The Jimi Hendrix Experience perform "Are You Experienced?" at the historic COL Ballroom in Davenport, Iowa on August 11, 1968. Видеоклипы
1968, what a year! I saw Jimi play live 3 times that year. I also met him at The Village Gate nightclub that same year. I will be 70 years old next week, but Jimi will be young forever!
...wonderful...what did you talk about ?
@@cosmicman621 He was sitting across the room with Buddy Miles and The Express. I had just seen them that morning on American Bandstand. They told me that they had been traveling, and had missed it.(This was back before recording TV shows was possible. If you missed a show you just had to wait 40 years to see it on RUclips!). I turned to Jimi and told him how much I loved his music, and that he was teaching me a whole new way to play the guitar. He was very quiet and laid back, but friendly. I shook his hand, and to my 16 year old mind, I had come in contact with divinity! By the way, the show we were all there to see was a sizzling Blues Masterclass with King Curtis, Buddy Guy, and Albert King!!! A good time was had by all!
Unfortunately for him (and us) / passing at 27 makes you seem young forever / it's almost as if this World couldn't contain him !!!###
@@JohnnyNation I often wish I had followed that advice: "Live fast, Die young, Make a pretty corpse"! I certainly tried, but unfortunately I seem to be indestructible. OLD AGE SUCKS!!!

After hearing this; we are now experienced!
the intro is INSANE!
No matter how old we are....we keep our love for Jimi forever..and when I die..he will be there..
Jimi is the Greatest but he got a lot of inspiration from Mitch Mitchell, this guy was also one of the best drummers ever.
Very jazzy player
He made Ginger Baker take notice
No he didn't. He didn't even like Mitch. What song did the drummer inspire?
Exactly 💯
@KaiserBlade u couldn't be more wrong 😂
His ability to improvise is unmatched. New soundscapes just dripped off the man
I agree. What a mind he had and the daring to stretch himself in search of what only he really knew what he was looking.for.
Wish we had him here now, the world could really use a Jimi Hendrix in these times.

Ich möchte zurück in diese Zeit es war einfach die beste 👍
I'm Trying to get my Mind Together!
Well times were bad in his day too. We just don't have the good musicians like we used to back in the day. Trust Jesus though, he died for us all and with belief in him as our personal savior (John 3:16) it will be all right in the end.
Not even the Strat knew she could make those sounds. It took Jimi as the Strat Whisperer to show her. From then on, the Strat was Experienced.
Shit!
Nice comment. Very poetic.
Strat Whisperer..That's just super cool!!😁
It is worth noting that Jimi hardly ever played bone stock strats. Everything in his chain from the guitars to the pedals to the Marshalls were tweaked by Roger Mayer. A little bit here and there adds up. That said, he could damn sure make any strat/Fuzz face/Marshall JTM combo sing right off the rack.
Jimi Hendrix is the only guitarist I can listen to wail a guitar for a long period of time and not get on my nerves for a second
Guys like Vai, Malmsteen, Wylde are like the opposite for me - after 30 seconds I want to shoot the person who first put a guitar into their hands.
Raoul Duke Robin Trower
AMEN! Dr. Rauol Duke the greatest guitarist whom ever lived! Rip my friend, love and miss u so much!
@@voxpathfinder15r HE HE, LOL!, YEAH! Jimi's solo's are OUT OF THIS WORLD!
@@trevorgwelch7412 Robin Trower, no slouch, but only one Jimi Hendrix, not close enough..
Rocked this jam in my earbuds on the subway here in NYC on my way home tonight. The train speeding by different scenes along the way seemed surreal as we flew past. People walking past. It was all insanely beautiful with this blazing in my ears !🤘🤘🏾🔥
Thank you for rocking this out in a big city caught up by the current everyday hectic life.. jimi never dreamed his shows would be heard worldwide 50 years later. Bless u my friend
You forgot to mention the part where you dropped acid lol
And what happen to the weed ?
That's cool man. I could kinda visualize that in my head.
This is amazing! I was at that concert. And yes, it was mind blowing.
GREAT
I'm guessing you were high as fuck too? Lol. I would've been.
Kewl. I think the Col is still rocking, I was only 16 at the time and lived across the river on Illinois side.
Norma Edsill I hope you got some Photos Of Hendrix could be worth Big Money to Hendrix LLC
Did the Monkees play that night with him ? I recall they played some with him .
That is insane. It's isn't any wonder that Miles Davis respected Hendrix , went to one of his concerts , and made the Hendrix inspired album " Bitches Brew " and even went to his funeral.
Imagine if that session had've happened?!
Always plays like his life depends on it. That's what cuts so deep and makes you feel alive. Wakes your emotions from the anaesthetised state.
Right on!
His life did dpend on him puttin out..... CONSISTENTLY.
When Jimi started cancelling showz, ( Bcause he didn't have a bass player. ) whut happened?
from listening to his bad set in the Garden, NY, it seemed like Jimi was willing to sacrifice everything just to create some music impromtuo.
Some people improvize within a "zone" of comfort, but he was like: lets swing from WAAAY behind our asses and see if we can play. And it worked, every time.

I wish Jimi had da space 2 create com4tably, without hassle, & drama. Nstead of his management fighting wit him, I wish they were on da team, ready 2 help Hendrix conquer da world! Put up nterFEARence, when DUH hangerz on, got on his nervez, or wanted 2 steal from him, nstead of SINdin n spiez & rippin him off! Data way, Hendrix coulda contributed so much mo 2 our livez, than he did n those 3 ta 5 short yearz, from goin 2 London until his death.
I talk 2 a pal, all da time, about da woulda, coulda, shouldaz. Hendrix soloing on Judas Priest albumz. Hendrix soloin on Donna Summerz albumz & playin FUNky Wah wah stuff. Hendrix bcoming mo schooled & thus playing wit Jazz heavy-weightz, like Milez Davis & Spyro Gyro. Jean Luc Ponty & Hendrix, woulda been sumthin else! Hendrix n contrast 2 McLaughlin, a revelation!
WE WERE ROBBED!!!
Well said! And I bet he knew this for himself as he became that, "as though his life depended on it" because he really knew that it did. He was very clear minded about this. So fortunate for him to have that quality at such a young age, a rare quality indeed.
Btw, he also played Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at the Capitol Theater, March 1968. I didn't make it 'cause too young, but I've heard the decent recordings available, it was a great show as well, very small crowd makes for an intimate atmosphere here.
Given that we all only get to live once, he did it very well unfortunately short, he never once missed a note, never! He truly gave it all he had, all of it.
Truely Astounding! Forevermore....
Hendrix understood the importance of making the audience wait for it.
Ha.
I grew up in a family in the 1960s one of my sisters would listen too jimi n Janis constantly so when I was 13 I started listening too jimi he had passed by then and I’m in my 60s now I’m still into Hendrix sways have n always will there’s nobody like Hendrix nobody
Right on.
I second this - there will never be another Jimi Hendrix.
I was there, still have the poster. I was against the stage, right in front of his left foot.
He wasn't as loud as the two opening bands. Soft Machine was LOUD!
Could have gotten the poster signed, but didn't want to seem like that guy. It probably would be worth enough to pay my kid's college tuition for a year.
Liar as fck
+Billy Zoom Billy Bob fuck tard
+Billy Zoom Dude that's so freaking awesome!!!!!!!! OMG I loooooooove Jimi - Kudos to you!!
PapaKryptoss Guess my secret's out. :P
Yeah I saw you on those nasty sites...But you were amateur.
196 fking 8? That's like light years ahead its time. The kids were into Petula Clark, Simon and Garfunkel, Motown, Beach Boys, etc and then they hear this? I honestly think they were almost in shock.
He will always be remembered as Electric Circus I missed by a week as he broke the sound barrier rock on Mr Jimi. ❤🎉what mind expansion you were in the day
Can't wrong those for not getting Jimi. I remember hearing this album when it came out. He changed my introspect and much more. Hope to meet him on the other side and I won't be late.
DON'T BE LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t even explain or describe seeking Jimi in person. Unimaginable. Like a dream when you see him in person. I was not high like the other 30;000 people in the stadium. Stone cold sober. Amazing.
I also was also not high, the first time I saw Hendrix...but he somehow made me FEEL like I was on some kind of high!...and now, 55 years later, I still feel that way whenever I listen to his otherworldly music!
I wonder how many of these Iowan's were ready for this experience in 1968? Had to be mind blowing in little town like this.
Yup. Hey Billy, we seen this feller Jim Hendrix and that music was downright NARcotic music. It would have kept the Cows awake and they never would have given up milk; whooooooeee!
@@pbrucpaul Hey ass nice bigoted stereotype This ballroom had all the great bands from the thirties on.
.
would love to have a Time machine to go back to see the reactions
Davenport is not exactly a little town. It's one of the Quad Cities, quite a metropolitan area that doesn't get much coverage in the NYTimes or the LATimes or WaPo.
NOBODY in the World Was Ready
Enough licks and tricks to keep me going my whole lifetime. Thank you Jimi.
From cornfields to Hendrix .. the people here were surely blown away when jimi cranked up the marshalls on this day.. total mind melting.. lol
Jimi is the only guy I can listen to solo on a guitar for more than 30 seconds without getting bored
that intro was incredible!!!! He burnt the Iowa corn fields ablaze!!! Sounds like he was channeling some of that 1983 A Merman I should turn to be vibe in the extended solo section.....
indeed
Saw him ast Woodstock blown away
Joanne Jurgensen .. Woodstocks sucks .
Glad ur came out still alive
My Dad went. He stayed for it.
Lol lies
Jimi is the foundation of and culmination of late 20th century rock music. I hear approaches to music and riffs from the 90s and 00s in this post.
He wasn't a"rock" musician,Thank God.You need to broaden your horizons,at the very least.
During his solo you can hear some of the guitar lines from '1983' and he plays the main riff from "Third Stone from the Sun" using his vibrato bar on it. Amazing jazz like solo using Wes Montgomery type octave chords and very advanced and wildly creative & fluid soloing. Sometimes when he did "Are You Experienced" live he used 2 guitars...one to do the extreme synthesizer like 'sound paintings'
And another to do the solos and rest of the song because the other guitar would be so out of tune.
Yeah, he didn't play this alot. The best i have heard was from San Diego 68.
Yes! I was getting ready to post this. A Merman I Should Turn To Be (1983 second movement) in there.
Almost sounds a little like the Star Spangled Banner at one point. He could do anything.
I think he switched guitars here too, there’s a long section with just drums and bass where I think the switch takes place. He did that in the filmed version from MSG that used to be on here somewhere.
Rock songs flowed from Jimi's hands effortlessly
There not "Rock" songs -Thank Christ.
First song that I've downloaded on my PC, around 2000. Great song. Great musicians. Hendrix was a beast! For me its ubelievable hear this guy playing nowadays. What a pleasure hear this!
JIMI HENDRIX is still the BEST GUITARISTS , SONG WRITER , TO THIS DAY !!!!!! A MAN AHEAD OF HIS TIMES !!! CAN U IMAGINE IF HE LIVED & THE BARRIERS HE WOULD OF BROKE NOT TO MENTION THE WAY HE PLAYED THAT GUITAR HE HAD SO MUCH TO TEACH THE UPCOMING GUITARIST !!!!!!!!! IN MY OPINION JIMI HENDRIX IS & STILL IS THE BEST GUITARIST UP TO CURRENT TIMES !!!!!! I LOVE U JIMI HENDRIX ROCK ON MY BROTHER & MY MAN U WERE & ARE THE MOST PASSIONATE ROCK N ROLL ARTIST OF ALL TIMES !!!!!!!!!!!!! UR SO VERY LOVED N MISSED !!!MUCH LOVE N RESPECT KZYKRYN XOXOXO
WELL SAID HE HAW!

Eddie van Halen Smokes Hendrix
Listening to Jimi play took me very far away and I got sleepy for a while, until he started singing again. Alive again from a distant past, I came back to this present time once more.
The intro is killer. The background effect along with the normal strumming of the strings.. how the hell he create that dual effect???? My god incredible
Not from Guitar Center
he was unbelievable guitar player
THE BEST!
I don't think Jimi knew where this was going - free flowing on the edge of chaos -something played THROUGH him. He hit the improvisational motherlode in this version. ONLY Jimi Hendrix . . .Godlike.
I am 34 and wasn't even close to being able to see him live. But this is close as I'm gonna get. Just wow.
To hear this is like comming back home after a long journey
Been playing guitar for 17 years. I would guess so, but there will only ever be one Jimi. RIP
Once again his intro is amazing.. the rythym and lead guitar all at once from one guitar genius.. my god we need jimi today for proper inspiration
another Hendrix "sound painting" work of musical art.................
POETIC JUSTICE...\M/
Coltrane and Hendrix painted with sound. All others just play notes
I heard it first time the day Purple Haze was in RI. I had started playing guitar only a year earlier. Totally floored me. Within a year I was doing a long solo on Foxy Lady with one of the biggest bands in the state. Was very depressing where the music went after that. Still into Hendrix; Also adore Jefferson Airplane, Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Donovan, Zappa, Beach Boys.
ha ha...just to name a few!
The world is yet to catch up with Jimi !And they are far far behind!
This is by far my favorite Hendrix performance, wish it had a better quality audio
This is truly one of the best things of Jimi on the internet.
Just like I remember how JHE sounded on April 11, 1969! Wow takes me back, JH asked us the same thing, "How many of you are experienced?"
Just the best and still the best
An alien named Jimi Hendrix crash landed in a corn field in Iowa… 🚀 🎸
I was there! Wow is all I can say.
How loud was it? What was it like compared to listening to recordings?

I mean, I though I was experienced after all the years of listening to Hendrix, but sounds like I've reached a new level... Awesome take!
Right on! Jimi's playing is timeless! Regardless of the time he was here.....
Britt Rossman this is got to be Jimi in his prime
10-10-68 winterland aye is as good if not better than this one imo.
john doe have you heard the full uncut winterland shows ? Its amazing imo
yes . they are very good. quite a few guests he had on stage over those 3 nights. herbie rich on organ, virgil gonzales on flute, jack cassidy on bass. wish there was video of it.
Amazing sounds like from another planet!!! Then he does this live not studio its awesome how he can manufacture the same and better sounds live..
I was very fortunate to be at this show and in the years after have seen many shows but none compared to this one. Gave me a glimpse of possibility I had never seen before on many levels.
Been an avid fan for 30 years. The dude never fails to surprise! Four years of material, infinite imagination! Listen to that feedback! It's like the he's harnessing cosmic rays into sound waves! Fantastic!
the universe is full of sound
Wow ! Awsome ! This concert shows Hendrix truly in his element as Rock God / Magician. More psychodelic (if that is possible) than anything I've ever heard from him. A true sound artist. I'm getting a contact high just listening to this. He must have felt limited by the technology available in the studio at the time ; it was in concert where he truly innovated. This really gives a fresh perspective on Hendrix. Amazing ! Hendrix still lives !
What you said!
Eddie Kramer just figured out how to do Phasing in Stereo and he played a sample for Hendrix one day in the studio - and Hendrix fell on the floor laughing his head off - and then asked Eddie to play it again, and then fell on the floor again laughing his ass off - and said "My God - that's exactly the sound I heard in my dreams, I want that shit on everything from now on!" I think Hendrix was in a pretty progressive era at that point for technology. Now a days they make shit in digital, smaller, etc. But I still use the exact same effects Hendrix used, if anything we're the ones in a rut right now with not much being created anymore, except stupidly ridiculously expensive iPhones!
Love the long intro.. that whammy bar effect is mind blowing
Here he gives the ideal sound of aviation, soaring, driving the skies, the endless awe of the traveler and of the witness of what can feel unspeakable. Yet Jimi Hendrix more than speaks of it. Amazing these waves and how he soars. Totally immediate.
Love this. Was it 1968? Unsure, but I saw him at the "early show" at the Virginia Beach dome. He smashed a guitar for both the early and late shows. What a guy! Our parents took and picked us up.
In that year my future brother-in-law gave me his portable stereo record player and a pile of lp's--and "Are You Experienced?" was the one that rearranged my 14 yr.old molecular structure and gave me an unlikely feeling of great hope.
Amen to that, Thomas. My 19 yr. old neurons had no idea they could fire like that.
@@danielconroy8928 Haha! It's hard to convey the surprise of Hendrix to anyone who came later. No precedent at all.
How can anyone not like this, I mean really? God bless Jimi, and all of the music he created!
Timeless and awesome!!
Nothing like him really...he was way out there on his own.First heard him on pirate radio in 1966...I was just a young English teenager. It was like the music I had been waiting for...for me he was the complete package,he had it all...just listen to those first three albums..its all there....he was like a flash of lightning. So many great guitar players out there then and now.but Hendrix was a great musician and performer...he was truly inspired and gripped by a talent that he perhaps was starting to get to grips with.I saw him live at the Isle of Wight ,he was in a bad state but still managed to be way better than his peers.Above all Hendrix had soul..lots of these so called great players are just great guitar players...good for them with the fast licks and the flashy technique..but Hendrix had true blues and soul..above all he was a truly a great musician....and he allways tried to get out there..trying new things..striving.laughing at himself when he hit bum notes...a genius.
thanks for sharing this little gem. Iowa didn't know what hit 'em. Good god.
Aud : [Guy:] Fairport Convention!!...
Jimi : Like to ask one question before we start - Are you all experienced? It goes something like this here…
Wow, that opening is absolute killer. Thanks for sharing.
Love you Jimi, you're the best of all time, and thanks to you, I've been experienced, and when anyone's been experienced, they will always be.
Pure gold. Thank you. All praise to the bootleggers. And Jimi, founding father of the Electric Church.
Great Heavy Version !!!

Like Townsend said Jimi was a musical alchemist.
This is like an intense good trip
You youngsters don't know how we had to SEARCH for this music. Actually get up, go out, actively seek out, and use your own money and energy to physically bring home the music, only to share it for free with your very grateful friends. That's a real fan from back in the day. I know you are out there. Back when Hendrix was not yet a commodity in America. In fact, people thought we were a little backwards and strange listening to this music from the 60s, instead of the latest Led Zep album. I guess they needed Experience.
Victor Gaspar I'm jealous. I really do
WHAT?? I was 4 in '69 dude, and trust me, my uncles loved both so much. I've no idea what you're on about here at all man.
Victor Gaspar I hear you.
My granddad got his head kicked in by his classmates for saying that he wanted to listen to Hendrix, and when he complained to the teacher, he was sent to the headmaster who promptly gave him the whack and threatened to expel him from school. Som my granddad left school at the earliest opportunity and joined a hippy commune, met my grandma and became parents at the age of 16 - yeah, he was experienced! ᕙ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ᕗ
That’s great and all...But life was also better then yeah ? so be grateful you weren’t raised in this psychopathic controlled shit hole people still call society.Sure it was controlled then but Atleast things were simpler and there weren’t video advertisements blasting your face 24/7
I’m very grateful for everything because there’s a lot of good my general generation can work with, but the ‘back in my day’ and downtalking is so cliche, annoying and ignorant.
We’re good ‘kids’ and we seek out good music.
O....M....G... This version is awesome
Daaaaaaaaaamn. One of the best things in life is that wherever Hendrix went someone or other was trying to record him. Soooooo much amazing audio and video.
This kid is going to be famous one day!
Are You Experienced ! )))
I know I am...
yes, I am!
Definitely the definitive live version. Wish it was soundboard those little fills he does on the second change to the g/d or d/g chord in the verse is gorgeous
I was a junior in high school in 68 and saw the long line outside the Col ballroom and the $8 (?) cover. I'd heard Jimi's record on the radio but the rest of my friends didn't want to go. One of my biggest regrets in life. Thanks for posting this.
Steve Edwards you can bend over..., I’ll kick you in the A$$ if you like. I’ve done stupid things like that myself. Hahahaha
makes me feel like i'm on acid again. this used to be my favorite song to trip to.
i remember being so fucking high i couldn't flip the record so i just kept replaying the second half of this album and this song.. i felt like he was speaking to me directly. tripping the fuck out on that old ass Indian rug..
Far out June.
i love shit like this, this is exactly how jimi wanted people to feel
Wow..finally found this ! Thank you!
Thanks Jimi Hendrix ! Happy New years for 2020 .
That intro… is just unbelievable! 🙃❤️
If you can just get your mind together
Then come on across to me
We'll hold hands and then we'll watch the sunrise
From the bottom of the sea
But first, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Well, I have
I know, I know you probably scream and cry
That your little world won't let you go
But who in your measly little world
Are you trying to prove that
You're made out of gold and, eh, can't be sold
So, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Well, I have
Let me prove you...
Trumpets and violins I can hear in distance
I think they're calling our names
Maybe now you can't hear them, but you will
If you just take hold of my hand
Oh, but are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful...
ty so 💜much for posting one of my faves fm Jimi
Omg the intro!!! The howling whammy bar effect PLUS the other notes at the same damn time!!!! Masterpiece genius
The cleaned up version on Jimi Hendrix Concerts album is the bestest
Beyond perfect sound beyond this world.
