when i played hurling we did not run all over the place we would be killed if we wandered away from your Man, they had great brains and instincts. if u see old video of Mick Roche he let the ball do the work and was so neat, the connellys of galway etc
I had forgotten the Cork Athletics Ground and the primitive look of the place and the fellas stanting on the tin shed and the linseman's ball haven't heard that comment in forever....
Alot of comments on here about junior hurling and the standard of play but to be fair, I rather see more general play and ground hurling in the game today, with shoulders & overhead pulls. Very little handpassing in this and the weight of the ball meant it didn't travel very far. Not a fan of the modern possession game.
you can`t compare games long ago with nowadays..totally different approach to this amateur sport. in a world context, no runner of old days could compete against Usain Bolt..the same for long jump, swimming etc. so, ring was marvellous in his time..attracted huge crowds to games. no present player could do this.
the state of the pitch was absolutely atrocious back then! not to mention the standard of hurling...you would see better skill in a junior b hurling game today!
Yeah and everyone including renowned hurlers of the era says the hurling of cork and tipp was tough but very skilful.... and some great exponents of the game say differently but obviously you are an expert and know much better yourself... you'd probably say you can play better yourself? Seems its just junior b? Ya muppet ya
@@zzzaaa0990 No more ground hurling or doubling in the air. The clash of the ash has disappeared unfortuneately. All fumbling around in groups trying to get a light sliothar in the hand and then puck it over 100 metres.
The best player ever my hole??get real!!Its hockey!!mostly ground hurling,players today would piss them,look at the belly on ring then like,his not even an athlete!!!Im a cork man and I think this guy was probably the best ground hurler of his time.When i hear old men going on about he was the best!!!I guess when I get old i will say king henry,tommy walsh or Canning was the best and there will be some young fella telling me off haha.I thank them for such great days,except against cork haha.
We were lied to by our parents generation lol... The stories I heard growing up of these immortal hurlers of giants, by todays standard they are just a bunch of schoolboys hurling out in the local field.
They were great by the standards of the time.There was more first time hurling now all play is from the hand which has lead to the hurling ruck and slower play.The players are fitter and fast ,but there is very little first time off the cuff hurling any more
