We have a mosque, a Hindu temple, a Buddhist temple and a Methodist church along a 400 metre stretch along South Bridge Road. They coexist without problem whatsoever. This is our national pride.

For the longest time that spiral staircase at Fort Canning Hill was a deserted relic of Singapore red brick National Library. It became a tourist attraction after someone posted on instagram and suddenly it became an overnight sensation. Shows the power of social media.

To add on to this, Singapore has one of the highest occurrences of lightning strikes in the world. Do what the locals do, take shelter in a mall, MRT station or hawker centre during thunderstorms. Lightning strikes can be deadly in Singapore and there was a year that it caused 5 deaths.

Hawker centres are actually street food halls. Many of these 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation stalls were selling their food on the streets during the just after WWII in 1940s to late 1970s. They were relocated to hawker centres by the Govenment between 1970s to mid 1980s so as to improve sanitation and hygiene.
Bak Kut Teh is a pork rib soup usually accompanied with Chinese tea. "Bak Kut" is Hokkien/Teochew for Pork ribs and "Teh" refers to the Chinese tea and not the soup.

There are several other important historical relics on Fort Canning.

I grew up living in Little India! We used to go to Tekka market all the time, there are some really good stalls there, their prata is delicious.
I used to go to ballet classes in Fort Canning, but the place has long since been revamped haha. There's usually fun exhibits/shows up there!
The "Warming Rice Noodle" store that you took a shot of-- the Chinese name actually reads "Nameless Rice Noodles", lol.
The statue that you spotted at 22:23 is a samsui woman. They're known for wearing mostly blue or black clothes with a red headcloth-- they were immigrant women from China who did hard labor jobs in the early 1900s, because the British were still the masters here then and they limited male Chinese immigrants but not female ones, so a lot of women immigrated to Singapore for a better life.

Lee Kuan Yew was the first Prime Minister of Singapore, and he passed away in March 2015.
Also as you walk through the Fort Canning Gates, hidden behind one of the large doors is actually a staircase heading up to the top of the gates. It looks nicer at night!
As for Bak Kut Teh, there are many types around Singapore, from the peppery soup type, to the herbal soup type, to other variants in-between. It really needs trying out at different brands of shops to find your fave. The known brands here are Ng Ah Sio, Old Street, Song Fa, Kai Juan, and Founders' to name 5 out of many.
Oh yea lastly, check out Hong Lim Food Center next to Chinatown Point, or People's Park Complex food center. The latter has a whole bunch of stores and hidden shops upstairs.

Fort Canning Park used to be Singapore’s own imperial garden landscape in ancient times during the purported reign of the 5 kings of Singapura in the 14th century. This is the original name of this royal city state which is Sanskrit for Lion City whereas ‘Singapore’ is the anglicised term during colonial times for British administrative purposes. However, the island itself used to be called Temasek meaning seaport. There at the crest of Fort Canning Park used to sit the palace of the 5 rajas of Singapura; presently the area is protected by meshed fences but you can still see the rain catchment reservoir inside from without. Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore used to write that if fate dictated he was to die in southeast Asia, he would like his bones to be interred at Fort Canning among the graves of the kings of Singapura

You guys really did your research. I'm impressed. First time i see a travel channel that explores local sights and the heartlands. Personally not a fan of the fake tourism in Singapore as it hides the true sights and sounds of the country.
If you have time you can consider touring neighbourhood estates, their local malls, eateries, beaches, parks and recreational areas. Most of the sites you visit are historical(Little India, Chinatown, Geylang) or futuristic(CBD, Orchard). The neighbourhoods represent the present.

It’s definitely feasible, albeit under the scorching sun given our climate. I’m a Singaporean female and I’m 56. On my days when I feel like out and about, I’ll take a bus to Little India, walk around it and have a masala tea. Then I walk to Arab street and explore the many quaint alleys and shops and enjoy a beer or 2 there. Next I walked to Bras Basah, Bugis Junction, Raffles Hotel and Raffles City and Funan Mall. All done within 5 hours. And I thoroughly enjoyed myself. 😊

The tea in Bak Kut Teh I think it is separate from the main dish, it used to be serve along side a pot of chinese tea to cut down the greasiness of the pork ribs. Not sure why, but someone who is more knowledgeable can explain it better. At least that is how I remember it at the old Hong Lim Market Bak Kut Teh store, there used have a heater with each table to boil water to make the tea, they got this cute little chinese tea set with small little cups and a packet of Iron Buddha tea leaves. Maybe nowadays it is not so common as they tend to use Prime Ribs compared to spare ribs which is not as oily.

Lots of channels and websites like Roots, have cashed in on the story and ran with it. I used to work with the ministry of the information arts.. It is a strange question rooted in western ignorant and prejudice.
China and Singapore are distinct. Even across China, the differences are huge.
English is the working and daily language in Singapore.

Singapore is definitely different from China! 😅 Singaporeans speak English readily. Unless you interact with migrant workers from China, India, Myanmar etc who are generally in the service industry, you will have no issues speaking English here.
I’m Singaporean, and I travel to China often for sightseeing and food. Hardly anyone speaks English there, except a handful of young graduates. The young people may understand simple English and speak it only if necessary. Their mother tongue is Putonghua 普通话 mandarin . I do meet Americans who even live and work there and they have no issues with integrating into the Chinese community, at least with the use of Google translate. 😅

Those people queuing for that IG-able photo shot at the staircases have to be tourists. And if they been posing for decades oblivious to the queue behind them, guess which country they come from? :-)
