The person on the ‘throne’ is a medium. The deity will descend on him and possess him. These mediums are chosen by the deities for the purpose of helping the people. The Hungry Ghost Festival is more of a Taoist festival than a Buddhist festival. Buddhists don’t burn those paper offerings to the dead.

Awesome video. Thank you, Mike and Gigi, for sharing our Chinese culture with the world. Love you both and stay healthy and blessing from Singapore. 💗💗💗🙏🙏🙏
Hello, Mike and Gigi. Nice to see you both again. Oh wow, what a brilliant video !! Great of you both to show to the world how Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated every year. (7th month of the Chinese calendar) This video is exceedingly well done. Thanks a bunch for sharing it with us. Have a wonderful weekend ❤️💞
This period is also known as ,中元節與盂蘭盆節 ,in Chinese or Ullambana in Sanskrit which means "deliverance from suffering," and specifically refers to the salvation of anguished souls in Hell. This concept originates from the Buddhist legend of " Maudgalyayana (Moginlin or Mogganalla) saving His Mother from Hades." Hence, the Ullambana festival reinforces the important concept of filial piety which is very deep-rooted in Asian culture.
Thank you very much for this sharing 🙏🙇♀️ As Chinese, it is my first time witnessing through your channel the real experience. For Buddhists, offering and burning for ancestors.
Most important rule is the offering on the roadside is meant for the hungry ghosts , some foreign worker think is a waste of the food so they will pick up the food after we pray and some will complain that the food is bland , no taste.
Countless RUclipsrs, while covering Singapore, aways feature the same places like Gardens By The Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Haji Lane, Chinatown, Little India etc. So, it is so refreshing that you cover the Ghost Festival in such details. But being Romanians, you have neglected your country’s most infamous supernatural icon on your channel. Hopefully when you return home, you would do a series or a segment on Dracula, featuring his hometown Transylvania, its townsfolk, Dracula festival & merchandise, and most importantly, take us inside the Dracula castle. On your Ghost Festival segment, the hosts of the 7th Month show had no idea where Romania is. Well, you take us all over world, but have yet to introduce your beautiful country to us. You should be its cultural ambassadors, do a series on your country, its various customs, festivals, cities and tourist destinations. So, looking forward to you being your country’s tour guides, I am sure all viewers will be enchanted by its Eastern European charm.
Hey, thx for the nice words, we do have a playlist of Romanian videos including the Dracula castle just look for the playlist titled "Romania" 😎 nevertheless we'll plan on making newer ones also 😅
Actually, the Hungry Ghost Festival is only 1 day, only on the 15th day of the Chinese 7th month. The entire 7th month is called the Ghost Month. During this month, we also pay respects to the ancestors too. The key point in the 7th month is respect - respect the culture, respect the beliefs but do not have to be scared of anything. 😉 You guys have the rarest luck to be able to witness the local 7th month culture. 😊 The guy sitting on the throne with the knife step has a certain god taken over his body temporarily, whom (the god) has been invited to bless the business organisation & the ceremony.
18:0318:03 The 10 things u said to avoid is v accurate info. I didnt even know about the covering of forehead. You are real tourists, taking time to really to experience our culture. When in doubt, do not touch anything or anyone or say anything during these 7th month celebrations. Everything u see will be odd to you. Just be careful not to cause offence unknowingly. Be careful. Stay safe. Enjoy yourselves in Singapore. PS Wow, wish i had the opportunity like you to travel the world and really mmerse myself in all these interesting cultures!
Hello, Three years ago we saw booth of you in Bangladesh, Do you always stay on traveling? Is this your full time work? Like to see you again in Bangladesh.
Buddha actually told him to make merit by offering food to the monks after their rainy season retreat. The merit acquired can be transfered to his mother to help deliver her from the hungry ghost realm.
As a new gen Singapore Chinese born again in Christ, I do not observe this tradition. It's mostly the Malaysian Chinese who bring in this "old fashioned" (pagan) culture into the country.
That's because when the CCP took power, they banned all old culture and traditions which they deemed as superstitious, backward and unscientific. The Cultural Revolution saw the destruction of many temples and relics of the past. Everyone in China has to 'worship' the new 'god' aka the CCP. 😢
Hi, i'm gary from S'pore. Nice knowing u tried to find out the meaning of the ghost month. However, i'd like u to know that STEPPING or EATING those prayers food on the grass verge are strictly FORBIDDEN. There are cases n stories of how these people will suddenly GO MAD, CRAZY etc etc etc. Anyway, nice video n narration by the both of u.
The offerings on the floor with the toys are for child spirits. Those on tables with empty chairs for the spirits to sit and enjoy the festivities held for them before they return to their realm on the last day of 7th month of Chinese lunar calendar
Hungry ghost festival fall on lunar calendar the 7th. It last for the entire month. Normally ceremony will be held on the 1st 15th and 30th. If you ever attend hungry ghost festival. If there are performances set and there is rows of seats. Please do not seat on the first row and it is reserved for the ghost.
Yeah super agree human hearts is more scary than ghost, if the spirit wants to harm the person the spirit will do directly attacking a person mind, compare human will back stab another human die also without knowing why
15:08, is something called Tongji or JiTong, it's a spirit medium of sorts, believe it or not. A person who is connected/fated/unluckily enough to be asked to become a medium and help with the Higher Spirits' work (their religion deities), becoming a JiTong. An ambassador of the Higher Spirit represent the Higher Spirit, possess this JiTong and do consultation work and participate in festivities like this, and people pray to them while the JiTong is possessed. There are also people who fake being a JiTong, and it also begs the question whether these paranormal is real to begin with.
The cycles of birth and death , in Taoism or Buddhism. Heavenly realm, 33 thousand gods , for Toaist's and hell realm . Thanks for your video , and a bless journey. 🙏
The 11 thing…you should not wear black T-shirt at night. 👻 The hell gate is open during this month because the storey goes that filial piety young monk broke open the hell gate to save his mother’s soul before she was sent through the 18 chambers of death of no return.

What Buddha said is offering to the monks who finish the 3 months retreat. Which falls on Indian “7 month “ not Chinese 7 month , should be at October . Some monks has attain enlightenment during the retreat or a least increase their spiritual power , so offering to them had great “ merit “ . Dedicate the merit to the deceased one will reduce their bad Karma and increase their good karma !

Not the new false God of Christ
China doesn’t have this celebration is because of they are under the communist ruling

At 15:11, it was when the "medium" person was trying to get possessed by deity spirit, however something interrupted him and he went away
My only question is why do the Chinese living in Australia do not observe the Hungry Ghost Festival? Why only in S.E.A?
Christian asylum seekers got prioritized.

I will definitely pick it up if it’s a $50 bill. 😊
And also, don't sweep the floor, don't clear the trash, don't throw anything down the rubbish chute.
What I am worried about in this ghost festival is the ashes from the burning polluting the environment 😅
Worried what?! 7th month nothing compares to indo forest burning.🤷
@JNJN7686 don't think that's a good argument. If the act itself is wrong, it's wrong, regardless of small or big. 😅
Agreed..the pollution index spikes during this period...it's a health risk.
