My dad told me a story about the time he was riding his motorcycle and had to stop and let a mother skunk lead her babies across the road and he really stressed how cute and floofy they were just zipping in a line across the road, tails held high.
I used to do skunk rescue and I raised 8 baby skunks in my one bedroom apartment one year. All but one were returned to the wild. The last one just loved humans too much, and ended up as an education animal which visited schools to teach kids about wildlife. They are awesome animals.

I thought Ronald's comment was about raising them as pets, and if that's what he really means, then yes, their scent glands would be removed. If not, then rehabbers keep their distance when raising baby animals to later release in the wild so they don't imprint on humans

Last summer i rescued 6 little adorable baby skunks from my neighbor's window well, when nobody else would. It made me feel so good to take them to a sanctuary to get a new chance at life. They reported that they were all doing great! 🥰
Oh I call the guy marked with the blue right ear "Mister Sassypants." They are such amazing creatures, we're so privileged to be able to care for them. They were weaned and moved the pre-release enclosure this week so we're excited to be near the rehab finish line.
do the rescue skunks get their scent gland removes or they keep them? just wondering cuz it feels wrong to remove these glands but it would be weird working with them knowing they could spray xD@@HarmonyWildlife
@@kimreika5456 Nope! We actually released them on beautiful properties so they can live their best wild lives, and they needed to be able to spray. I am happy to report that none of the humans were sprayed, even after caring for them for months. We were very careful and intentional about keeping a calm, quiet atmosphere, minimizing contact, and never surprising them when we did have to handle them. They were perfect!

There are a couple of common stripe patterns and so it's just a genetic luck of the draw which one a skunk will get (in fact, skunks bred to be pets are often selectively bred to produce different stripe markings than their wild counterparts). There's no difference in coloration between males and females.
I had the great privilege of filming a bunch of these cute little guys behind my house last summer. They came out of the den to greet me. I never saw the momma. I went back to the house and got a can of sardines and my video camera. It was so much fun watching them scarfing down those sardines! I love how they do their little advance.. retreat.. advance...retreat maneuver. Its meant as a scare tactic...but just ends up being adorable!! 😊😄👍

Momma is in the den all day, and they have to wait for dark for her to take them out foraging. Just finding the odd insect around the den. They face a far greater danger from my neighbors with guns, and traps! Ever see James Blackwood the Racoon whisperers channel? 😳
Sometimes the internet is amazing. From Red Pandas bouncing, through Snow Leopard zoomies & bats eating bananas to baby skunks stomping. These are things I didn't realise I needed until I found them.
The Internet has brought some negatives, but it shines nowhere better than in educating people on animals and their welfare. I believe negative comment sections hurting video monetization have let RUclipsrs in other countries know that scaring a cat to death for a laugh won't land, and nothing will 'not interested' a video faster than an elephant with a chain on it's leg. It's fantastic. 🤗
Baby skunks are the absolute cutest. Little mischief makers! My then-boyfriend and I once spotted a mama and her babies feasting outside a fast food place. We carefully pulled into a parking spot and watched them for ages. They were the funniest little things, chasing around and being chaotic little fluffballs.
These little babies are adorable. I noticed they each have different patterns on their coats. If a skunk is not startled or threatened they won't spray. My husband caught one in a catchum alive trap on our back porch. We weren't sure how to release it without getting sprayed. I called a vet and he said get a long pole and run it throught the handle of the trap and GENTLY carry it to where we wanted to release it. We used the long pole to lift the latch on the trap, again GENTLY, and opened the trap. The little critter calmly walked out and looked at us as if to say "Thank you". He didn't seem to be the least bit upset being in the trap. It may have been that there was some cat food that he really seemed to be enjoying. If that had not worked I was going to go after the vet (a good friend) with a can of fart spray.😂😂😂 Be safe everyone and enjoy some of the beautiful wildlife.

When a mommy skunk got hit on the road we adopted the babies at my grandparents farm. Better than a guard dog. They weren't at all mean but for some reason salesmen would just turn around and leave 😂
I was outside one day on a break and heard a lot of noise in the bushes near by. Then I saw flashes of black and white. I kept watching, as a mother skunk walked out of the bushes with 6 babies behind her. They were adorable! Mum and babies had their tails held high as they walked. The last 3 got scared and rushed back to the bushes while mum and the first 3 walked a few hundred feet to another wooded area. Then mum came rushing back for the timid 3. It was sweet watching them! I spoke softly to them the entire time to let mum know I was there, and not a threat to her family. I was a lovely moment that I will probably never again experience.
Knew of a Trucker that had a pet Skunk. NOBODY messed with his stuff. It ran around inside of the Truck, and people would be greeted with the Tail. No clue if it was descented......
I have probably watched this 100 times and I still squeal because they are so freaking cute. We released them a few weeks ago, it was such a bittersweet moment because we enjoyed caring for them so very much.

I just got to observe them in their young, playful stage, and then they all left except for the momma. She had another litter this spring, but she moved out with this batch of babies. I liked having them around, without having it be a problem.

There are some states that allow people to keep pet skunks. That's not allowed in Tennessee, all these babies were released into the wild to live their best free lives.
I had 5 baby skunks under my shed. Their momma had died...& I'm talking baby babies. They must only been around 3 weeks old. So I took care of them until they got a bit older. They would come out & ride on my legs while I walked around, but only 2 would fit on each leg so the 5th baby would chase me crying. They never sprayed me but right b4 we released them they did get my dad. He kinda deserved it tho. Since I live off in the woods it wasn't hard to find a good spot for them when they got older

The smell of skunk, like on a country road, is one thing - I don't mind it actually - but point blank is another thing entirely. Two quick stories: when we lived in the city, unbeknownst to us, a skunk was wandering across our gated driveway early one morning. Our German Shepherds startled it when we let them out. Got the dogs of course, and the front of my truck (it looks like chewing tobacco spit). Drifted down the vents of mine and my neighbor's clothes dryers and were we in for a rude surprise next time we used our dryers! It took special descenting stuff that a coworker used for hunting to get the smell off the truck. Next time was after we moved to a place next to woods and fields. In 25 years there's been only one skunk incident but my dog, Phil, got it right in the face. It was later in the evening and nothing to do but run to the grocery for cans and cans of tomato juice until we could get to an open pet shop in the morning. He was a very long coat German Shepherd and he stunk, especially when it rained, for months after that. But the point blank smell is something one wouldn't even recognize, like burning wire insulation. It's truly dreadful. 😷
@@donnahilton471 Dish detergent baking soda and hydrogen peroxide worked when our cat got sprayed by a skunk. Soak your pet with this mixture, let soak in for 15 minutes and rinse. Your pet may not appreciate the bath, but the smell is gone.

I had a beautiful skunk that lived behind my house that was mostly white with a thin black stripe.
Not ignorant at all! We used the stripe patterns to help identify them, it was super handy.

I had 5 baby skunks under my shed. Their momma had died...& I'm talking baby babies. They must only been around 3 weeks old. So I took care of them until they got a bit older. They would come out & ride on my legs while I walked around, but only 2 would fit on each leg so the 5th baby would chase me crying. They never sprayed me but right b4 we released them they did get my dad. He kinda deserved it tho. Since I live off in the woods it wasn't hard to find a good spot for them when they got older

My family had a pet skunk. Her name was Gwendolyn and she was a lot of fun.
@Nancy N I have loved skunks for a lifetime, and even like the way they smell. Odd but true. I used to follow them around as a kid (grew up in the country)
@@lorisebae6014 They're really awesome animals. Gwendolyn wasn't wild. My brother's friend got her from a pet store. He was sent over seas so my brother brought her home to us. My mom wasn't too happy, but I was ecstatic. We got a lot of confused looks when we took her for walks around the neighborhood. Lol

The smell of skunk, like on a country road, is one thing - I don't mind it actually - but point blank is another thing entirely. Two quick stories: when we lived in the city, unbeknownst to us, a skunk was wandering across our gated driveway early one morning. Our German Shepherds startled it when we let them out. Got the dogs of course, and the front of my truck (it looks like chewing tobacco spit). Drifted down the vents of mine and my neighbor's clothes dryers and were we in for a rude surprise next time we used our dryers! It took special descenting stuff that a coworker used for hunting to get the smell off the truck.
Next time was after we moved to a place next to woods and fields. In 25 years there's been only one skunk incident but my dog, Phil, got it right in the face. It was later in the evening and nothing to do but run to the grocery for cans and cans of tomato juice until we could get to an open pet shop in the morning. He was a very long coat German Shepherd and he stunk, especially when it rained, for months after that.
But the point blank smell is something one wouldn't even recognize, like burning wire insulation. It's truly dreadful. 😷
Tomato juice doesn't work. Vinegar, baking soda and peroxide.

Dish detergent baking soda and hydrogen peroxide worked when our cat got sprayed by a skunk. Soak your pet with this mixture, let soak in for 15 minutes and rinse. Your pet may not appreciate the bath, but the smell is gone.
i love seeing skunk families in the wild (though these are cute too!), they all just trot in a cloud of fluff behind their mama 😭🩷🩷
