Here's the problem with everytime someone says something "sounds like a C800G": The "sound" of it is not what makes the C800G worth much more than it costs. It's non-sibilance, resistance to distortion when you change volume/SPL during a performance, etc. Is what makes it such a magical tool. If it was just the "sound", modelers wouldn't be so far off. If there was another way, I wouldn't have spent a fortune on my C800G.
You are absolutely correct about this mic. I've spent thousands on mics in the past year and returned or sold most. This mic however, has a very balanced sound as you said. I was prepared to spent 2 to 3 or $4,000 on a C-800 clone but I feel this mic is close enough. Great construction and looks really impressive as well. It's a great mic no matter who made it or what it costs.
You did yourself a favor not buying the GAP clone. NOTHING is like a C800-G. In fact, even a C800G doesn't perform like a C800G unless it has the right tubes. It's much more than the tone of the mic that makes it what it is. When used properly, I've never used another mic that's more resistant to distortion, smooths sibilance over, responds as quick/clear/smoothly... A tone can be faked with any number of mics and a little EQ but in all things that mic a great mic great, there is NOTHING on the planet like this mic. If you don't have $30,000 to buy a used one (since it's too ever late to order one) for $25k plus the other $5k for tax, shipping, finding replacement tubes, buying the 3 you need for $500+ each, insurance for shipping, and paying a professional to install the new tubes (because who in their right minds risks ruining such an expensive item)... then you're not gonna get anything like it. With that said, I wouldn't advise anyone who's not a trained professional to use it anyway. The mic needs to be setup a very specific way in order for the extremely rare tube in the mic to last and, for the price, you're really gonna want to have the skill to make it worth it.
I used a Sony C800g when I went to a major studio to record a song. I have a sm7b and at4050 and even though they both sound amazing, nothing has sounded like that C800g. Might try this mic
@@drillgirl718 A lot of similarities in the dry vocal, much closer than my other mics that cost more. I can still tell which is the sony in the dry though. Once i mixed the vocals, i can't tell the difference, and that's what i was looking for. It's a super easy mic to mix. I'm very impressed for a mic thats 1% the price of the Sony C800g.
I do not like the MXL microphones...the first one I got was really bad. I wonder if I should give this a shot again. I really wanted to get a SHURE next. still not decided and doing more research
There is no way this mic is in the ballpark of the Sony... The MXL sounds like its in the ballpark of maybe a shure sm7b... The clone which is the Golden Age GA-8000. I have one. Sounds very solid. I still more times than not use the Neumann TLM49. It will run you around $1600 area but honestly if you want to record yourself and make a good sound. Save up and spend the money. Mics arent priced accordingly for no reason.... Go rent a Sony C-800G and if you record this same video and you honestly feel like the MXL is "In the same ballpark" I'll delete this post and never record music ever again hahaha. For the record. the Sony C-800G is amazing but you can find a great mic like that for under $5k for sure.
Sony only works with certain voices as well. Actually all mics. I can make a manley sound like a sony c800. Once you mix the vocals you cant tell them apart.
That's too high of a price for a clone. Check out the video that compares this mic to the Sony head to head. There is a difference but not as much as one would think

The CR89
check out "audio test kitchen" website for smart comparison listening and frequency response curves. more scientific than online shootouts.
I think it's more of your proximity than the actual quality of the microphone
Got cr89 for $70 on ebay. Yay!
Next, I need a good cardio dynamic mic for an untreated room.
This does not sound like a Sony. Or even in the ball park 😂
Like you would know..lol
