i hope so much earthworks gets more attention ... They do such an amazing job! Also The Blue Hummingbird is extremely underrated ...
Hi Warren, from your demo and practical experiment, can we say that the Earthworks SR314 is a great vocal mic for home studio suffering from bad soundproofing / weak acoustic treatment? The off axis rejection that you demoed is unbelievable! This means it won’t record background noise or room sound. What do you think?
My ADK Z67 is a desert island mic! The mics I use all the time, akg414, Royer R122, Shure SM7, ADK Z67. I also have lots of others including a nice matched set of Lawson 47s.
I have the LA120. Great mics really! Ideal for acoustic guitar and important: classical guitars ...and their brightness is not sibilant at all. Fantastic SDC mics! I did suggested them to a friend in Rome, he is making classical music production with quartets etc. He got a couple. After 2-3 months he was so happy: he got another one. He sold the sE he had before. Lauten is really a great brand! I tested also the Soyuz. David Brown was at my place in January 2018 to make me test the mics. GREAT! AEA: I have 2 R9 and a TRP: just fantastic. I had also a RC44 for 10 days to try it in several conditions: FANTASTIC! I know (even if I couldn't try it till now) that also the KU5A is great!
I think the best compliment I can give a mic is that the raw sound makes me feel like I don't need to (or want to do) do anything to the sound. The AEA KU5A fits the bill. The others are nice, that one is just soooooo smooth!
Have a Royer R-10 on the way from Sweetwater right now.....cant wait try it out ......also just bought a Warm Audio WA 47,,,talk about stellar.....cant wait to try the 47 and the R10 on acoustic guitar and see what I get :)
Great song @ 8:33 Warren, love it!! I can't believe I've never heard it before. I had a blast playing around with mixing it. I tried putting reverb on my pre-master but I think I prefer it with just a bit on the acoustic guitars and the shaker. I feel an acoustic song like that needs to be more bare bones.
@@leejackson2505 Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum. Warren also did another version on here with Katie Ferrara on vocals. Definitely worth a check! Great song.
I'm really excited about the Lauten Audio. I was talking with my Sweetwater Rep and was looking at more expensive microphones, but with us having similar voices, he mentioned how he actually prefers and gets the best results with the LA-320. I've been really thrilled with it and blown away by the results (and for the price). Now that I'm looking to get a new pair of small diaphragm mic for acoustic guitar and things like that, I will have to give a deep look at the LA-120. Another informative video Warren. Thank you! My Flea 47 (U47 styled-mic) gets a lot of work with my home recording, especially on vocals. When recording other instruments, I'm finding that it makes less and less difference about 'which' mic I choose, as long as I'm careful to listen to the results before hitting the record button.

Did you try to play fingerstyle on acoustic guitar with 013? DO you think its necessary to get 2 at the same time? Or just for private usage 1 will be fine, and if needed just buy the second later?
I was never that big of a fan of the R121...just too muddy and when mixed with the 57, only worked when maybe a quarter of the volume was the 121 for me (I do a lot with baritone tunings so your mileage may vary with a clean Tele or something). I heard that Neal Schon also preferred the R10 to the 121 and bought a bunch of them. My favorite ribbons for guitar is the Shure KSM313, Beyer m160 and AEA R92.

I tend to like character mic's to a large degree. I found a cheap 'n cheerful chinese jobby for masking a clients badly maintained acoustic guitar ( if they can't maintain their own, they sure aint using mine hehe ) whilst doing guide tracks . It's called a TNC ACM 3. A terrible R121 copy , but it just hides buzzes and assorted guitar crap as you record. Beyer MC930, AEA N22, Coles 4038 , Mictek C7. I also like the Royer R10 for male voiceover work. I'll sometimes use Rode K2 tube condenser . I'm not a huge fan of neumman , but i'd kill for a 67. 11:40 Hey, it's "Live Me, I'm Rich" again. I really like this one. This price range is way above my budget, but it's good to know what to aim for. Thank You.
You know, surprisingly enough, I'd really be interested to hear what the KU5A sounds like with a u87 or a tlm 103 blended in just softly. It's an outstanding mic, but I just feel like it's missing that crispiness on top. For this purpose specifically, I feel like Neumann would work better in the application than the punchiness of a 57 or 58...Just my opinion. The MA 201 was absolutely beautiful btw.
@@chipgaasche4933 Warren sometimes displays a certain guttural scratchiness in his speaking voice that I expected to be reflected in his singing voice. This was the first time I heard him sing. I was pleasantly surprised by his tone.
I think the sE8 and it's stripped down brother, the sE7 deserve a mention. They offer a LOT of bang for the buck. Plus their ultra-flat response makes them well suited for modeling software.
The real question is do I buy a pair of r-10's or a pair of the mojaves? Im mostly looking for drum overheads/ocasional rooms and some mics that I can keep with me for at least 10 years haha

From Rode

Vintage U87, although the new U67, which I recently rented, is spectacular. To me the new 67 is as good as the original.
Weissklang v17. Got the mic 2 months ago after I sold my TLM103 (which I thought was to bright and kind of sibilant) and I love it.

Yes! Steve is amazing!
@@Producelikeapro the song is amazing as well! what is called?
11:40 Hey, it's "Live Me, I'm Rich" again. I really like this one. This price range is way above my budget, but it's good to know what to aim for. Thank You.
You know, surprisingly enough, I'd really be interested to hear what the KU5A sounds like with a u87 or a tlm 103 blended in just softly. It's an outstanding mic, but I just feel like it's missing that crispiness on top. For this purpose specifically, I feel like Neumann would work better in the application than the punchiness of a 57 or 58...Just my opinion.
The MA 201 was absolutely beautiful btw.
heyho Warren, nice and inspiring collection.
my favorit mic (what i'm own) is the Gefell UM70.
greetings from Berlin.
Warren, Your clear vocal tone freaked me out. I was expecting gravel but got silk. Nice delivery also. Marvelous!
Why did you expect gravel, fred?
@@chipgaasche4933 Warren sometimes displays a certain guttural scratchiness in his speaking voice that I expected to be reflected in his singing voice. This was the first time I heard him sing. I was pleasantly surprised by his tone.
I think the sE8 and it's stripped down brother, the sE7 deserve a mention. They offer a LOT of bang for the buck. Plus their ultra-flat response makes them well suited for modeling software.
You mean Studio Electronics? I've been considering them but read a lot about high self noise?
The real question is do I buy a pair of r-10's or a pair of the mojaves? Im mostly looking for drum overheads/ocasional rooms and some mics that I can keep with me for at least 10 years haha
