A Tour of MATALA, CRETE | Greek Island Beach Paradise!
Was there in 1974 when I was 21. One restaurant, one shop, a few houses, slept on the beach. Hippies living in caves. Spent week eating, drinking and swimming. Best week of my life. So different now.
Sounds nice.
Good old times...😃🍀
OMG how it’s so much developed since I was there in 1972. There was just one taverna then, slept in the caves at night hung out and hiked all around the area by day, good times!
I am half Greek and all of my family lives in Crete. Matala is definitely the favorite place on Crete for me. I go there every year , I really like it that you went to this beautiful place😊✌🏻
Great. :)
I've found my plance on this earth! This is it, what an amazing vibe! Feels like home!
Every time I visit Crete I visit Matala love the place.
Today is life, Tomorrow never comes 👌🇬🇷.
Was looking forward to this video top stuff Gabriel
A friend just told me about his visit here in 1968.. His accommodations were basic and very inexpensive, around $1 a night. One of his best memories.
I ended up in matala at the end of my 5 month solo backpack trip last year. Had no idea what I was getting myself into when I hitchhiked there. I ended up feeling drawn to it like a magnet and stayed in a cave on the other side of town... Jeez. Out of everywhere in the world this place sticks with me the most.....the energy is something else, that's for sure. I had the best and worst times of my life there but the best are what prevail :) I hope to return someday.....
Sounds like Nimbin in Australia... That leaves an impression... Even the dogs are stoned
Wowww...peace & love
I was in Matala in the early 90's. Seems to have built up quite a bit since then. Great memories
Hi Gabriel, Matala is definitely my favourite spot in Greece, from what I've seen in your vlogs..... I'm definitely an hippy at heart!
Peace ♡♡♡
Hi Gabriel. Nice to see you enjoyed Crete. One correction if you may. Hippies were not chased away by the locals, but by the greek junta. The locals (at least the majority) didn`t mind. Hope you come back soon cause you`ve missed so many cool places. eg near Matala, Kommos and Kokkini Ammos (red sand beach)...
Wasn't expecting to be seeing ancient Roman caves/tombs in this vid based on the Hippie Beach Paradise title, definitely a nice surprise.
Matala has a vibe in the atmosphere when you get there, I have been some times. And is a beautiful small village. Became more known into the world due to the hippie's trend that chose to visit at 70-80s.
I love the cozy feeling of this little harbour with all the hippy vibe and little restaurants. Definitely a place I would visit. That was a cool swim with the tunnel and steps. Neat that you met up with a subscriber. Maybe some day. Amazing caves.
I'm the Subscriber who met Gabriel :) I'm glad for your comment!
That was really awesome for one of your subscribers to chase you down and get to know you. Really cool. 🌸☀️
Supercool...Gabriel is known worldwide....😃
What a unique town for Greece! Thanks for the tour!
What a great place, I kept expecting Berger, Claude, Lafayette or Sheila from Hair to pop up spliff in hand🕉️🌺... Even Ganesh was there😊. The colours do actually look better, especially in the caves, your tweaking definitely worked wonders from my laptop👍. I could see you retire there in a few decades !
I'm doing my own version of a staycation watching Gabriel in Greece! I feel like I'm actually traveling in Greece because the GoPro is soooo cool. Safe travels, Gabriel!
This would totally be my island setting as I'm a hippie n all, I'm lovin' this! A must go see for sure n bringing my water shoes as I learned the first time I visited Greece its a must. thanks Gabe✌☮
Wawww amazing the color of the sea!
Glad you made it to Matala✌ I stayed there a few weeks ago and really enjoyed the chilled vibe, amazing clean sea, cool street art and music from the hippie era. Thanks for sharing.
Have visited Crete, but not Matala..looks amazing...and those roman tombs reminded me of Cappadoce indeed...
Nice subscriber you met there...with his family.
Best greetings from Paris, Gabriel 👋 and safe travels ! Peace & love ❤
You really know how to hike in those flip flops. That’s amazing!!
In the summer of 1973 I lived briefly in one of those caves. No fence then. The village has grown so much since then that it is unrecognizable to me. Red Beach nearby is very nice too.
That's awesome, must have been some good times.
In those caves Hippies stayed for days in Matala beach at the 70's. hundreds and hundreds of hippies, like burning man
That must have been quite a wild scene.
There's a video where an older Greek fisherman on his boat talks about hanging out with them back then. Starts about 34:35 ruclips.net/video/2I2EcQiv8_Q/видео.html
Sounds horrible
What a TOTALLY cool 😎 and peaceful place to visit! Your purpose in life is really cool! -j
I love those caves. Beautiful and interesting.
Wow! never heard of this place ☺
Nice touch with Joni Mitchel lyrics! Interesting place.
Great Video Gabriel. It seems like Cats come to you often. Great travels
20:17 the best part of the video had to have been the kitten 🐱
Beautiful Gabriel!! Thank you! Love those caves! Water is so clear, love seeing the fish 😊❤
Wow Crete is so beautiful and clean. It was a great video I really enjoyed every minute of it. Anyways to be honest with you all your videos are sensational. Thanks for sharing Gabe, Greetings from New York City. God bless you on your travels.🙏❤️👍😘💛💜💙🧡💚
I went to Matala when i was 11 yrs old in 1969 with my parents. All caves were packed with hippies from all over the world!! They used to come down to the tavernas people were feeding them every day. My father bought 3 huge watermelons and treated them! I was amazed looking at them, growing up in a strict school in Athens with conservative parents,i really felt their freedom! There was a local guy named George who wrote on a wall 'today is the life tomorrow may never come' something like that! You broughr back so many memories Gabriel thank you!!
Very cool. ✌
I really am enjoying the music in this one Gabe.
Sweet, glad to hear it. Some pretty cool music coming up in the next one too.
Great video Gabe. The Go Pro makes such a difference. Matala is very different to anything I’ve seen in Greece before, interesting place.
The fish (Maritha) you were eating was whitebait. Much bigger whitebait in Greece than what we get here in Australia. They were huge. I will be sad when you leave Greece. I was vicariously living out my staycation through you. It’s been 12 years since I was last there. Missing it terribly, but have been reliving it through your videos.
Another great video Gabe! You are definitely one of my favorite vloggers.
Nice to see Matala again. It used to be one of my hangouts but I haven't been to Crete for several years now, I prefer places like Anafi and Donousa. It's now more hippy-fied as it didn't have all the artwork on the streets etc, otherwise it looks very much the same. Is the slogan 'Today if life tomorrow never comes. Welcome to Matala, George' still painted in large letters on the concrete wall at the end of the beach? [Edit: The slogan IS still there as there's a very quick shot of it at a narrow angle in your video]. You used to be able to just wander round the caves without paying, they weren't fenced off. The quality of the videos is very good.
Amazing places, thanks and glad that I can see the world through your camera.
The quality is super crisp, especially under water!
Congrats for your new camera.
Love the ambient sounds you’ve added to Matala. 😎
Gabe, thanks for adding some map action in the vid.
*What a beautiful beach!*
Thanks so much for going into the caves and showing us details!
Well done Gab ,great video, clarity and sound perfect, keep up the good work, always happy to see what your doing and where you are ,cheers
Whenever I saw your travel vlog,I become happy because I am thinking about travelling.#Gabriel Traveler.
wonderful video ! it is the Libian Sea down there, Africa is not far !
Interesting place Matala, thanx for this video Gabe.
awesome cant wait to go!
I never made it to Matala, but it looks really nice. I guess the thing I remember most about Crete was walking around in shorts at sea level and seeing a tall, snowcapped Mt. Ida. It was winter. You just don't get that contrast where I'm from.
sexy travel guy is awesome. Nice swimming footage. There's this movie called "Summer Lovers" with Darryl Hannah and those caves are in the movie.
Love that place. We'll be vlogging there in a few weeks :) and a lot of other places on Crete.
Amaizing video like always Gabriel. I love the place :)
fantastic place
Crazy blue waters in Crete.
OMG we are out of weed haha, I always wonder how many vloggers smoke and have to hide it from us. Killer vid once again bro!
Why hide it from us ?
Great adventure for an Arizona Sunday morning...
Joni Mitchell lived in Matala caves in a hippie community around 1968-69.
"...and they're playing that scratchy rock 'n' roll beneath the Matala moon.."
Cool fact 😎
@@youtooaromatherapy1897 thank you, until just now , was never quite sure of that lyric, thought it was something like " beneath the mantle of the moon", now I know ;). Also, always just assumed ( because of the cane, I guess) that "Carey" must have been some older, wealthy fellow, who " kept her in that tourist town:. So was quite surprised to learn the other day that the song was written for Carey's 24th Birthday !
used to go here as a kid , i wanna live there and hang around wi all the hippies they were reyt co ol, one of best places ever this
Great video, amazing caves and soooo cute 🐾 meow!
love the art work on the floor
Great video!!
Hey Gabe, another awesome video. You gotta be careful with hiking in those footwear man. ☮️ Happy travels and good luck

Hi Gabriel . Love your videos 👍
Have a question : how was water temperature ? Is it cold , warm ?
Water was just about right, not too cold.

@@GEORGE21GREECE

Good video, yes very clear audio and picture!
Super super good welcome
Great video
Cool stuff i was doing vaca videos back in 80s before digital and mixing music...just not motivated to do it now everyone is...your doin a great job *
Awesome, appreciate it.
This place was one of the locations por the film "Summers Lovers" filmed in 1984, but most of the film was made in Oia Santorini!
very beautiful 😍👍
🔥🔥🔥
Yosemite - You've got some major plate tectonics going on there, great video.
Thanks. Yosemite?
@@GabrielTravelerVideos
I visited Yosemite during the spring of 2009. The place is jammed pack with interesting stuff. Living so close I'm sure you've visited. Half Dome, The Upper Falls Trail, The Panorama Trail, El Capitan, the scenery in the valley, etc. Your international following would devour your insights of Yosemite as they do everything else. Bgood.
Yeah Yosemite is incredible, been there many times and even have an old video from there: ruclips.net/video/_yOMnhPUlKw/видео.html I was just wondering about your mentioning it in reference to this video. Just a general recommendation I guess?
@@GabrielTravelerVideos
The Upper Falls Trail, High Sierras very fantastic, makes ya think of Humphrey Bogart. Water has been flowing over the Upper Falls for 100 million years, kinda puts things in perspective . You could do a real doozy with current technology. "Hey maybe next time theres alot to see." BGood
Yeah for sure, I'd love to go back and explore again, one of the most beautiful places in the world.
FINALLY you've made it to Matala, this is your spot Gabriel. I honestly can't think of a place where you belong more than in Matala :D Love the video, and loved the beach when we went as well, I agree with the title, it definitely is one of the most unique hippie beaches out there. The beach itself is super pebbly and so-so, but those caves are wicked cool. The town itself is just so charming and vibrant. Btw what was the restaurant you ate at?
I agree, a nice spot for sure. The restaurant I ate at with George and his parents was Sirtaki.
Cute car☺
Equivalent place in Australia would be Byron bay though smaller with more cars. The number of English signs tells the story as to where the tourists come from....
Super-:)
A WALT DISNEY HIPPIE NIGHTMARE!!!
Everything is good with the GOPRO 7. Definitely a hippie looking place.
I want swim there
wow! nice place cute kitty cat at the end. where you going next Gabe
Good question. Still haven't decided yet. Trying to make up my mind.
Stay for a while in Crete. There’s still enough for you to see and discover
And combine it with a few days totally Zen... the island of Gavdos!
Matala very very near my village
Go to Indonesia again...this time from Jakarta to Ijen
Have you been practicing a few poses to do in front of the camera, gabe?
amazing trip! in google maps there is a sunken grid system here in the sea...but no info on the web...that right angled cave looks unnatural shape.. man made?
Have you visited malia
have family there ive never met. not sure what part of Crete. neat place
cool music, no pricing information so far. that would have been nice, maybe at the end?
I know Gavdos is called Europe's most southern point - but Cyprus is technically a bit more southern - Isn't Cyprus Europe?
It's definitely debatable, but Wikipedia says Gavdos: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_points_of_Europe Cyprus is closer to the middle east, the Canary islands are closer to Africa.
Yeah, I think it's a question of being part of the European continental plate - geology - to bad you didn't make it to Gavdos this time - never let women change your plans, Gabe - stand tall...:-)
I know man, kinda bummed but at the same time I had a really awesome trip anyway...and Gavdos will be there waiting for me.
We can only hope, Gabe - might get towed away by pirates - I know.....sounds far-fetched...:-)
I was hoping you’d point out which cave Joni Mitchell lived in.
at 11:08 to 11:44. my first thought: what the heck are you blurring/censoring??? then I realized it was a drop of sea water... 😂
