing movie:
-Hobo with a shotgun
Music:
-Gunship
-Perturbator
-Power love
-Lazer hawk
-Timecop 1983
-Carpenter Brut
Video games:
-Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
-Hotline Miami
-The messenger
-Katana Zero
-Axiom verge
-Cyber Shadow
I don't know if you overlooked or didnt enjoy it but ''Final Girl" was a pretty damn good homage and a well done parody of 80s Slasher horror films.
I just wish they had the rights to Friday the 13th when they made that
@@bonjovi7399 noooo was that their issue???? I never knew. Damn that’s fucked
I hope it keeps going. What's next? Grunge?
Yup
that's what it looks like
Beyond the Black Rainbow is the literally most underrated film of the 2000s. Everything owes to it, and Panos Cosmatos, these days.
New 80's style music coming out, examples on youtube. See SynthWave, Midnight, Gunship etc.
Kiran Govind which I find more interesting and emotional than any modern totally new synth music. Even the band must has gone all retro 80s synth wave. I think we are done, that's it. The 80s was the peak.
What about TRON ?
So glad you gave The Guest its dues. The Guest is what launched me into the world of retrowave with its soundtrack. That's where I discovered Omniverse by S U R V I V E who would later go on to score Stranger Things!
Such a shame this channel has so small subscribers count. It deserves better
Thanks man! I was looking at a channel just the other day with a quarter of my views but 4 times my subs and thinking "what the hell is wrong with my channel?", lol. It's good to know it is appreciated by some people.
@@StoryDive I enjoy your videos a lot. So keep it up man, everything will come in due time!)
one of the best video-game I ever played, the first and original Blood Dragon!!!
Pretty good selection of films, think you're missing the Netflix seriex Maniac which was both great and also undeniably 80s
And the 2012 remake of MANIAC.. with a very synthwave soundtrack ! (a lot like It follows)
Man your just listing all my favorites films of the last decade now. 👌👍
Altered Carbon and Mute need a worthy mention.
Loved this video. Big synthwave fan here. Hope there's a follow up to this :)
Thanks a lot for this list, I liked it
There's no nostalgia, it's just good
I think that the cycle you reference is solely a sociological phenomenon.
Because there is nothing about modern day media can offer us today because we traded out our willingness to take a risk and defy the social norm to abiding to the social norm with every fiber of the collective being of modern media.
finally someone who talks about the Guest
You literally forgot the biggest one, Ready Player One
Personally I hope it still keeps going - I've got a neo-80s movie I'm looking to make myself
Freaks & Geeks and Donnie Darko were a few of the first 80s throwbacks. Looks like the new Wonder Woman ‘84 is tapping into the aesthetic...
...oh, and the Watchmen also had a cool alternate universe 80s vibe.
Excellent video!
I felt, upon seeing it,that House of 1000 Corpses referenced the look and feel of both 70s horror films-with it’s Texas Chainsaw-like family, and the 80s with its color palette.
Could you please have a list in the description of all the movies covered in the video?
Check out my list. www.imdb.com/list/ls028313521/
this video makes me moister than an oyster. I'm not ready for the 80's retro wave to end and I 100 % don't want the 90's to replace it, these times they are a changin.. 😞
the Devil's Candy which is similar to Mandy would count as an 80s throwback wouldn't it? it's a Satanic Horror with lots of that 80s sounding music.
Thanks for the suggestion! I looked at that one in preparation for this video. Good horror film but didn't seem retro enough for me except for the 80s metal soundtrack...but maybe I should have included it.
Drive is my most favorite film ever
Stretching the definition a bit, but the new Mortal Kombat (2021) and Ready Player One are also great fits.
I also believe X Men Origins: Wolverine has a bit of this aesthetic as well.
Black mirror
26 periods cycle. Well done.
I think you forgot to mention the movie Hobo with a shotgun which is an homage to old exploitation films with a super 80s type of score and lighting. Also I have to mention this short Finnish film from 2016 called the defiler, which is a revenge story, with really 80s type of synth music, neon lights and really brutal action throughout the movie.
is defiler streamable anywhere?
san junipero (3×04) episode from Black Mirror although it's a anthology so jump into that episode you'll get some awesome 80's visuals!
You forgot Ready Player One which is literally the full representation of 80's nostalgia. Even more nostalgic than Stranger Things in my opinion.
House of The Devil is one of my favorite horror films of all time
I was amazed at how perfectly it seemed to capture an early John Carpenter vibe.
Exactly. I really haven't seen a horror film quite like it since. Ti West's next film The Innbetweeners had a similar feel, but wasn't really shot like that. And I just saw Mandy on Demmand about a week ago. Holy Shit. I watched it again the next day.
Btw, great video. I REALLY enjoyed it
I'm surprised you didn't mention the movie Cold In July. Extremely aesthetic in some ways with a keen John Carpenter feeling.
Dude I love The void!
Back to the Future 2 started the 80s trend to keep going
I'd probably add Mass Effect 1 there too as an example of 80s inspired scifi.
Excelent video.
Think we'll be seeing some superhero retro-wave films by the 2040s.
all these 80's movies spontaneously arose out of their specific time and place utilising the technology then available, even the 50s nostalgia ones felt genuine.. they came from a very natural and authentic place inside the creators, an innocent desire to express something.. the same cannot be said about the revivals.. they are all self conscious contrived and manipulative trying hard to be something that was once beautiful but they have no essence
Me and my bud discovered mandy on shutter earlier this year and wow. Just what the hell. Love it tho.
in my opinion, I think that the john wick films(specifically 2 and 3) are some of the best retro wave films to date. The movies definitely feel like an 80s action movie and the neon bathed visuals also make me think they were going for this aesthetic. Although, this is just my opinion. Also they make so much retro wave styled art around john wick.
80's retro style has to give many things
The Void was surprisingly good.
Hi StorydriveCan you show the difference between 80's editing to modern editing and storytelling.
I think for most 90s babies gta 3 ,vice and san kinda sparked that love for older music and pop culture 100 percent
Grosse Point Blank. The Wedding Singer
Yes you mentioned THE VOID
Moonbeam city is a great one season cartoon with 80s synthwave esthetic.
fear street is also a great trilogy (almost) like stranger things, its a must watch if you liked stranger things
Turbo Kid and Kung Fury are my favourite so far.
😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
I think the first must be the Boogie Nights
Damn this video is good, Im worried that this style will soon become overused *cough cough ready player one cough cough*.
Beyond The Black Rainbow. Has the best aesthetics..
well, there's all those Carpenter Brut videos...
I wish i was born in 80's ,i mean who wouldn't enjoy riding a bike with your friends going dome from school while listening to a lit music
