I clicked on one of your videos last week when it randomly showed up on my feed. I was instantly hooked by your good humor, quality workmanship, honesty, and the way you don't take yourself too seriously. It took me until tonight to realize that you remind me of a former student I had. I taught him when he was a middle school student, and he and my youngest son were best friends. He took autos as part of our high school's CTE program and became a certified mechanic soon after graduation. He was always willing to help me with advice and guidance when I was working on my own vehicles, and never failed to stop by to show us his latest project vehicle. Unfortunately, he died in an automobile accident several years ago. Thank you for what you do, and the memories you brought back for me.
I had the same motor in my 3.6 Passat 4Motion. Glad I sold it after watching. If you don't live on either coast no one but the dealer will touch them. Glad to see a good mechanic with patience can work on anything. You are a dying breed Ray.
@@eaglerider1826 I did these kinds of things to a newb employee at a past company... I had him going around repeating my "sayings" ...they thought he was nutz...
By making that vacuum attachment integral with the valve cover they turned a 30 minute job into a 5hr 30min job. Probably increased the cost of the replacement part by 1500% as well.
Ray: I don't know why this job is supposed to take 5-6 hours but I'm sure I'll find out. Ray 3 minutes later: So I have to remove the liquid cooled alternator to get at the crank sensor so I can take out the dipstick, then maybe I can get a look at the intake manifold.
I really don't understand why it needs a liquid cooled alternator. They only generate a small amount of heat. They are inefficient, but it's not a lot of power. I think they average about 65-70% efficiency, so at max output they really aren't generating that much heat. Supposedly they are quieter and more reliable, but the bearing is what usually goes on them in my experience (I'm not a mechanic, so it is limited).
@@tarstarkusz I would wager it's actually to heat them. They're Euro's. They're designed for the Euro climate. To me (Mech for 12 years) it makes no sense either way.
I saw this comment before I got to that part in the video and thought it was a joke. Only the German automakers would actually design such a monstrosity.
I don’t watch to learn how to fix something. I watch to learn how this man has patience not to throw wrenches and hammers like I do. When I work on my car
I think the difference is that some people really enjoy the challenge of fixing things while most of us just want to get the damned thing working again.
@@tcj226 I think you are right. When I’m watching these videos and seeing Ray do his thing it looks so easy sometimes which fills me with confidence but when I’m faced with an issue on one of my vehicles that same confidence disappears like a dress on prom night and suddenly I just want to get it done and over with. I really admire Rays never ending supply of patience and perseverance.
To be honest with you if I start getting that excited where I got to start throwing stuff but I banging my head against swore best thing I can do is just walk away take a breather and come back when I calm down I'll do a lot less damage that way hey have a good day buddy don't let it get to you it's only a machine
You're a great mechanic and so funny. I love it when you mock the phone call sounds and when you drop something. Hilariously funny entertaining and and great info never stop. Thanks for all you do
I like your zen attitude with repairs. I find working on cars is a peaceful experience, which I call therapy. Most people I know get frustrated, swear, throw stuff, get all pissed off, then kick something and break a toe then repeat from swearing for a few cycles. It's just patience and observation to be one with the inner chakra of the vehicle.
Ray, I cannot express enough in telling that no matter how short or how long or how many parts of video you take, we enjoy every one of them. They are all educational and entertaining. Keep up the good work.
I just had to sell my car midway across the country because it needed a new head. i have no money right now and no car. i have a job so its ok, but your videos are the only thing that keep me smiling and going every day. thanks
GOOD LUCK SIR & try to have a MERRY CHRISTMAS. I know where you're at because I've been there, a few times & IT SUCKS. IT ONLY HAS TO GET BETTER REMEMBER THAT.
I have a nice Cruze for sale. SUPER easy to work on . 50mpg. 6 speed manual. If your in the Ohio area and interested it would be a great car. Have pics.
Due to watching these videos i went and got my self an electric rachet and wow took the wife's bumper radiator and thermostat off in just 15 mins on her vauxhall corsa,Fantastic tool, great vids as always 👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
5 or 6 years ago I got a whole ton of crap from my shop owner and the other techs I worked with because I ditched my air tools for electric ones (mostly, I still have an air hammer and a small die grinder for gasket cleanups) . Within 3 months they all owned a set as well. The snap-on guy gave me an ear full one day because I was using Dewalt impacts (which at the time cost half what the snap-on equivalent did). My Dewalt impacts are still killing it after 5+ years of daily commercial use, ive never even had a battery go bad. Paid for themselves about a million times over at this point. I have a couple milwaukee ratchets and they are pretty good too.
Old school pro tip for you especially on older/used vehicles when removing serpentine belts always check for the presence of the belt routing diagram. If it’s missing, a quick hand drawn map can save a considerable amount of time and frustration upon reinstalling
I've had my milkwaukee one for 4ish years and its a real life saver. The extended head would the one you want though, fitting the tool into some spots is pretty tough
4:10 it's just the same thing Germany mechanics say about American cars. And France. France car's are build so tight, last time I had one in the workshop, I needed 4 hours just to get to the shaft of the turbocharged
It's an Audi so I wouldn't be surprised. Replacing ignition coils and spark plugs on ... I think it's S4 RS is: 1. remove the front suspension. 2. Drop the engine. 3. Replace the ignition coils and spark plugs. 4. Reassemble in reverse order.
These have bullet proof timing gear. Even if the engine needed to be removed, for a truly skilled mechanic such as Jonny it is no big deal. That man pulls engines out of BMW's like nothing.
@@vw5056 you need to be able to get some BMW engines out quick as a lot of the newer one's have the timing chains at the rear, RAY as for this engine being W nope it,s a narrow angle V and two V,s make a W. Done a few narrow angle Lancia engines in the 70,s.
Rainman you are amazing the way you negotiate your way around a engine your mind must be constantly working out and the best thing I like is the problem solving, you'd have to be the best mechanical technician I've seen .
Audi's man. Had an A4 that needed an intake sensor replaced - no big deal, 3x bolts at the back of the engine easy peasy. Or at least it was, except the engine model in mine had a slight refresh, and instead of the bolts being accessible on top, they were now inverted and held the sensor (in the same place) from the underside. so while it was still 3 bolts, it was also, the entire intake manifold, the fuel and ignition rails, and probably a whole host of other parts I didn't get to. it went to a mechanic instead. I know enough to do it, not enough to fix it if I do it wrong.
the 2.5 V6 diesel is even more of a joy to work on. replacing the termostat means you need to take the enitre front off including the timing. 1500 bucks in labour to replace 7 bucks in parts.
Had similar with JLRs 2.0d and the vvt solenoids. On the rwd cars its a case of unplug and 2 bolts and its out. On the fwd cars its battery and housing out, intake out, egr off and then you can just about get onto it
Have a B6 Audi A4 1.8t. Take everything you know about automobiles and make it as hard as possible. I've always heard that German engineering was a good thing??
@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld The 2.8 V6 (not the VR6, the V6 in the Passat, A4, etc) was even worse...it had the 100,000 mile required replacement timing belts at the back of the engine block, so you had to actually pull out the engine from the car and remove the transmission to replace the belts under basic service....but the designers were so brilliant, the timing cover plate is in the way of mounting the engine to an engine stand, so you have to take the engine off an engine stand to get the timing covers off. VAG are great cars....if you only buy them brand new, or lease them new, with the intention to use them for couple years before moving onto something else. Definitely not the car you want to be the fourth or fifth owner on a used >100k vehicle.
Those smaller spring clamps are still a pain with the correct tool, it’s not the compressing them, it’s trying to move them back along the hose to their position. Nice work, good content.
I don’t own an Audi but I can see why they are popular, I’ve driven a couple and they are nice cars! Quiet responsive etc. gotta keep up on preventive maintenance like everything else!
I have a lot of trouble considering overengineering and unaffordable repairs owing purely to how its designed to be features of a "nice car". You can have a car that is luxurious and fast without it being like this.
i had aa audi ss quatro…replaced entire dash assembly twice under warranty…tech said each would have been $4500 if not under warranty. i sold it ss soon as i could…

Get a set of the remote cable clamp pliers. They can get into tight places like the ones you are using can't. Plus they lock in position. I do almost all VW/Audi/Mercedes and they are a life saver!
This is VR6 3.6L code: BLV. One of the good things about it. it has it’s own oil catch can. The one you touched in the corner were the noise was coming from. It is GDI engine with 2 set of injectors long and short depending on the cylinder position. I can shear a document on the same engine installed in VW Passat B6.

@@phillipsharpe6459 I haven't checked prices in uk since you guys dropped out of eu. No point of ordering anything anymore with the stupid high taxes. But at least in rest of europe the same is true as in the us. Japanese cars has a stupidly high prize premium compared to german cars. A coil for a bmw will be 25€ and for ex a toyota 200€. Also Japanese brands are expert's on discontinue parts for just 10+ year old cars. Especially Nissan. It almost impossible to get engine parts for the 2.4l gas from mid 2000s. @@Iceeeen do you work for BMW and get paid for spreading such nonsense? BMW also uses a lot of japanese parts, including coils and spark plugs since they are not manufacturing these engine parts either. It all depends on the particular engine design whether replacement parts are costly or not. Nissan has been owned by Renault since 1999, so if you want to complain about Nissan quality issues, there you have your reason. Funnily enough that you recommend french cars in the same post. Ray, I really appreciate these videos - they always show me which engines and vehicles to avoid for the best shape of my maintenance budget. Short version: All direct injection engines designed in Germany with exhaust gas recirculation. I would never buy a diesel anyway.
a while back I got my timing belt replaced (shitty 02 ford focus from EU) and soon after a small oil leak started. replaced parts and parts and over half a year later I found one of the camshafts leaking right behind the timing belt. that was annoying as hell, just paid so much and they did not charge for I dunno 50 bucks more to replace the three seals behind the timing belt. so I got specialized tools and had a lot of fun doing that myself. valve cover, belt, timing belt, alternator, engine mounts, you name it. As another VW Touareg platform based car owner, welcome to owning a German car. small repair that costs a small fortune is fairly typical. everything is cheap and runs fine until maintenance or repair time.
Going to start at Audi soon. Making the jump from Lexus/Toyota. This job looked like gravy, glad I found this video really shows what I have to look forward to lol
Mr Ray, as an Audi owner myself I must say that I am not envious of the work that you highlighted in this video. I have an A4 of the 2012 vintage and lots of the plastic that’s interacted with the most is fairly brittle. I just did my spark plugs and when trying to plug in the harness to the coil, the interior part of the plug on the harness side came loose and was wiggling around inside the connector. I just about “bricked” my car right then and there. Fortunately with the use of a couple small zip ties as spacers, I was able to get the harness clip’s “insides” to stay put and got the car up and running. On a similar note- Audis use pink/ purple coolant - I believe even as far back as the 2007 in this video. Cheers 🍻
If you had the Audi service manual, and sheets, you would be amazed how clever most of the stuff is, and when you know the tricks, and have the "special tool" for many functions, stuff does work very easy
I've now done a turbo swap, timing belt/water pump, and oil filter housing gaskets on my 2007 audi A4. What a pain in the ass Germans make it to do any kind of work on these cars. All doable, but usually a ton of things need to come off to get anything done. Oh, and dont' forget the infamous coolant hoses running to EVERY component in the car causing you to have to refill the coolant everytime you do a job on the car...Other than that, fun cars
I recently got rid of my 2008 A6 Quattro. 176k miles. Ran great when it ran great. Replaced valve cover gasket twice. Always leaked oil into spark plug wells . Was a lower rubber gasket that leaked and you had to remove top of head and cams etc to get to it. Then steering wheel assembly or something like that to the tune of 2600. Loved the car when it was newer. Oh - almost forgot. Electric cooling fan went out. That was going to be another 1300. Drive it with no fan for a year and a half. Finally had enough and traded it in to car max and bought my wife a Toyota Highlander. Only reason I watched this video was to watch someone else get into the engine and say - wtf?……. Why did they do it like that,!!,,,,,,,,,
I have to say I’m stuck in bed my back not working, and slowly making my way through your videos to keep me smiling 🙂 if you are any good at back work, then pop over to England 🏴 keep up the good work and stay safe. If you get time over the Christmas holidays check out the Indian workshops it amazing back to more videos 👏👏👏👏
A W engine would make a V out of two of these VR's. The VR, as far as I know is strictly a VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) thing, so anything tied to them can have them. And welcome to Euro-cars, where we spend more time taking stuff out of the way whilst trying not to break said stuff, than we do actually replacing the faulty part. It needs to be a compact drive unit so we can fit it into as many cars as possible and never mind some poor wrenchmonkey in the future.
There were more VR engines, like Lancia VR4, also "W" engines can be found in more luxurious car from "VAG" company. Like Passat B5 4.0, Bugatti 16 cyl (2x VR8 -> W16), Phaeton and Bentleys W12 (2x VR6). There were also VR5 in Golf Mk4 and similar cars. It's quite good engine, but first iterations of VR6 were so underpowered that 2.0 ABF was detuned from factory, because it was making more hp from 2.0 than 2.7/2.8 VR6. You can get pretty good hp from ABF with 1.8 16v GTI motor called KR intake. Also it's possible to get around 200hp from N/A 2.0 with simple mods like that :D Greetings from Poland :)

@Alfred Wedmore Well sir I don't run my alternator constantly through a deep puddle . If it was been engineered this way then I'm sure it is logical for the engineer . I just thought it sounded strange . I didn't mean to upset you .
I think the reason they use the triple square ( and torx) type bolts is its easier for the robots building the cars to index the tool to the bolt. Maybe someone in manufacturing can confirm or refute that.
Yes, they were in use before robots, dedicated automated bolt tightening fixtures had sprung loaded sockets, with mechanical, then later electronic control, Atlas Copco were leaders in this area I think, this is based on my travels in Europe, Ingersoll Rand also built these. The Torx or multi spline heads use less material when compared to a Hex head of SHCS (Allen), and are a little easier to form and heat treat. Hope this helps.
Looks pretty straightforward. If it were a GM, they would give you 1.5hrs. Their warranty book time for a 6l80 4wd trans r&r and rebuild is like 6 hrs.
@@mph5896 it isn't that bad. A German engineer is now thinking how he can make it much worse. Larger engines fit in that engine compartment, so that's probably why it was fairly simple in that application
@@kevinbarry71 yes. VW/AUDI stuff these massive engines in their cars. And almost always requires removing the front clip. Headlights/radiator/condesor/core support. On top of that many of the engines have their timing components on the back of the engine requiring removing the engine to replace the timing chains. VW and Audi use very cheaply made plastic too.
@@Questchaun yes, the infamous service position. Essentially disassemble the whole front of the car. And that's before you actually do anything. Never ask a mechanic who works on German cars to fix anything you own, because they'll always take the whole front of it apart. It's just a habit, they can't help it. Yes, timing set on the back. Absolutely brilliant. Nobody could do that like the Germans. Or, like the Volkswagen 2 L gasoline engine; turbo charged one. It has a timing chain in the front and a timing belt in the back. Only Germans could come up with such an idea. Not to mention, trying to make all the different fasteners different sizes, and making sure that some of them are proprietary so you have to buy tools just for that piece. And, they are basically designed to wear out and be replaced. The whole car.

Hey Ray! I just love my 1 pound, 18mm triple -square socket for VW rear wheel bearing bolts. Plus, I like needing both long and stubby ones to change the serpentine belt.
Dear Ray: purchase a selection of plastic vacuum plugs and caps. You can quickly plug small radiator hoses, but especially cap off brake lines. Works for me. Peace ✌🏻
Amazing how many vehicles from 2012-2014 need major repairs. Like my Tier 1 suppliers have told "We design and manufacture our stuff to last 36,001 miles"
Certainly planned obsolescence. That is why BMW has no issues with "complimentary maintenance" for 3 years because all parts are designed to at least get you that far. But the 2nd owner is going to be the biggest suckered after the lease!
Almost perfect, except taking off that old valve cover, I was hoping till the end you'll vacuum that mouse shit to not it fall to the engine. What would you do if the shit fall there?
I'm sure someones already said it, but thats a VR6, a inline v, the W engine takes two VR banks and makes a V out of them, and I believe its only the VW group that uses that configuration. Great video, I don't miss working on my VW, more power to you and happy holidays Ray.
Finally, one of those single-head V6 engines in a video! I like the way the radiator hoses go to the rear of the engine, the rear timing chains, and the water-cooled alternator.... Amazing engineering there....well worth the extra cost to manufacture and maintain - NOT. WAIT!!!!! Where is the water pump?????? Let's say the owner wanted new coolant hoses - how in the world would you get them all identified and ordered - and how many would need to be sent back because they were the wrong ones????? Yowza!
@@nickwells55 except these are not known for needing the timing chains nor tensioners replaced. I am on a VW forum and guys are running these VR6 powered trucks with 200k miles or more on factory timing gear.
@@jt8280 it's a 15 degree v, they've been doing that since the mk3 golf with the vr6 engine, it's also the same thing in a bugatti, just in a v configuration but still offset the same way to make the engine shorter
That radiator clip, is the same for all vag models with that type, they’re used on the boost hoses too. Put the clip over the fitting first in a nice open space and then it just ‘clicks’ into place. So much easier than trying to get the clip over the hose and fitting in the tight space.
Hello, Ray! I'm sure this has been suggested, but I might as well... Wouldn't getting a cheap tablet and hooking the camera to it make it easier to see in tight spaces? Like in this car, where it's *precision* german engineering, not *well-designed-for-maintenance* german engineering...
I love working on these german cars, I'm not joking, these engines can be significantly simplified and bulletprofed if you spend the time and money, but for most customers its not worth it, you can just replace the PCV valve on these, FCPEuro sells replacement units, and then you don't have to replace the entire valve cover, these engines are great fun when in the smaller golf and jetta platforms.
@@xabhax I have to dissagree with you, almos every car maker knows how to make cars, its just, that they are built for different things, that GTI will break your bank once it starts having issues, and it is way slower than the type R, but its way more comfortable, has a nicer interior, and way better technology and build quality, the japanese know how to build fast cars, and reliable cars, some even very comfortable cars, the germans, well, they put all of these 3 together, but at a cost.
Merry Christmas, Ray! My first attempt would have been a little prep on the valve cover followed by a dab of JB Weld. It may not work but there’s nothing to lose by trying.
The small port is there to let atmospheric pressure in, it works to counter-act the vacuum made to operate the PCV valve. Plugging it could/would lead to blowing other gaskets not meant to withstand blow-bye gas pressures. Which could lead to a total engine failure. It all could have been designed with a removable cap with replaceable diaphragm. But no one ever asks the mechanic, nor wants to.
Today I drank coffee from my Rainman Rays coffee cup, put my new sticker on my safe and wore my new "It's a lifestyle" shirt. Thanks for the great content!
I think this type of engine would be considered a VR6, not a W6. there was a W8 on the Passat, which was basically 2 "VR4" in a V configuration. There was not dedicated VR4 engine. There was also a W12 engine on the Phaeton, with 2 VR6 in a V configuration.

It is a VR6. I briefly owned a 2007 Q7 Premium several years ago. Nice car, but expensive to maintain. It had 150k on it and the water pump had never been done. I knew I was on borrowed time and dumped it before the pump failed. If memory serves, it's a 16 hour job. VR6 is a neat engine since it's a narrow angle V6 that uses one cylinder head instead of one for each bank. Basically it's an Inline V configuration.
It never ceases to amaze me that a machine that complex would have a tiny little defect that takes a days worth of labor to replace.. and i always hated jobs like that. It kinda feels like you drove to the grand canyon from florida pulled up got out, took one picture then turned around and went home.
I had an Audi A6 about two years ago. Everything in that car was so over engineered. And the thing is that did not make the car more reliable, just more expensive to repair. Also, VW owns Audi, so they are actually very similar.
Good on you! So many folks neglect the watering of the crank shaft position sensor connector. WOW! You are on fire today! Before I could yell it out you were fixing the 710 cap which was initially installed backwards. Real Ray fans say "cliiiick!" when we mash the like button. Stay safe, and stay awesome.
Other engines: PCV is a simple, cheap part that is easily accessible and takes 10 seconds to replace. German engineers: we should make that part of a much bigger expensive part that requires 5 hours to replace.
Not a W configuration, but a VR6 (long crazy German name). Basically a staggered 6 with a 15* cylinder angle. A W engine like the Bugatti and VW W8 Passat use 2 banks of staggered cylinders. Real cool, but super complicated and very finiky when you go that far

we have medieval cities and the roads that go with it. So jamming everything in a way too small engine bay is almost a necessity. If you would have Ray's truck in my town, everybody would think you are a massive idiot. The germans do what they do not solely to annoy mechanics. :P
Word to the wise when working on ANY German car; always review the job in All-Data or Mitchell's......the Germans like to use A LOT of one time use only bolts. You don't want to find that out the hard way. Also important to follow the torque specs for real, again, you don't want to find out the hardware why. Just my two cents..........keep up the fight.
@@dragonmaker1541 They are called, TDY bolts. Torque to Yield. After they get torqued, they stretch some and technically can not be used again. They are always steel, not aluminum.

Ray 3 minutes later: So I have to remove the liquid cooled alternator to get at the crank sensor so I can take out the dipstick, then maybe I can get a look at the intake manifold.
I read your comment early, and was sure you were joking about a liquid cooled alternator. Well, I would have lost that bet.

4:10 it's just the same thing Germany mechanics say about American cars. And France. France car's are build so tight, last time I had one in the workshop, I needed 4 hours just to get to the shaft of the turbocharged
Looks like an engine out job to change the timing chains !! Gotta love it !
Yes. According to Car Wizard it's a book time of 40 hours on the V8. V6 is probably similar...
Yup, remind me to never work on German junk.
It's an Audi so I wouldn't be surprised. Replacing ignition coils and spark plugs on ... I think it's S4 RS is:
1. remove the front suspension.
Cool how the timing chain is in the back. Perfect for engine out services.
It's traditionally a transverse mounted engine. :)
My old flathead Fords had a timing gear on the camshaft direct chain connected to the crankshaft. I could change one in about an hour.
And then you get a Ford V6 with a front AND a back timing chain.

Yeah, he was pouring antifreeze right next to all that rodent stuff just outside the filler tube....:(
First time I've ever seen a water cooled alternator, good job Ray
The Cadillac Northstar had a watercooled alternator around 95/96.

While you can get almost anything even on a 30 year old mb, bmw or vw
If you can wrench on your own cars, avoid Japanese and go german if you are on a budget, or even some french
@@Iceeeen do you work for BMW and get paid for spreading such nonsense? BMW also uses a lot of japanese parts, including coils and spark plugs since they are not manufacturing these engine parts either. It all depends on the particular engine design whether replacement parts are costly or not. What makes german car maintenance so expensive is their stupid design (as shown with this Audi) and their tendency to use cheap plastic crap that breaks very fast.
Nissan has been owned by Renault since 1999, so if you want to complain about Nissan quality issues, there you have your reason. Funnily enough that you recommend french cars in the same post. Don’t compare modern german cara with solid cars from the 80s, it’s a pointless comparison. What kind of hack are you, seriously?

So they charge per the book- 6 hours at $325=$1,950. Since they see the same issues ALL THE TIME, they very likely knew what the issue was and fixed it in
@@MOAB-UT Well, you just asked what the book time was, and I gave you that answer xd No need to unleash your built up frustration on me and explain stuff I didn't even ask about lol
@@benjamin-sch LOL. I never asked about book time. How- when I was obviously being facetious and calling out the bogusness of "book times." Book time as well as the infamous "check engine light" scams are major drivers of revenue for all stealerships.
Just because you fail to grasp simple concepts does not make me frustrated...though I suppose I would be if I had to continue to try to explain simple things to people like you- you seem fairly clueless.
Again, perhaps you missed it so I will repeat it s l o w l y. I worked in the service department of a major automotive dealership. I've also turned wrenches for many years and have forgotten more about cars then you will ever know. Trust me, dealerships are all about getting customers money. But go ahead, lean into your conditioned response and run to your dealer in a panic when that little light comes on the dash of your Hyundai. Let them quote you book times and then pay them in full.
I was made above all but success.
the thing is, very small things can turn out to be a hell of a lot of work for oneself or a lot of money for others. don't just let it slip, keep your cars in good and safe condition for yourself and everyone else.

well, you know, it's a job he does for his salary... also, since it's one car and many billable hours it's the best type of job, no stops and "nothing to do until next customer" and so on. ;)
Changing the oil all day isn't really that glamorous, or interesting and you have a bunch of space in time between the jobs so you make less money overall (I think, I don't know how he gets payed but assume he doesn't get payed to sit and do nothing...)

Cheers 🍻
I would have put that car on Craigslist right after you got it running.

"coolant hose for the alternator." Blows my mind. I'm gonna have to think on this.
So true . We have a rotating electrical part so let's run water through it .
@Alfred Wedmore Well sir I don't run my alternator constantly through a deep puddle . If it was been engineered this way then I'm sure it is logical for the engineer . I just thought it sounded strange . I didn't mean to upset you .
Ray beats rate. Makes it rain for the man. One reeeeeee though for not blowing the crap away from the filler cap when you added the coolant.
I think the reason they use the triple square ( and torx) type bolts is its easier for the robots building the cars to index the tool to the bolt. Maybe someone in manufacturing can confirm or refute that.
Need robots to disassemble the car also
Yes, they were in use before robots, dedicated automated bolt tightening fixtures had sprung loaded sockets, with mechanical, then later electronic control, Atlas Copco were leaders in this area I think, this is based on my travels in Europe, Ingersoll Rand also built these. The Torx or multi spline heads use less material when compared to a Hex head of SHCS (Allen), and are a little easier to form and heat treat. Hope this helps.
Good point. It's all about efficiency.
triple square?
you mean splined heads like they've used in the ford pinto head bolts that have been used since the 80's 🤣
robots from other manufacturers will go on strike because they do not use that type of bolt.
Hose pliers are legit! Great work.
Ray, says he doesn't know why this job is listed as six hours. Me, laughs hysterically
@UC9aCC4v63PTmr2iFWpgoMEQ I doubt if he moves fast. Prob takes his time and is very methodical. GM just wants you hack their garbage back together.
Been leasing or buying Audis for 30 years. Some quirky electrical issues now and again, but that’s Audi. FYI, it’s pronounced “owdee” rather than “awdee”. Great vid, as usual.
Hey Ray! I just love my 1 pound, 18mm triple -square socket for VW rear wheel bearing bolts. Plus, I like needing both long and stubby ones to change the serpentine belt.
Best mechanic 👨🔧 in RUclips .
Hi Ray, another good video, thanks. I would have been interested in finding out what actual part failed inside the valve cover.
it was the pcv valve
It probably had some sort of an internal diaphragm and like the old fuel pumps they leak out the pin hole on the cover have a good day
Dear Ray: purchase a selection of plastic vacuum plugs and caps.
Even as a noob mechanic, I put those hose clamp pliers on my Xmas list !!! :)
Yowza!

Thank you for helping me be a more informed consumer
I love working on these german cars, I'm not joking, these engines can be significantly simplified and bulletprofed if you spend the time and money, but for most customers its not worth it, you can just replace the PCV valve on these, FCPEuro sells replacement units, and then you don't have to replace the entire valve cover, these engines are great fun when in the smaller golf and jetta platforms.
They are even better in the SUV's due to more access in the engine bay.
@@vw5056 I mean, they are easier to repair, but I'll take this Q7 with a way biger V8 any other day than this 3.6VR6
We call the 4 square bolts on the belt tensioner spline head bolts like you stated as opposed to hex head or torx head bolts.❤❤❤❤❤
Merry Christmas, Ray! My first attempt would have been a little prep on the valve cover followed by a dab of JB Weld. It may not work but there’s nothing to lose by trying.
The hole is supposed to be there. Its an INTERNAL LEAK.
No hobo fixes on a newer Audi
The small port is there to let atmospheric pressure in, it works to counter-act the vacuum made to operate the PCV valve. Plugging it could/would lead to blowing other gaskets not meant to withstand blow-bye gas pressures. Which could lead to a total engine failure. It all could have been designed with a removable cap with replaceable diaphragm. But no one ever asks the mechanic, nor wants to.
@@McLilWilli Thanks. Color me clueless.
I thought it was a VR6

There's even a V5 engine, one bank of 3cyl, the other with 2 cyl, all under 1 head.

It kinda feels like you drove to the grand canyon from florida pulled up got out, took one picture then turned around and went home.
I had an Audi A6 about two years ago. Everything in that car was so over engineered. And the thing is that did not make the car more reliable, just more expensive to repair. Also, VW owns Audi, so they are actually very similar.

every time i see an Audi being worked on im super happy i diddent perches one
Not a W configuration, but a VR6 (long crazy German name). Basically a staggered 6 with a 15* cylinder angle. A W engine like the Bugatti and VW W8 Passat use 2 banks of staggered cylinders. Real cool, but super complicated and very finiky when you go that far
